Is Crash Team Racing the best Mario Kart like ?

I would be interested in knowing who of the people that mention Crash Team Racing have even played the game recently, and in all honesty, how can you say that this is a better Kart racer than, say, Sonic Transformed?

It's almost as if, there are people with different opinions than you.

OT: CTR is pretty dope, the mechanics are

CTR is my favourite kart racing game. It's probably the game I have put in the most amount of hours ever. Playing 4 player battles with friends is the best form of video gaming I've experienced.

The tight controls make the game a dream to play. Plus, the items and the ways you can dodge them only increase the depth. The game has a high skill ceiling, and this increases the immersion when you are playing with 3 other good players.

As an example, in 4 player battle mode, you observe a character on another end of the map is heading towards an item box. You have ricochet bombs as items, but rather than driving straight to that person to hit them, you drive the opposite direction (so as to not alert that player) and fire the ricochet bomb backwards towards the item box, and then explode the bomb exactly as it makes contact. You can't really see when this bomb will make contact, so you have to figure out the bomb's travelling speed, and the direction it might take when firing backwards. You can look at the other player's screen to see how far the bomb is, but most players develop skills so they don't need to rely on visuals. The feeling of nailing that guy and him having no clue who hit him, while you're on the other side of map laughing and feeling smug is one of the most satisfying feelings in gaming.
Also remember that you still have 2 other players to worry about while you're doing this. So, it really does take a lot of concentration and focus to be really good at battle mode. Not to mention friends are screaming at you when they finally figure out who hit them haha.

But this was just one example with one item. You have missiles that can be dodged. Items can be powered or unpowered by collecting Wumpa fruits. You have this cat and mouse game when someone has missiles while you are taking cover and trying to get to the nearest item box to get some protection. You also get these duels when two players with good items clash together, and one walks out unharmed, or both go down. Managing 4 players on the map, with all the items and trying to be the first to score 15 points or highest score in a time limit is quite an exhilarating experience.

CTR is better than any Mario Kart game in my opinion.

Fun Fact: Those "innovating" gravity tracks that Mario Kart 8 advertised to death? Yeah they ripped that off Crash Nitro Kart down the the animation when the wheels flip on the side.

You say that like it means something when the game would likely not exist were it not for super mario kart on the snes and the fact that f zero x did gravity racing the better part of a year before ctr was released

SEGA All Stars Racing is probably my favourite Mario Kart clone, and sometimes beats out the real thing, but I also have a fondness for Pac-Man World Rally and LEGO Racers.

I feel like the physics mechanics and handling of CTR, meshed with the vehicle customizations of SASRT (well, adapting vehicles should I say), and mode versatility of DKR, with the unique flavour of items (not necessarily the item balance) from the MK series, and you'd be getting close to a truly godlike game.

I poured tons of hours into CTR as a kid. I beat that game so many times. It's so fun. So I would say yes, it's the best MK like/clone. I played it recently and I suck at it. I need to get back into the groove.

Without retro glasses on this game (BLUR) on pc is THE best cart racer.
I've already tried out almost all cart racer with 4p splitscreen (even recent ones like MK8) and Blur takes the cake.

How many of those saying it's the best kart game to this day have played the PSN version on a PS3? Shitty graphics, resolution and -most important- framerate make the thing downright unplayable. I wanted to throw up when I tried 4 players splitscreen. I hope you're not serious unless you're playing it on a PC emulator at a good resolution and 60fps.

Basically it was just like Mario Kart was at the time!

Anyway Diddy Kong Racing > both. People saying Sonic have to be trolling lol

Framerate? Don't even remember it being unplayable like you are saying. It controls like a dream. Resolution and graphics? You do know this is a PS1 era game right? Try to play on a CRT TV to make it playable and not on an HD screen on the PSN version.

Maybe some people can play a racing game at 25-30fps but I have a hard time, especially if it has PS1 era graphics and 480p.

PD: I'm talking about the people who are saying it's the best kart game today, which I think is nonsense. I could bear with these technical hassles when I played it 10 years ago.

Yep. The nostalgia glasses in this thread are on full force. Drifting was trash. Characters were lame.

The game was good. Sonic Transformed destroys it. Mario Kart 8 is much, much better. Even Diddy Kong Racing was better.

No seriously. It really is.
Thank you. I was worried no one was going to hit this thread with 'the' truth bomb.

I love all those other games too - but the thread asks a question - is CTR the best Mario Kart game? No, it is not - it's fucking beautiful Blur. The ecstasy of Blur. Oh my, the best online multiplayer experience last gen - yes really.

CTR is the best kart racer too date period. Both racing mode and battle were fun as hell and very very addicting. Mario Kart series is great too but CTR just have that magical "thing" that is hard to describe. It just feels right the moment you start playing and is very hard too put down. Also weapons and items feel more skill based than Mario Kart ones. And ability to turn them on/off whenever you like. Just awesome awesome game.
Wouldn't mind if naughty dog made couple DLCs with new maps for it :)

Its one of those games that never gets old. When friends come by and there is an urge to play something. CTR is safe bet for great fun along with Smash Melee, Monkey Ball 2, Crash Bash etc. Yes we still play this game regularly.

Konami Krazy Racers (Wai Wai Racing) GBA is the best old style sprite and scale map Mario Kart a like.

Crash team racing always had a funky feel to the slides and all I couldn't get used to.

Also there's never any love for the spiritual successor, Jak X racing.

I always preferred Diddy Kong Racing, personally.

Agree. Sonic did a lot of the same stuff though. But DKR was first, and was more charming in my opinion. (Not a big Sonic guy)

Plus, I kinda feel that Sonic is more an arcade racer with guns than a kart game. Don't know why, probably something to do with the handling.

best one

granted I didn't play mario kart or crash one or well basically any other kart racer ^^

edit: looking up wiki, apparently not all that well reviewed, had no idea

But that's what made Sonic so good. It is an arcade racer with items. That's exactly why it's so much better than any other kart racer.

Also if you're even remotely a Sega fan, Transformed was as charming as it gets. It was pure fanservice.

The thing about Sonic Transformed is that you could take the items out of the game and it would still be an absolutely fantastic arcade racer. I couldn't say the same about other kart racers.

Another CTR loves over here. This game took my and my friends by surprise , we loved to hook up the multitap and go at it the whole freaking night. This and Quake 2 on PSX as well. Fun times. What ever happend to those days? :(

Sega Rally for the Saturn and Daytona USA on the arcades made all racing games on competing platforms play like crap--and that's including CTR. I'm thinking that since most PSX games had horrible framerates, CTR stood out as the "best" for those who only had the PS1 as their console.

Ignorance is bliss.

Kart racers without items are abominable.

I agree that CTR is one of the best Kart racers out there. The tracks are better than anything at the time and even today it plays really, really well.

Sonic Transformed is very good too. Probably just a bit behind CTR.

Then Mario Kart DS, for me. Haven't played 8 yet.

Crash bash >>> mario party, now that you mention it. I miss crash and his gang too much :(

Sonic Racing Transformed is easily my number #1. All it needs is a coat of Nintendo-level polish to be the undisputed champ, it's too glitchy for my liking.

CTR takes an honorable second. Both far ahead of Mario Kart.
