Fighting Games Weekly | July 20-26 | No Gods or Kings, Only Tears

And now for the question folks ask themselves once a year...
Coqlmnn.jpg

For me, I'm gonna try to play more anime in general and Skullgirls. They had the hypest top 8.

EDIT: Also I really wish the title was Fighting Games Weekly|Frauds Among U.S.
lol
Third Strike... Also maybe Vampire Savior and CvS2. Maybe go to GGA once I learn enough and play Mightymar and pockets.

That new Rising Thunder game has no SRK/QCF motion for special moves...

MEGATON!

I made a post a while back about a fighter that can use something like this although I use one special button instead of having 3 (and you would do specials by doing one direction + special). Cool to see someone actually use it.

Like Smash?

So did Mr. Wizard even try to justify the ArcSys hate, or did he just realize there's no point since it's so obvious at this point.

I think the justification is GG is primarily a Japanese game so he wants it on prime Japanese time.

Yatagarasu at Evo was hype. Lots of people who hadn't heard of it gave it a go, and we had a 96-man single Elim tournament on saturday.

(Then I played the winner in a FT3 and bodied him)

Yata isn't done, looks like we might be able to bring a copy or two to other US tournaments down the road.

Also, had a chance to speak with the game designer Umezono. They want to fix some UI/connection issues but it's a matter of -when they can get around to it- as Yata is their side project on top of their real jobs.

I speculate that when GGPO is added other things will also get fixed.

If you get a chance, try to talk to them and see if they have any interest in adding the 12th char that didn't get funding as DLC. I think there will be interest. I've noticed so far Yata is keeping its online playerbase. Game hits the Skullgirls quickie 5-10 minutes niche for me with the added plus of not having to play Skullgirls.

So has there been any update on Neo's stolen items? I heard he lost his laptop and car keys in addition to his winnings, so I'm hopping that they may have found his laptop or something.

Dat Japanese prime time of 1am
Not just that, but Persona players not getting golden sticks, despite Smash (which doesn't use sticks) and Killer Instinct/Tekkem (which got fewer entrants) getting them (even ignoring the Friday slot vs the latter 2).

This is absolutely ridiculous for those players.

Healing tends to be a problematic mechanic in many multiplayer games. HP tends to be a direct representation of work and effort, and healing mechanics erase that. You tend to have to leave healing mechanics minor/weak, or else it takes over the entire meta.

Currently playing Smash 4 on a regular basis but I need to go out and practice at tournaments.

I casually play Melee, UMVC3 on 360 and USF4 on PS4, but nowhere near good enough to compete and still need to work on the fundamentals.

I'm all in for SF5. Already have it pre-ordered and got my beta access code today - will also be buying a stick/pad in the future.

On my way to the airport to head home. Idk what happened with Persona, tournament was great but the Friday stage was honestly super duper ass and the stick thing suuuccckkksss.

Champ, ChrisG and Justin (In MvC3 anyways) aren't even "Gods". People need to stop calling top players Gods.

People put those three in their own category because they were (and still are) by far the most accomplished players in umvc3 in terms of tournament wins. They also used to look almost unbeatable vs. any non-"god" players, but that doesn't look like it's true anymore.

Smash uses analog inputs. Does the robot game do that?
I don't think so.

It's 3 attack buttons like Marvel (Light, Medium, Heavy).

Then you have 3 special buttons for your 3 special attacks. They are designated as Alpha, Beta, Gamma like Assists from MVC2 (dat Seth Killian touch). Whenever you use one of those special moves they have a cooldown and they are displayed below your super meter.

Also you can change your 3 special attacks in the load out screen so it's similar to MKX/Marvel in that sense because there's definitely customization as well.

There was a good period where only these 3 won any majors and most other players didn't come close. It was definitely a gulf in skill and performance but now that gulf has been over taken. This was obvious in the last couple of majors too but at EVO it has become blatant now.

I really do believe that the whole God complex got to them. They started to believe their own hype and either got over confident or got too nervous due to the pressure. I really do believe that any other day we would've gotten those 3 in the top 8 although you could say the same for USF4 as well.

Just had Chinese food, in the fortune cookie: "How can you have a beautiful ending without making beautiful mistakes?", on the back: "Learn Chinese: Salt".

Feels like the fortune was meant for someone who just got bopped at Evo. Probably just seems more relevant than it was though, since I have Evo on the brain. :P

On paper that sounds pretty good.

