I've thought over the last day or two on who he was and in the end I can only come to one conclusion.

Iwata was the best of us.

The very thought of Miyamoto having something other than a smile on his face breaks my heart, it gets even worse given the circumstances... The man's friend is gone and he must be devastated today.

I take a lot of comfort in knowing that Iwata got to see Splatoon become a success and know that the future of the company will be in safe hands. That would have been a big deal to him, undoubtedly.

The whole thing is still so surreal. He was larger than life in many ways. While he was human, he was also as much a part of the Nintendo roster as their own (immortal) creations. Perhaps that's why this whole thing feels so strange.

It's partially why I think E3 was what it was. They had puppets because it'd be less time for him to do a quick voice over and focus on other things. They also had a focus on the games he had announced that would be coming out soon than a focus on a distant future where he knew he couldn't be a part of. I think it's only sudden to us because he didn't want people to worry about him, and let him get the things he needed to get done.

Now everything makes sense at E3... Maybe they were actually planning an Iwata's appearance at the Digital Event but he was just simply too low on energy to do those type of things so they decided to use puppets instead. The official reason was that he couldn't attend this year's E3 due to work but, well, even if that is true in some way, I'm sure it was also related to his health but they didn't said anything about it. Sighhh :(

Probably even why the focus of this E3 was "happiness", something they even mentioned after when asked about it and they talking about people been more happy and smiling at Nintendo's booth.

In a way, I guess he and everyone close to him knew, but in similar cases everyone's advised to make that person feel and behave like normal..and loved. If they all went around talking sbout his condition, appointing a new CEO, etc; it would've been a constant reminder of his condition and everyone would be talking about it on interviews, etc.

Thank you so much for sharing such a nice an inspiring story. Your mom was a true hero. I truly admire and respect people like that <3 It's nice to read that she spend his last moments on the best way possible: Just being happy. That's the key to going through rough times. Just keep going forward and don't even think about giving up! Same with Iwata, he just simply keep it going forward, working a lot literally until the very last minute of his life and that is something we should appreciate a lot as well. <3

It also explains why they focused on games coming out 2015/early 2016.

It's really sort of interesting how Miyamoto and Iwata became so close because they started out as rivals. Iwata wanted to make better games then him saying "I sort of arbitrarily decided that Miyamoto was my rival. . . I wanted to do something to just give him hell."

Through Miyamoto he learned ""Content really is king" saying "his games outsold mine by a huge margin. I found out then that engineering is not quite as important as imagination. To be honest, I was ashamed."

It feels we all lost a best friend in Iwata. The guy on the playground that would say hey have you checked out this Nintendo game. For Miyamoto, Iwata was much bigger than a friend. He was family. I can imagine the amount of sadness he feels now.

Much needed, both of these.

I think that leaving condolences and feeling broken is still completely normal, but I'm glad that there are people trying to make smiles at the same time. I can't say it's, "What he would want," but I certainly think Iwata would enjoy them both.

Whhhhhaaaaa? You ever watch anything Bill is actually in? The man is a class act, and he has been for more than a decade. He's also quite silly as has been demonstrated in many directs and when he's been on the E3 floor (not to mention all of those cool e3 treehouse events).

Bill started as a simple translator basically doing all the work for localization for NOA. It was a very small staff when he started. Whereas Reggie is a hired COO, in his past was working for Pizza Hut and I think a paper towel company.

I hope Nintendo releases Kirby 64, and Kirby Super Star Ultra on the Virtual Console one day. That's all I need left to basically own all of them again, but on the Wii U, and I do plan on going through at least most of them 100%

What has given you that impression? Personally I've always seen Bill as one of the most earnest people at NoA, and second to only Miyamoto and Iwata in how much he actually seems to love the work Nintendo does and embraces the quirkiness of it.

Bill Trinen is awesome. He's a bit dry and straight-to-the-point, but he's still cool. He's also the butt of many jokes, and he takes them in good stride.

Thank you very much for your post. Sorry for your mother. It's sad to know someone is going but rewarding to be able to fill that remaining time with happiness.

I agree that something like this looks to have happened with Nintendo as well for the last year. It wasn't even the case that only his closest circle knew about his illness. At the time Iwata had his surgery Nintendo's press release did state it was for bile duct growth removal. It was only with his death that the gravity of this statement became clear to many, with cancer doctors mentioning that the survival rate even in the best case scenario for the next 5 years is less than 30/20% (depending on source). So everyone who already knew that stuff could put one and one together even back then.

So Iwata was on borrowed time since then, I'm sure he prepared more stuff he wanted to realize. I'm not expecting Nintendo to do public special services for Iwata (they didn't for Yamauchi, and Iwata's selfless spirit doesn't mesh with that either). Instead I think people inside Nintendo know of things Iwata was working on and finishing those first, as a way to pay respect. I hope to be able to still see more of it even with the man gone.

Guys, it's not the place or time to discuss Bill's suit wearing abilities.

I just hope that his family, friends and colleagues can find comfort seeing the reactions, tributes and stories upon his passing away.

Iwata truly was a revered figure.

I'm posting in this thread to state my disgust toward's EvilLore's response towards the banner change fracas, hiding behind an air of authority and righteousness in order to protect and satisfy his own ego, and using the guise of "protecting" Iwata's memory when his actions have done nothing but disrespect the very same.

I recognize that this is likely to get me - a junior member especially - permanently banned for not falling in lockstep with the manufactured narrative and cult of personality regarding NeoGAF's higher-ups, but feel it's more important to state that celebrating Satoru Iwata's memory is far more important to a video game forum (not to mention just more topical time-wise) than the national legalization of gay marriage in a country that only finally got around to it long after many others and certainly long after it stopped being a special occurrence rather than the expected norm in this age of tolerance.

Thus, I accept the cost of my access to NeoGAF and its potential "exclusive circle of connections" - one that it has lorded over the rest of the gaming community and even its very members in a rather Scientology-esque way for years - in order to state my opposition on EvilLore's home turf to him being... to "set aside diplomacy and engage in real-talk": a narcissistic douchebag with his head up his own ass.

This post will also be archived and the archive's link posted publicly in other communities, as I am aware that the administration has not only been banning members that have been bringing up that post of his in that thread, but deleting the posts outright to maintain their "final word."

And on what should be an unrelated note, rather than dragging it down by association with a certain forum admin's masturbatory power-trip:

This is an example of someone who believes themselves to be a martyr over demands that the NeoGAF logo be changed not being complied with. You don't honor Iwata's memory by having a psychotic meltdown.
