So I'll aks again here, maybe someone can help me.

I'm currently using Win7 and I made a reservation for Windows 10 with the pop up thingy.

Now I decided to upgrade my SSD before Win10 hits. Do I still get the update after doing a fresh Win7 install on my new SSD? Do I have to cancel my reservation on my old one first?

Would be rgeat if someone can help me :)

This seems to be the most relevant place to ask about this, so:

1. Is it normal for upgrades from 7 to 10 to be slow for a while (or indefinitely)? I upgraded earlier today, I'm on an SSD->boot, HDD->storage setup, and simple stuff like trying to open the task manager can hang for a second or two. Games on my HDD take 5-10 seconds longer to open.

I'm assuming part of this is the OS trying to scrounge through my drives at the moment so that search will be faster? There's a "We're getting search ready..." note at the top of the window, and it can be very hit-or-miss at the moment, so I'm assuming that's what it is.

2. How can I fix Microsoft Edge's text? I wouldn't mind getting acquainted with it, but it's so hard to look at.

Is your data disk drive spinning down between uses?

I'm on Windows 7 Pro N and I think I'm fully upgraded except for a damn Internet Explorer updated that fails to install each time I try. Do I need to get that upgrade before I can see the 'Reserve Windows 10' icon?

Yeah Microsoft no longer lets you download them. I don't really trust any iso if it's not from an official source..or at least not p2p

There are links to the EDS files floating about that links direct to MS's servers. Then you just convert it to ISO.

I'm using bootcamp and I've registered to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 and would like to do a clean install once 10 is released. Will there be access to an ISO so that I can reinstall through bootcamp?

I am wondering the same thing too. I'm iffy about driver support - will the current 8.1 drivers work under 10 or will we have to wait on apple, as they usually take a few months before updating.

I'm not sure if you will need to cancel your current reservation, but as soon as you update the system and download the specific one that gives you the prompt to reserve Windows 10, you should be fine.

Might try again, but I already made a Windows 10 USB earlier and when it was installed, it wouldn't activate, even though I installed it within my genuine Windows 7.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Activation servers are spotty, think they're testing something. If it installs without asking for a key, you should be fine.

Have just formatted my SSD, installed Windows 7 and all the updates. When the desktop comes up, my internet connection (I'm on LAN) hangs for about a minute before it connects to the internet. During this time I notice theres a 'WMX' process running in task manager, when it disappears, my internet starts working.

Anyone else have this problem. It seems like the very last Windows update I installed (KB3035583) is the issue, but I don't know whether I can or should uninstall it.

Ah yeah I did get asked for a key.

So I should keep trying until it doesn't ask for one?

Edit: seems to be always asking for a product key just after the Get Important Updates screen

Was it a copy that came with your computer? My Windows 8 key that came with this laptop doesn't work either because it's technically a different edition with HP. Think it's only retail Windows and non-custom OEM going through right now.

Yeah it's the Windows 7 that came with the laptop.

That's news to me.

So, I can't decide what GPU drivers I use?

Window Pro users will be able to ignore certain updates (I don't think this has been implemented yet). Windows Home users are forced to install them. Right now, video card drivers appear to be included in these essential updates.

Seems like a bad idea to me.

So does it say activated if you are a part of the insider program or did it somehow grab my license from my BIOS (alienware x51)? Because I was all worried about having to downgrade to upgrade, since I did a fresh install on a SSD, but it says activated so I think I'm good?

I did clean installs of Windows 10 Pro 10166 on two computers and updated to 10240. One was an HP Pavilion that came with Windows 8 Home Premium, and the other a Brix Pro that never had Windows on it.

The HP activated (giving me a free Home -> Pro upgrade it seems), but the Brix Pro has not. So I would assume it's because it grabbed the license from your BIOS, not because you're an insider.

Even pro users can only defer for 8 months.

Wait, GPU drivers are updated outside of windows update, how can Microsoft force updates in that case?

Windows Update pushed the latest Nvidia drivers to me in the Windows 10 preview even though I already had the same version installed. No warning. I stepped away from my computer for an hour or two and came back wondering why my resolution had been changed to 1024x768.

Not only did it reinstall the base drivers, it also installed the extras like 3D Vision. Stuff I didn't want installed in the first place.

That sounds like a bug, I've had no issues with installing the drivers I want and them sticking. (Also NVIDIA).

Here's some questions:

-Say I 'upgrade' my windows 7 key to windows 10, can I still install and use windows 7 later on? Or will it invalidate my key for windows 7?

-performance and compatibility issues in games? With 7 there are none and I have no interest in switching until there are none in 8.

-any mouse lag or acceleration bullshit like windows 8 had initially?

edit: oh forced updates, I'll stick to windows 7

Sounds awful.

So I haven't really been following Windows 10 development but are they really not having extension support at launch for Edge? That is a colossal fuck up. IE, FF, and Chrome are all terrible just by themselves and most people are going to boot up Edge, try to install AdBlock or a video downloader, see that it isn't supported and probably never open the browser again.

Microsoft wanted to spend Edge development time on making sure the browser is quality. Extension support is coming in after launch.

All of these tech companies that already sold us out to the government are really making a lot of noise about how much they respect user privacy.

Yeah, you can never remake a good first impression.

I forgot about the forced update thing including drivers, I think I'll hold off on changing to W10 until MS addresses that.
The Forced/Automatic updates service can be disabled with a command line. Simplest way is simply putting the Windows Update service to manual start and just engaging it when you want updates instead of it being on Automatic.

Edit: You can use these powershell commands to enable or disable it.

Disable:
Code:
stop-service wuauserv
set-service wuauserv –startup disabled

Enable:
Code:
set-service wuauserv –startup manual
start-service wuauserv

Yeah, that's one of my main concerns with this force update situation. I don't like installing any of that nvidia fluff.

I'm really fighting the urge to just install it now, but it's only 9 days.

I only have a 64Gb SSD with Win 7 mounted on it.

Is this download going to cause issues?

Don't know if I can be arsed swapping out HDD's but I probably should at this point

If I were to upgrade from my 8.1 N install now, it should just keep updating and stuff just fine after that?

I need something to do and installing this is a little tempting.

Does Cortana work in Canada yet?

Cortana is a wierd feature. On Windows Phone 8.1, she is enabled in Alpha Mode and works pretty well, if limited. On Windows 10 (and 10 Mobile), she is disabled. So I think its going to be down to how much we complain on the Cortana and Windows Uservoice again.

That said, you can just go into the Control Panel > Region and set it to United States and she will activate herself without needing a restart... also you will get access to the US App store

I see Firefox updated to fix that wonky window boarder issue it was having.

Chrome however, has not updated. (I'm normally a chrome user, but I noticed it was using 100% of my CPU with only 4 tabs open so I went to Firefox).

That's pretty bad. Wondering if your computer updated and what exactly it did shouldn't be part of a troubleshooting process. The average user won't even know what to do if that happened to them. I'm all for staying updated most of the time, but sound and video drivers can be a case of "if it isn't broken, don't fix it."

This makes me sad. I'm counting on Windows 10 being good, but forced updates could singlehandedly make me never install it.

It's just a non-starter. Not only because I sometimes do things like using old drivers for compatibility, but because no OS should force install that many things, including third party and non-security related.

Apparently even Windows 10 Pro can only put off an install, not stop it completely. We can only hope MS reconsiders within the 1st year.

It seems like a really stupid move and I can't understand why it's still a thing so close to release.
