Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

You can defer upgrades on Pro, unless you know enough to mess with drivers and prevent updates to ensure testing with a particular application you rely on there isn't much reason to even need to defer updates. This is to protect the average consumer by installing needed patches and security fixes that would otherwise cause system instability and vulnerabilities. This is a good thing for the average person, if you need this extra control you are going to have to go Pro.

That said, you can just go into the Control Panel > Region and set it to United States and she will activate herself without needing a restart... also you will get access to the US App store
I tried doing that months ago and it didn't work (on beta build).

Really, just switched back from Canada to USA and it re-enabled that for me... maybe try it again, because I've had the preview installed since mid-June and it has always worked for me.

This is my settings.
My Region is United States
My System Locale is English (Canada)
Keyboard is English (United States), but it also works under English (Canada)

Granted there is no reason we should need to do this considering Cortana can do both French and English... and from my experience on WP she already has a pretty good data-set.

Stability/bugs wise, how does Windows 10 compare so far with Windows 7? I'm thinking about upgrading. Is it worth it?

If I were to upgrade from my 8.1 N install now, it should just keep updating and stuff just fine after that?

I need something to do and installing this is a little tempting.

The N version isn't out, so you wouldn't be able to upgrade.

I'm fairly sure Windows Update won't attempt to install drivers if you've already installed newer versions yourself. At least it's never attempted to install graphics drivers for me.

Looks like the driver thing can be disabled per device if this hasn't changed:

Alright last one, hows the pdf reading? Should I go for something 3rd party like sumatra or is there something native that works well?

Edge is the default PDF viewer for me. Seems to work well.

With pretty much all browsers supporting PDF natively, there's no need to muck around with 3rd party readers that might one day turn into adware messes (RIP FoxIt Reader).

Every new install:
"Would you like to set Chrome as the Default Browser?"

Sure would, lets click on the Default button with the admin icon!

"Go to System -> Default Apps to change the Default Apps."

...

Microsoft with that classic "please use our shit" workaround.

And still some links refuse to open in Chrome and open straight into Edge for some reason.

How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 for free? And should I do it before or after reformatting?

Haven't you got the Windows icon in your notification tray yet? Instructions are there.

First time I clicked on a link I got a "You have new shit that can do this" prompt. Picked Chrome and everything has opened in it since. It's probably the best way to stop an install from hijacking all the file associations.

But when it comes to Office on the desktop, the free one from the store that will be built-in is truly free to open and view Office files? I really dislike how in the rare event I do get any Office document, I have to view it in OneDrive.

To view documents, yes they are free.

My cousin has a Windows 8.1 Single Language. However he still has not received the reservation icon... He assurres me every system update is installed.

Is it a common issue? Is it his Windows version?
What can he do to fix it?

One of my three Win 7 systems is also not showing the reservation link. At this point I figured I'll wait until the 29th and see how it goes.

So I've also read today that the rollout on the 29th will be phased, so not everyone who reserved it will get it on the day. Well worth using the RTM for those that can.

TH1 Professional 10240 keeps rolling back on update. What's the deal, friends? Is it checking for Windows 7 / 8 now?

I'm tempted to do it as it should be an easy upgrade from Win 8 for me - but I'm reading that the RTM ends up assigning a generic product key to your system.

Dunno why, but I don't like the sound of that... is that how's it's supposed to be now? Or will the phased roll out still end up with people having different product keys?

It sounds like the activation is held at MS regardless for that PC. Think the real upgrade will do the same thing.

Where can I go to download this, non torrent? I'm in the Microsoft Windows tech preview site, but they're not letting people download it for PC right now since it is so close to official release. I already have a product code and everything, though not sure if that would matter or not.

Search for an ESD link. It links to the MS site, you just need to decrypt and turn it into a .iso.

According to their FAQ I have to use Windows Update just to get that reserve button.
So I tried turning Windows Update back on, but for some reason it won't budge from 0%. Nothing will download.

I've already tried stopping the service and clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder. But Windows Update is still stuck at 0%.

Does anyone have any idea on how to get this p.o.s. updater to work? I'm on 8.1.

When I did a big update after a reinstall, it took about an hour to move off of 0%. It'll happen.

This makes me sad. I'm counting on Windows 10 being good, but forced updates could singlehandedly make me never install it.

It's just a non-starter. Not only because I sometimes do things like using old drivers for compatibility, but because no OS should force install that many things, including third party and non-security related.

Apparently even Windows 10 Pro can only put off an install, not stop it completely. We can only hope MS reconsiders within the 1st year.
just go into all settings -> updates -> advanced -> uncheck "give me updates for other products when I update windows"

My free update isn't popping up in my task bar :S

I tried the script they mentioned on Windows, which didn't work either.

I don't really want to try that dropbox script method.

Just grab the RTM and try updating now that way. Google the EDS link which I would post, but I'm not sure it's allowed since it's not supposed to be out to the public yet.

Great to know. Should work with graphics cards?

Yup, and that method Captive posted just above you should work too if you don't want anything to update other than Windows.