Can you develop a little on those changes and other decisions ? Thanks.

The sidestep change made it so you can't block for a few frames after each sidestep. Most of the new characters also have really strong tracking moves. Watching Koreans play, the game looked like a 2d game, back and forth footsies with almost no lateral movement.

At Evo, it looked a lot better. While it might be due to the characters in the top 8, it seemed like a lot of players were getting successful sidesteps. Also with sidestep nerfed, the Korean playstyle of zipping around the screen and avoiding everything will be less dominant, which is probably why a lot of Koreans don't like T7 right now. At Evo, it looked like there was a good balance between movement, and having to respect offense more.

As for Namcos decisons, everything they've been doing with T7 is wack if you aren't in Japan/Korea. What really irked me was when they announced the 80k global tournament thats happening later this year, when we still don't even have a date for a console version. Namco will need to release a really sick console version if they want to repair the damage they've done to Tekkens reputation in the west, but the core gameplay of T7 looks really good right now.

Rising Thunder seems very interesting.

People use Healing. She's one of the few characters in the game (maybe only her and Ryu) that have all good supers. Since she doesn't have much in the way of combos she's played lame a lot.
Wait, people used Elena's SA1?

I saw some game play footage and the cooldowns on some of the attacks are too much.

Like a Dragon punch cooldown is close to 5 seconds, that's a lot. The cooldown for fireballs isn't that much but for the other two moves it's higher than I would like it to be.

are you gonna do a writeup
did you ask about ryu and bison's walkspeeds

Yeah we did a short interview with Peter and Matt. I can't say much yet until we go over what we can and can't say.

Also Haunts is a homie. He's always watching over us.

hope you guys got to talk about options/settings/quality of life type stuff. i want a game to actually see what other games (skullgirls) are doing when it comes to that. I totally didn't think of this question back when you were asking, but I'm realizing I'm really curious about this. I just want someone to go through it and figure out if its unnecessarily cumbersome to navigate the most frequently used menus and stuff. I don't want to get booted back all the way to the main screen of online modes if there's a failed connection or whatever if it's going to take another 4 screens to get back to searching or whatever, you know?

Man so much hate for the designs in the robot game in that other thread.

I actually like that art style, it's so clean and easy to see everything on screen. Very different from KI and MKX which are so busy and garish at times. It's very similar to DOTA/TF/Overwatch style.

The robots are cool too. Simple and clean.

Yeah I'm loving the character design from what I've seen so far.

i've gotta admit, i was pretty bummed when diago failed to make top 8, but what i got last night was an amazing performance that couldn't have played out any other way if any other players were involved.

1) to watch Gamerbee come in as the sentimental favorite, watch him turn into a heel with his healing abuse (people actually booed him!), only to regain the favor of the crowd was amazing.

2) that emotional and mental slugfest between infiltration and momochi was intense and showed exactly why in such a diverse cast, one needs more than a few pocket characters. at one point, the game was so meta that they were playing it in their minds...and then infiltration was reminded he couldn't spend too much time at the character select screen =/

3) all the things that happened outside of game only added to the buildup of hype. while some may see the stick malfunction as anti-hype, i saw it as just another incredible mental hurdle that both players had to overcome, despite already going through so much.

Rising Thunder seems very interesting.

Wait, people used Elena's SA1?
Sometimes. It has less range and damage than Brave Dance, but it still comes out fast, is good aa, more ex. Would have to dig around to find an sa1 player. Not many Elena players in general.

Which is exactly why I think Namco balanced T7 that way on purpose. They nerfed the very thing Koreans took advantage of the most and normalized high level play to the point where it seems everyone can be competitive.

Does anyone know when Madcatz is planning on shipping out these PS4 TE2s? I want to go ahead and upgrade with the SF5 beta coming. It says pre-order on the main page, but when I go through the motions it acts like I'm buying it right then. Says nothing about when it will actually be shipped.

I don't wanna slap down 200 bucks until I know.

That said, the whole Momochi/Infiltration thing to me is why I think smaller casts in fighting games can be a good thing.

That said, not sure if it's commercially viable these days.

it'll be interesting if SFV goes full MOBA and we end up with some kind of 60+ character cast a couple years down the line with some crazy counterpick meta and hella coin flips in every top 8
