This further reinforces my belief that Bend, Oregon should be nuked. It cannot hold the rest of the state back.
Am I missing something? (like sarcasm?)
Bend is a liberal oasis, as well as the economic hub, of central Oregon.

Not the least bit surprising based on my experiences.
I live in Florida and I'm surprised at the results. No one should be surprised about south Florida, but the area around Orlando being red while the area around Jacksonville being blue?! Completely opposite of what I would expect.
I lived in AZ for a few years and I call bull shit on that blue.

I've only seen a confederate flag around here (Akron area) once or twice but that's not really what I meant. Someone mentioned "white flight" and I think that's pretty accurate to what goes on around here. There are a handful of predominantly black neighborhoods that have a bad reputation so there's kind of a.. willful segregation between demographics as most neighborhoods around here were predominantly white until 20 or 30 years ago. And so amongst the baby boomer generation there is a lot of real racism left over in the area. The younger generations are a lot better about it obviously, seeing this outdated way of thinking locally versus national and global trends of integration and acceptance. But it leads to a lot of casual or sarcastic or tongue-in-cheek usage of "the n word" and considering the metrics of this data, in that respect I don't find the results surprising. At least that's the way I see it.I'm surprised as SHIT. I'm from Cleveland and I have never seen a confederate flag in my life. I move to Tampa, FL and apparently, my city flies the largest confederate flag in the U.S. I see it every time I use the highway (I-75). Additionally, I was on my way to dinner with some friends a few weeks ago and passed a confederate flag rally along the way. We saw at least 60 or 70 pick-up trucks with confederate flags in the back.
I know it's anecdotal, but still. You'd NEVER see that kind of stuff in my area of Ohio (which is one of the reddest areas on the map)
Awkward... Texas is more blue.![]()
From the other map it seems the entire west side of the country could be racist against black people but there aren't any around to manifest it towards.West coast is best coast as usual.
The most racist person I've ever met was from New York.
PIC IS ACCURATE
Utah in blue already proves this isn't all there. -_-
It's a shitty state..
Confirms what I've been thinking for awhile...I live on the wrong damned coast.
Not just NY there are many super racist towns in NJ as well. Vorhees, Watchung Hills, Middletown South, MANY of the towns in South Jersey you can't even drive through as a black male and NOT get pulled over. This study does not surprise me at all. The most comfortable I have been has been when I visited Cali, no one even blinked an I at my wife and I when we went there. It's like night and day vs the south. The rural northeast can be extremely backwards and racist, and parts of it do feel exactly like the deep south. No surprises there. Upstate NY is an entirely different world from NYC. There are a lot of poor towns now with no jobs, no upward mobility and stagnant lives turning to cynicism, drugs, and crime. Upstate NY used to be a summer vacation destination for a lot of affluent city-goers, but most of that has dried up over time.
Tons of people who live even a two or three hour drive away from the City have never even gone there. Then you travel abroad and people in Europe are saving up money for years to fulfill their dreams of just visiting NYC once. Hey, no need for that, guys and gals, just watch some Fox News and be scared of what's happening outside of the comfort of your home.
This is somewhat off topic but I didn't want to make a thread about it because OKAY JUST LOOK AT ALL THESE GRAPHS
Honestly every single population chart map always looks the same for any data, it has very little to the left and then intensifies all the way to the right.
In other news BLACK people susceptible to POWERPLANT radiation that causes ADHD, OBESITY AND DIABETES according to collection of graphs.
EDIT: Ahah! I knew it

The biggest complaint I got from the upstaters was blaming the city for every ill, and every single tax. It's crazy how the right has blamed urban dwellers and sustainable taxation for all their ills.
What's funny is they forget how many of their roads and services are paid for by NYC and it's visitors. Most of the taxes bitched about either don't apply to people outside of the city, or primarily target tourists and are a huge net positive for the state meaning that while they might pay a bit, but they make it back in multiples.
It's a similar concept to how the states that take the most tax money from the feds are almost entirely made up of the states that pay the least. A superiority complex combined with a dismal reality and slick Fox News messaging are potent as hell for blaming whoever is deemed the bad guy be it academics, minorities, urbanites, or the gays.
From what I remember about population, pretty high correlation. How well do the red areas correlate with high black population?
Florida doesn't know what is it.
Not surprised that the Panhandle isn't blue.Awkward... Texas is more blue.![]()
Folks are sad that Texas isn't as Racist as they thought.
Sorry to disappoint!
Very true. Houstonian here. I've never experienced racism here or seen a confederate flag but then again I rarely get outside beltway 8.
Awkward... Texas is more blue.![]()
Not very well at all.

And unrelated to that, but I gotta call BS on the conclusion here tbh.
The search term used for the study isn't one that many people of those two states would use. I'd assume more of the racism there would be centered towards Hispanic populations which are much more prevalent in those two states than black populations.Maybe, just maybe Utah's a fluke.
But Idaho? I don't believe it for a damn second.
Pretty sure it's the American air suffocating our Canadian professors![]()
