Is Crash Team Racing the best Mario Kart like ?

I still occasionally play CTR with childhood friends. Yes, when the dated graphics are too much to handle on the PS3 (play as PS1 classic) we jump onto Wii U for some MK8.

But goddamn does CTR have superior gameplay and tight ass mechanics!

This is my favorite non Mario Kart "silly" racing game.

I still find it so amazing that this was essentially secretly a Gran Turismo prototype.

Aside from the obvious, DKR with CTR coming closely behind...

Why has South Park Rally not been mentioned? This game was awesome, think the Dreamcast one was the definitive version. I loved how many secrets were tucked away in this game.

that game was awful..

this is wrong. the drifting in CTR is designed for babies, there is literally no skill involved, just drift with one button then spam another one for free turbos

Exactly.

IMO, I feel Mario Kart is better but I also feel Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transforms is way better than Mario Kart.

The only exception is the nostalgia with older Mario Kart like Super Mario Kart or Double Dash.

As it should be.

It's simple, but to get the max boost, you need to watch the bar. Some shortcuts NEEDS you to have the max drift speed.

CTR is good but I'd tip my hat to Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart:DS or Mario Kart:DD as king. SASTR was a mistake, it's nothing but trash. In reality SASTR was just boring to me and only kind of fun in multiplayer. I got like 80% through the game before putting it down as I was kinda waiting for it to get good and I never felt it did. It wasn't a critical darling at all, just has some very vocal fans.

Nah son, you don't get to say some dumb disingenuous shit like this after this was posted

Maybe you need to have played the game to understand, but this video doesn't otherwise do much to illustrate any depth in the drifting system. For all I know, the drifting in this game could be extremely simple (like say Outrun 2 in the Testarossa) making picking a line through a corner trivial. If you look at any decent time trial run in any racer, the lines taken will look good, else it would be a bad time.

I bought the game about 1 week ago, I used to play only the demo when I was a kid with my cousin, ohh and we played it for HOURS we loved it, such a great game, but always the same map.

I have the say the game aged well, it's still a excellent game, the graphics for ps1 where pretty great to be honest.

Oh well I love it, as for mario kart I only played the snes version and it was great also, not so good as CTR but still great, don't know if the new ones are better, just came to share my love to CTR :)

Blur is the best game in the genre, CTR is a close second. And yes, that's including Mario Kart. It might've been the one that popularised it but it's far from the best.

That's not really impressive man
Yeah that video looks really unimpressive tbh.
I get the feeling that Crash Team Racing is one of those games where people are in awe just for nostalgia's sake. I've played a bit of it and it feels nowhere near as amazing as Sonic Transformed. The trick and drifting system in Sonic is undoubtedly the best implementation I've ever seen in a kart racing game. It encourages being risky and is fairly difficult to pull off, but damn is it rewarding.
Also the SEGA fanservice everywhere.

It is exactly that. CTR felt amazing to all the PlayStation kids who refused to dirty their hands with Nintendo, but in no way does it hold a candle to most of the MK franchise. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

SRT is a lot closer to the prize, though.

Horrible game.

I know. I loved CRT when I had a PSOne and thought it was better than MK 64, but still DKR was better than both.

To insinuate that CTR is a better Kart racer than Sonic Transformed and specially MK8 is lol.

Mario Kart is king but Crash Team Racing isn't far behind and Diddy Kong Racing is a lot of fun as well. Shame that Donkey Kong Racing never saw the light of day on GameCube because of Microsoft's Rare acquisition, was really looking forward to it.

Also Jak X Combat Racing is really bad in my opinion along with any subsequent CTR entry.

I liked crash, but I prefer Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed more.

also, something i like, that I don't know if other people like, is Chocobo Racing. I like the strategy of the pick ups, either powering up current elements, using it, holding it (and can be stolen), etc. While the racing mechanic itself could be a lot better, I still enjoyed it.

Crash Team Racing was everything when I was growing up. Me and my best friend at the time would go at it! Such a fun game.
