All of this is true.

Taylor really needed to take a step back and think about what Nicki was saying before emotional shitposting.

What's worse is that there are legitimate media issues that have been dragged into the light by this but the media decided to prove itself immune to irony by doubling down on their blinders and now Nicki is just the effigy of 'black woman on twitter'.

1. What does breaking viewing records have to do with it being a good video or not, or deserving a nomination.
2. Beyonce is thin by black standards? What does that even mean.
3. How is Nicki Minaj not a "big" figure in "white (pop) media?" Her album went gold, might go platinum, she's constantly on pop radio, etc.

Nicki sounds entitled, mad, and ridiculous. Her racial charges sounded even more dumb when you realize half the nominees for video of the year are minorities. This has nothing to do with "women in hip hop" or whatever other insular attempt she tries to divide this into a controversy.

To be perfectly honest, Anaconda and Bad Blood are bloated, shitty music videos.

She benefits from the same media biases because she plays the same game, making the same music, aimed at the same demographic. Nicki gets played in places that would never touch people like, I dunno, Amel Larrieux or Bahamadia.

edit: did you know that Lauryn Hill dropped a cover of "Feeling Good" last month? Probably not. I didn't even know that until 5 minutes ago. That's someone who suffers from "white media" not playing her shit.

That's a great post, and it's too bad Nicki didn't say something like that. I do understand a lot better now, her point of view.

It doesn't mean I agree with it, however. The highest grossing movie of the year does not and should not mean more Oscar nominations, for example.

Then again, this is the MTV video awards we're talking about, so I kind of understand her frustration again.

Every award show that Nicki has been at has had very big messages about women empowerment and even commenting on the double standards held by gun point to women and why despite being heavily criticized for it, why she does it

Wasn't Nicki the main attraction of some Music Awards this year in Scotland or something like that? I don't get the hate of "white media". She is pretty popular and she is very well featured in the biggest pop events. Anyway, Beyonce's and Rihanna's success make this argument weird.

Anaconda is one of the worst songs Nicki has done and the video was nothing special aside from showing off her body.

Both are bad, but both are popular which is what these awards are based on. The fact that Anaconda more than qualifies for what was done (breaking the internet, causing a twitter uproar and breaking records) to not even be nominated, compare to Taylor's video that literally came out 2 months ago is a joke. MTV just handed Taylor Swift an award she didn't even have to work for. On top of having a cast of super well known supermodels and other celebrity women to make the point of the video being about girl power and being progressive, when it really was about her feud with Katy. I should say that it shocking that you find her to be bitter about something history has proven a 1000x times to be true but I really am not. It's the reason why TVONE has Unsung...maybe you should watch it and learn something about black music.

As I said above, its not about how the video looks and the song attached. It's about popularity which puts Nicki directly in that catergory. She shattered the most popular by being the most popular and she doesn't get a shot to prove it? Bullshit.

Bad look from Taylor. It does show complacency on her part, with the way she 'cordially' invites Nicki on stage for when she inevitably 'wins' her awards, but also with the way she deflects the crux of Nicki's argument, by making it about 'pitting women against each other.' At the end of the day, Nicki and Taylor are not on equal footing in the mainstream, and it will always boil down to race, whether Swift agrees with that or not.

With that said, Nicki implying Tidal flopped exclusively due to race is also misguided. I'm sure it's a factor, but the campaign, the rollout and the pricing played bigger roles.
 
Either I don't get Nicki's argument, or it's a flawed one.

Tidal's failure is not because someone black was running it.
And because T-Swift is skinny isn't going to make her video more appealing. On the contrary, I think Starships and Super Bass are actually pretty decent videos.

And it's not because she's black she's not winning..

So... she can point out some media biases, but this doesn't seem to be the case here.
If you're going to point out racism and sexism, awesomesauce. But you gotta be on point.
