The most racist places in America...according to Google.

Not the least bit surprising based on my experiences.

I'm surprised as SHIT. I'm from Cleveland and I have never seen a confederate flag in my life. I move to Tampa, FL and apparently, my city flies the largest confederate flag in the U.S. I see it every time I use the highway (I-75). Additionally, I was on my way to dinner with some friends a few weeks ago and passed a confederate flag rally along the way. We saw at least 60 or 70 pick-up trucks with confederate flags in the back.

I know it's anecdotal, but still. You'd NEVER see that kind of stuff in my area of Ohio (which is one of the reddest areas on the map)

I live in Florida and I'm surprised at the results. No one should be surprised about south Florida, but the area around Orlando being red while the area around Jacksonville being blue?! Completely opposite of what I would expect.

I grew up near Orlando and moved to Jacksonville for college and have to say the Google map is incredibly accurate.

I have met and seen some of the most racist people in my life in Orlando's neighboring towns/cities (winter park, lake Mary, etc).

Most people don't expect those areas to be racist since there are fairly little rednecks driving around and are seen as more upscale/affluent but that's not the case.

Data scientist my ass that map seems totally wrong. Context search of the N word seems like a stupid way.

Why not on people looking for info on known racist organizations.

I live in upstate NY and haven't seem any blatant racism at least not in Albany, NY. Not sure where people are getting this from. But then again everyone in NYC thinks anything outside of it is rural so not surprising, originally from East NY by the way. Maybe further up north?

It's very rare to see confederate flags where I live and there is also a-lot of mixed couples.

This further reinforces my belief that Bend, Oregon should be nuked. It cannot hold the rest of the state back.

I'm...assuming you're talking about that one light blue area that's still less racist than average?

You'd like to nuke a place for being less racist than average? Kinda rough lol

This is somewhat off topic but I didn't want to make a thread about it because OKAY JUST LOOK AT ALL THESE GRAPHS

Kind of interesting that one of the few areas that is dark blue in the South(historically not geographically) was the capital of the Confederacy Richmond.

I've only seen a confederate flag around here (Akron area) once or twice but that's not really what I meant. Someone mentioned "white flight" and I think that's pretty accurate to what goes on around here. There are a handful of predominantly black neighborhoods that have a bad reputation so there's kind of a.. willful segregation between demographics as most neighborhoods around here were predominantly white until 20 or 30 years ago. And so amongst the baby boomer generation there is a lot of real racism left over in the area. The younger generations are a lot better about it obviously, seeing this outdated way of thinking locally versus national and global trends of integration and acceptance. But it leads to a lot of casual or sarcastic or tongue-in-cheek usage of "the n word" and considering the metrics of this data, in that respect I don't find the results surprising. At least that's the way I see it.

Awkward... Texas is more blue. :o

I have said this in a million threads, but I heard WAY more racist shit everywhere else I have lived. We saw another similar thread recently with a similar result.

It's a shitty state, don't get me wrong, but it's not what people imagine it to be before they move here IME.

Louisiana is 30% black.
interracial dating, marriage, and a generally mixed society is the norm here. You have people who are racial mutts of white and black all over the place. Im sure my family has some (the cajun side most certainly does) mixed heritage.
I just think this method of pigeonholing states is kinda silly in light of some states having a hell of a lot more experience dealing with a significant amount of other races. That said, I wouldnt deny that both backs and whites here can be racist as hell simply due to being in close proximity to one another and airing out their differences. New Orleans being less racist is kind of hmm..

West coast is best coast as usual.
From the other map it seems the entire west side of the country could be racist against black people but there aren't any around to manifest it towards.

The supposed racism-levels map would also seem to be saying that very few people in Arizona are racist against Hispanics, lol.

Being around the central Texas folk I am not surprised. Very nice people there in the hill country always looking to lend a hand despite color. Unless you talk rude to them.

That graphic just shows what I've known for years, and why it pisses me off whenever I hear dumb shit like all racists and bigots live in the south. I've been all over this country and without a doubt I've run into more racists in the northeast than anywhere else in the US. This is only shocking if you've had your head in the sand for the past 30 years.

