Can someone give me some opinions on this laptop? I would definitely upgrade the ram. It would mainly be for gaming. Thanks.

Do we have an idea when the Alienware lineup is getting a refresh? Soon?
I'm just examining my options now before I buy, I'm in no rush to buy now.

Hi guys! I've been kicking around getting a new laptop since my MacBook Pro broke down. I'm looking to switch to Windows, and almost bought a Lenovo Y50-70 Touch until I saw all the people having issues with the hinges. Pretty scary that so many have the issue and Lenovo refuses to fix it unless you pay $200. Anyways...
Looking at one of these guys:

Or

I'd take the updated MSI GE72 , which also has the GTX 965M. Speakers on the Asus are total shite buckets.
I'm pretty sure they're skipping Broadwell, and waiting on Skylake. No ETA on that.
Sorry to ask again, but does anyone have some recommendations on a laptop with similar specs for about $500? Unfortunately I waited too long and now it's out of stock (and listed for $50 more than last time I saw it, too!).
I have an opportunity to buy a custom gaming laptop from a friend who is a tech hobbyist who loves building and selling rigs. He's got a good reputation and usually offers great prices for what you're getting.
The timing couldn't be better as my current gaming laptop (see below) is failing. So I'm looking for a reality check on the value of the offer.
For sale: $1500
Alienware M18x with the following spec's (http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-18/pd)
18.4" WLED FHD 1920x1080 Display
Intel Core i7-4800MQ CPU (up to 3.7GHz with TurboBoost)
32GB of Ram
1TB Crucial M550 SSD
1TB 7200RPM SATA HD
Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX780M GPU w/4GB DDR5 Ram each.
$1500 is the absolute upper limit on what I can afford.
Now here's a few brief stats on my current rig:
Lenovo Y500
2X NVIDIA GeForce GT650M 2GB
RAM: 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
HDD: 1TB 5400RPM+16GB SSD
It feels like it's hanging by a thread with screen issues and AC adapter problems.
So what do you guys think? Would that $1500 be better spent buying a NEW gaming laptop with a better card? I doubt I'd be able to get a higher-end dual SLI & 1TB SSD in the $1500 range.
Should I go for it or keep shopping? Is the purchasing laptop far enough ahead of what I currently own to make it worth it?
Thanks!!
780m I don't like.
What GPUs should I be looking for if I want a midrange or higher card?
I want to be able to play Xcom 2 and Civ VI on it at 1080p as well as backlog games from 2013 and older.
The laptops I am looking at now have mostly 840m, 850m, 860m or 960m, neither of which are mentioned in the OP.
I am also kind of interested in the Lenovo ThinkPad E540 with GT 740 but that is a bit low end right?

840M is fine for basic Minecraft level gaming. Is the 840m any good for basic games? Nothing fancy, just for a kids laptop.
Also, is there much to choose between i3-5010u, i3-4010u and i5-4200u? For general daily use and only occasional gaming
Looking at ideally no more than £500
Edit: potential shortlist would be
- Asus transformer tp300la (i5-4200u, 1366x768 screen, 500GB HDD) - £429
- lenovo yoga 2 (i5-4210u, 1080p screen, 8GB SSD for cache with 500GB HDD) - £549
-Asus Zenbook UX305 (core M-5Y10c, 1080p screen, 128GB SSD) - £649
Anybody have any opinions on this laptop? I need something for around $700.
Buy one of these. 980M is faster than dual 780Ms, and you get something with a warranty.
Outside of the speakers being slightly subpar, how's the Asus ROG G751JL-DS71?

My ceiling is about where this guy is at, but I'm thinking it's my best bet.
I think the new MSIs are rolling in with the new Intel CPUs. Shouldn't be too far away, then...
HEY! PC MASTER RACE!
My neighbor wants the "best" gaming laptop, period.
I warned him he will hate whatever it is because it will be a giant hot ugly bastard. So...
1. What is the undisputed current King for perf etc.
2. What's the amazing compromise between power and form factor that's surprisingly portable?
In either case, money is no object.
Buying the highest performing machine (SLI machine) is a mistake.
You SHOULD NOT buy SLI laptops. After a year, a single card of the next mobile flagship is equal to your SLI, in a laptop that costs half as much as your $4k dual card monstrosity, and it'll actually be somewhat portable. Thus your resale value hits the toilet, hard.
It's better to buy a $2k laptop every year, than it is to buy a $4k laptop once. You could buy a GTX 970M or 980M machine now, then a Pascal based machine in 2016. That's the route to go.
Thanks, do you personally have a model you'd recommend?

If dude's got 3K to burn and doesn't care about resale, couldn't he just grab a MSI GT80 Titan?
MSi GT series also has upgradable graphics cards, although MXM is usually a little pricier than desktop. At least you have that option, and it's less than 2K for 2 cards.

