So are you guys positive that if you upgrade to W10 now you won't have to reinstall later on when it's officially out? I have an iso here and a lot of freetime to perform an upgrade.

If this is actually RTM why is IE still showing the feedback smiley? Just curious..

They're still taking feedback basically

Yup, they've even said that insiders can now run it as is basically and opt out of insider updates.

Hasney do you have that link for the W10 RTM you mentioned? possibly PM it to me? Wouldn't mind upgrading to 10 now but not sure if I can use the normal method? my current copy of W8.1 was from Dreamspark.

Not sure if I can, but it doesn't matter anyway. MS have caught on and blocked browser downloads.

Well bugger looks like i'm waiting then

You can download the Insider Preview (there is also a technical preview which is AFAIK the public version? I'd get the Insider one just to be sure) on the DreamSpark website. It's the 10074 build iso.
I assume it either pulls the most recent build when the installer is started (because it was fetching updates for quite a while here) or it prompts you to update once the installation is done.

Will report back once the installation is complete.

you doing an upgrade on clean install? I'll keep an eye on the thread see what you say it's like before trying to download it. I'm not a student anymore and ran out of windows 8 keys so I don't want to bugger anything up and be left without windows I also don't know when they'll deactivate my account xD

So will there be a release ISO on the Microsoft website on the 29th? I want to do a clean install.

It's an upgrade (I guess you have to in order to get a genuine W10 as DreamSpark offers no W10 keys yet).
You get to keep every key from DreamSpark, they only cut you off from downloading stuff and obtaining new software so yeah... get everything you want/can before they pull the plug on you (I have like dozens of windows keys for all kinds of versions stored on my HDD as DS gives you unique keys with every single DL).

I'll report back though, it's restarting now.

Whelp! After spending the last few hours turning windows update back on and installing everything, I still can't get their reserve icon to appear.

I've even tried running that script of theirs but it's stuck on an indefinite loop here. I'm pretty sure this thing is as up to date as it can be.

Edit: nevermind. I tried the Dropbox file and it worked.

Well, I got in the pop up message telling me to reserve my copy of windows 10.

I reinstalled my OS after that, Windows 8.1, like a month ago and haven't had the pop up message since. there's no sign of me "reserving my copy"

what gives?

should i just let it go?

On or shortly after July 29th, there will be other ways to get Windows 10 that don't involve Windows Update. I can't speak to the specifics, but there will be options.

There is a .exe on MS.com that start the update process. That's what I did.

ah there's nothing more I need of there unless I suddenly want to go back to vista xD I might end up doing this tonight then if you report back that it's okay

I have an institutional copy as well and it worked fine.

Well it's taking up 10GB less than 8.1 did and that's after a full windows cleanup before install. Since my SSD is only 64GB, I approve.

I hope there is an ISO option. I'll do the windows update method for my laptop but I want to do a fresh install on my desktop and would like to just install 10 straight away instead of 8.1 and then 10.

Wow if true, I'm on the same boat with the SSD. You sure it was not just temp files or sth like that being deleted? I forgot to check my disk space before the change.

I ran the cleanup as I needed 10GB to install, then went through all the appdata folders to delete the the MP files it might have missed. Got to 9.something and it worked. Had the same space when I booted into 10, but ran cleanup again and got rid of the windows.old and had a shitton of space!

I don't know if you had better luck than me, but I tried this on my extra laptop yesterday that I procrastinated putting 10 on. Downloaded 10074 from Dreamspark, installed and let it update. Then it wouldn't go to any higher builds. I googled and it seemed like most people who weren't on the newest couldn't update their builds further either. (Says you're on the newest build, no updates). Then I came across this solution and it let me update to the proper 10240 build and everything works great now.

i noticed some extra space as well, but then i saw that the system managed page file was set to over 10GB. pretty sure it was much less before the upgrade

also is there any way to remove entries in the notification area settings? some of these leftover items don't seem to do anything. checked to see if the GWX folder was still listed under System32 and it's gone

You literally stopped me from reinstalling W8.1. Downloading the 10240 build as we speak.

10240 refuses to install on my Surface Pro, using the en-GB pro x64 ESD.

As the people over at my digital life have been managing to upgrade from Win 7 and Win 8.1 to activated versions of 10240, I thought I would try on my surface pro rather than my desktop.

Just gives me some non-specific error before the first restart stage in the upgrade.
"Something happened - Windows 10 installation failed", not very helpful.

Can't see any reason why, hashes all match so don't think anything is corrupt.
Guess I will have to wait until it's rolled out to me after release.

I want to install Windows 10 on another computer in my house, but they aren't giving out ISO's anymore

I looked into it, and they have some old ESD's that you can convert into older win 10 build ISO's

has this worked for anyone else?

I want to do this to ease my schedule.

I don't have an old ISO either anymore, seems like I deleted it.

I want to upgrade early but I am dragging my feet. Unless there is a simple easy method to get the latest release I will more than likely wait until the 29th.

Just upgraded to Windows 10. Let's see how this goes.

Took off my ClassicShell just to familiarize myself more with the new menu updates.

Anyone might help me with a problem I have?

Everytime I shut down the PC and turn it on again, my icons are big as hell, even though in the display options they are set at 100%. So I have to change the slider to 125% and back to 100% and log out of my Windows account so it has the normal size again.

Anyone has a clue what might be causing it?

I installed Windows 10.

When it launches will I get a product key to activate on the 29th? I've purchased 2 windows 8s under my Microsoft account

No. Free upgrades just get activated by MS. The old key should activate if you need to reinstall anytime though.

So what happens to us who used the generic key? Will it auto register on its on after the 29th?

As in some random generic key you found on the internet, or the generic key you get when upgrading Windows?

The former will likely be blocked from activating, the latter should be already activated.

Really sorry I'm sure this has been asked ad nausea, but can I upgrade to W10 right now, without losing any of my save files/installed programs/games or stuffing up anything when the 29th comes around?

If so, can someone post a link of how to get started?

Yup. No link since they all have ISOs, but you just mount the disc image and I'll install as long as you don't have an N version of 7/8.