Pretty poor connection. Use of the word has a weak link to modern incarnations of racism. Largely due to being taboo.

The rural northeast can be extremely backwards and racist, and parts of it do feel exactly like the deep south. No surprises there. Upstate NY is an entirely different world from NYC. There are a lot of poor towns now with no jobs, no upward mobility and stagnant lives turning to cynicism, drugs, and crime. Upstate NY used to be a summer vacation destination for a lot of affluent city-goers, but most of that has dried up over time.

Tons of people who live even a two or three hour drive away from the City have never even gone there. Then you travel abroad and people in Europe are saving up money for years to fulfill their dreams of just visiting NYC once. Hey, no need for that, guys and gals, just watch some Fox News and be scared of what's happening outside of the comfort of your home.
Not just NY there are many super racist towns in NJ as well. Vorhees, Watchung Hills, Middletown South, MANY of the towns in South Jersey you can't even drive through as a black male and NOT get pulled over. This study does not surprise me at all. The most comfortable I have been has been when I visited Cali, no one even blinked an I at my wife and I when we went there. It's like night and day vs the south.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking.

I don't know who just randomly googles the n-word. It sounds like something a 10-year-old does when he's alone at his computer with friends, just typing in naughty things.

They should also check nationwide searches for f----t, c--t, boob, shit, piss etc. See if they vary significantly.

The area of New Jersey that is supposedly racist is overwhelmingly populated by minorities. Seems off unless Hispanic and Indian people really hate black people.

This is based off searches? Because, uh, the most racist people I know never flat-out use racial slurs. I'd say looking at election results for each district is far more telling than web activity.

The biggest complaint I got from the upstaters was blaming the city for every ill, and every single tax. It's crazy how the right has blamed urban dwellers and sustainable taxation for all their ills.

What's funny is they forget how many of their roads and services are paid for by NYC and it's visitors. Most of the taxes bitched about either don't apply to people outside of the city, or primarily target tourists and are a huge net positive for the state meaning that while they might pay a bit, but they make it back in multiples.

It's a similar concept to how the states that take the most tax money from the feds are almost entirely made up of the states that pay the least. A superiority complex combined with a dismal reality and slick Fox News messaging are potent as hell for blaming whoever is deemed the bad guy be it academics, minorities, urbanites, or the gays.

This reminds me of the same type of people in downstate Illinois. Some of them legitimately call for secession every now and then from "The Chicago state".

I really couldn't believe their metric for racism was to ONLY measure the usage of the word nigger and filtering out the various searches that aren't pejorative in nature but that really was the case.

http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0122963#pone.0122963.ref001

It's a good start but the scope of racism goes further than discrimination against those regarded as black. Also a racist spending their time looking for proof to certify their beliefs doesn't need to and shouldn't be using the word nigger because articles don't have that word in them. A racist doesn't want to waste time looking through worthless web pages anymore than anyone else looking for the articles they want.

Country rooooads, take me hoooome, to the plaaaace, where everyone hates black people.

Also, I don't believe Arizona isn't racist. Maybe just the lawmakers? Seems like the metrics are off.

Very true. Houstonian here. I've never experienced racism here or seen a confederate flag but then again I rarely get outside beltway 8.

The confederate flag in general seems less popular in Texas than it does Georgia/Alabama.

I don't think that makes them less racist though. They just have other ways of showing it.

This study is inherently flawed. It assumes that searching for the 'n' word is done with inherently racist intent.

Searching for the use of the "n" word may be done by African Americans who use the word themselves on a regular basis and/or by people of any ethnicity searching for song titles or lyrics.

There is no way to distinguish racist search intent and to distinguish whether someone of African American descent conducted the search.

Maybe, just maybe Utah's a fluke.

But Idaho? I don't believe it for a damn second.
The search term used for the study isn't one that many people of those two states would use. I'd assume more of the racism there would be centered towards Hispanic populations which are much more prevalent in those two states than black populations.

That map falls in line with my experience living in Upstate NY. It's gotta be 95% white where I live. The county I live in is one of the most segregated in the US.