I need a new laptop but it's not really for gaming, so if there's another thread I should go to please point me there. Otherwise...
Country: USA
Maximum budget: Cheap is the goal here. I will pay for quality, but I don't think what I require should be very expensive
Maximum size: Small and portable is the goal here. Just not like "mini" sized.
Planned usage: Internet browsing. Reading. Netflix. Basic office stuff (writing, spreadsheets, databases, etc). Programming. I'm taking a free online course right now and using Enthought Canopy, and if everything goes to plan I'm going to be getting deeper into programming (not sure how deep because I'm a total novice). Photoshop, or more accurately GIMP. I like being able to make my own funny pictures. Maybe light video editing.
As for gaming, I wouldn't mind being able to play some games on it, but if making it gaming capable is going to add a significant amount to the cost I could just leave it. My main gaming is console based and if I want to actually get into PC gaming I'll make a desktop. I would like to do some things like play the original Half-Life, for example. Rust sounds cool. I like Roller Coaster Tycoon. Stuff like that. I think most of the games I would be interested in are pretty un-demanding.
Whatever else you find relevant: I don't need a touch screen. If I could hook it up to a TV that would be a big plus. Most of all I want FAST for the main functions I listed. Gotta go fast. I want it to be like a sports car with the seats taken out (and if the seats are its gaming capability then so be it).
I think that's it? I'd really appreciate any advice about what I should be looking at and what the pros and cons of different options might be. Thanks a lot.
If you can afford the 970M SKU, take it for longevity.Last question!
So I'm still kind of searching but to echo an above poster, which card would be good at running XCOM 2/ Civ VI, and games of that sort? I'm looking at a 965M in the MSI GE72-027 or possibly an MSI GE72-077 that has a 970M and a 128GB SSD. I'm thinking the 965M should be able to run lots of newer games either at medium or high, right?
I also kicked th dirt on that new Gigabyte P55W-BW1, but there seems to be temp and fan noise issues there.
I got my Sager NP9377 S for almost $3000.00 with dual cards and it's an absolute beast. If money is not an issue and wants a beastly gaming laptop, dual cards is the way to go.
Heck, if he is getting a king of laptops, the MSI GT80 or the Sager NP9377 offer upgrades on the new GPU so when Pascal is available and it's compatible to the current rigs, the guy who has no money issue can get two new Pascal GPUs and take it from there. I'm just basing this on Stinkle's neighbor if money is not an issue.
How hot is the CPU?Finally got the NP8652 up and running with stuff still coming in the mail for it. I find that the cooling for the GPU is phenomenal so far whereas I'm going to have to go in and redo the paste on the CPU. I've already managed to throttle it while rendering though I guess the single fan on is still a single fan.
"Cheap is the goal" is not a budget

Requirements
Budget: Around $850
Display: 1080p or higher - IPS or similar tech
Processor: High end i5 or i7
Ram: 8-16gb
I'd like an SSD, but I can always put in one myself.
I really do not care about the size.
Hey I'm looking for a laptop to use at work while I'm sitting around doing nothing. I'm looking to use it mostly to create video game art and assests, so I'll be using Photoshop, 3d applications, Unreal Engine 4, etc, some prettty demanding Software. Some of the applications I use take advantage of CUDA, so I'll need a Nvidia GPU for that. I don't really care about gaming or high FPS, as long as the performance is usable
I'm currently considering the 15in ASUS N550JK-DS71T for $800
- 2.5 GHz Core i7-4700HQ
- 1080p IPS
- 8 GB DDR3
- NVIDIA GTX850M
- 1 TB SSD
But I'm not finding many options for light gaming laptops with an IPS display at that price point, are there any more options?
Okay, ideally sub $500 but I could go higher if I would gain a whole lot for a couple/few hundred extra. Sorry. I'll edit my post
I'm so out of the loop. What's so good about the upcoming pascal machines?
I have one too, it's the best gaming laptop there is, right now.Bought myself one of these last month. It's absolutely superb.

I'm currently looking at these two laptops now:
ASUS K501LX-EB71 15.6-Inch FHD Laptop
and
Lenovo Y50-70 Laptop Computer - 59440656
The prices after taxes/shipping would be around $850 for the ASUS and $930 for the Lenovo. The price points aren't too different since the Lenovo wouldn't require taxes (third party seller fullfilled by Amazon) afaik.
I'm conflicted about these two laptops because they both have things I like about them. The Lenovo is more powerful with a better processor (although I don't know how much more powerful it really is) and graphics card, but it's also a bit heavier and looks more bulky to me. The Lenovo also has a better display (IPS) than the ASUS (TN), but I honestly don't know how they would compare in person. Would the display differences really be that noticeable? I like how both laptops look which is embarassingly pretty important to me, lol.
I don't really plan on gaming *that* much on the laptop because I already have a pretty good gaming desktop, but it'd be nice to be able to play a game or two on medium/high settings while I'm traveling. From what I can tell, the ASUS will run cooler, but not perform as well.
EDIT: Oh and also, the ASUS has a SSD drive and another slot for more storage space which I really like.
Anyone have any advice between those two laptops? Thanks![]()
If I had a gaming desktop, I'd take the Asus.
Got an aorus x5 waiting for me at home, giving up first gen retina macbook pro for it. Mac is still humming along but the screengate issue had me worried a bit.
2880x1800 Ips Gsync allegedly, sli 965m, 8gb vram (though thinking about it now this should be 4gb effective due to Sli). No clue what to expect from laptop Gsync or Gsync in general.
Everything is an upgrade except maybe size and battery life, but it will be nice to jump back into gaming again.
That's what i was leaning toward. My only real concern would be the display. I don't really know if I'd mind the TN display that much or if I'd even notice it being an issue. The IPS definitely would have better viewing angles, though. Wonder if any store would have these in them so I could compare them directly in person, lol.

Re-did the paste on the 4720HQ with AS5 just earlier and it's idling/web browsing around 41c now with the lowest core temp being 36c. Would never imagine going under 45c with whatever came from the factory so success! \o/
Though I wish there were room to do double fans for the CPU as well because that would've been nice. As long as I'm not maxing out I suppose.
