Cool. Glad to finally know when it's coming. Hopefully Square lowers the msrp by 20 dollars for the PS4 release. Anything over 39.99 isn't getting bought.

Well when is Uncharted 4 coming to X1. Plenty of games to play. End of 2016 when all the bugs are gone works for me!

What else would it be ???

If X1 stays at 900p then PS4 will normally be 1080p

If both are 1080p and there are slowdowns on X1, there will be less on PS4.

Otherwise I don´t know what else they could deliver.

Tomb Raider is 1080 on XB1, so maybe increased framerate for PS4. Who knows.

will it even take that full year for Square-Enix to mention the lackluster sales as why there won't be a sequel to Rise of the Tomb Raider?

I think that depends on definition of a bomb - PS4 version of PVZ:GW was given away on PSN, so inevitably that would ruin the retail chances it had (the fact that game is basically a F2P that they charge for on other platforms(not unlike the original PvZ) is just an insult to the people that did buy it - but I guess that's just how EA rolls).

It was given away because it sold like shit and PVZ:GW wasn't basically a F2P game either.

This thread seems to have many branches :)
But, furthering discussion with unavailable data is not exactly the same as furthering it with opinions.

Well we are speculating with data the we (don't) have. And your pointless post just created another branching discussion. =)

I think in a case like this where the amount of information is scarce and what is available is nebulous we can be more broad.

So do these The Know guys earn back some credibility now for that silent hills rumor (seem accurate on this and dark souls 3)? heh

said q4 2016/nov release, price point $40. although they were wrong about when the release window would get announced.
Frankly, this almost seems like a lucky guess.

It's going to take more than that to make up for the 'Silent Hills bought for BILLIONS' rumor.

Better graphical effects (shadows, AA...)? Though they can't really advertise these things without downplaying XBO version (MS won't allow it).

Nice to see a win10 version. First big profile game coming to the store. Hope it has cross buy so they set an example to other publishers.

lol

The amount of money MS would need to give Square for that...

I think they paid more than enough for this exclusivity window, and most likely it will not perform as well as they hoped.

I'm really curious how a game that has a current-gen version that's already a year old will be selling on the ps4. Wonder how many people are gonna shell out $60 (let's face it, this is square so that's what it's going to be, the remaster was $60 too IIRC) for a game that can be gotten for $10-30 on another current gen console/pc at the time.

I do still think there's a good chance the exclusivity deal was probably for something around 6 months, but Uncharted 4 being delayed into spring messed things up big time for them and caused them to push the game back even more.

Didn't Kagari said Square wasn't happy with Uncharted 4's delay? That probably three off Square's plan and were indeed planning to launch the PS4 version and PC in early 2016 together but now with U4 an early 2016 title they decided to launch it later as to not compete with Sony's massive exclusive.

At least that's my theory.
I'm not sure about that. They probably would have sold more launching against Uncharted 4 than they will in Holiday 2016. Competing against one game while still riding off of the previous marketing push by MS a few months earlier is a better scenario than releasing a year later forgotten among the yearly mega franchises and your own AAA JRPG releases.

And I'm really curious as to what Square-Enix's plans for this franchise are. They've been building it up to be a massive multiplatform franchise, releasing the reboot on practically every system to generate mindshare, only to cut its legs off and set back its growth tremendously on PS4, and as a result of how the install base is worldwide, set back the franchise's growth in certain territories. They must really have no confidence in this title.

Good luck trying to flog this at any sort of full price since by this point it will be in the Steam Sale window, and also be heavily reduced on Xbox shelves. Oh and going up against Uncharted 4 of course.

I mean really, best of luck. Taking that money was a huge ass mistake.

So this means they'll tell us any day now how long the delay is for FFVII remake on Xbox One right?

Right?

Edit: Replaced "remaster" with "remake" for reasons.

Was always going to be a bargain bin release for me anyway, but i'm glad it's coming for the people that still wanted it.

A fucking Xbox 360 version of the game is a disgrace though, cross-gen should have been dead for a while now.

I am fine with this wait. I enjoyed TR13 a lot, so look forward to the ps4 version eventually.

Still, I doubt this scenario is optimal for Square and the series. I doubt this is a true X-one system seller for the masses, especially now that the PC and PS4 versions are a given. And I would not be surprised if PS4 sales are hurt because it releases a whole year after. For this to really work in terms of sales the game needs to be an almost classic-tier title.

I also kind of expect a GOTY/directors cut to come for the PS4 now (alongside a rerelease for the One and PC probably), because they surely want to push the game again by that time. And Square loves to do that stuff.

I'd wager it was a substantial amount for 12 month exclusivity. I'll still but it next year, no problem.

Wasn't expecting that amount of transparency

i don't remember excusivety being as agregious last gen as it is this gen, but again I've only been on Gaf since November of last year, were people as annoyed by it back then here?

That's a good point. Or they are confident or MS really broke the bank to secure this exclusivity period.

I think anything less than the money MS paid to Rockstar last gen is not worth it. And I'm not even talking about lost ps4 sales, but about the ip mindshare gains/setback.

Do we have any case of a game that was multiplatform, went exclusive and then multi again to try to see what can happen in a case like this?

I never expected to hear about the PS4 version before the Xbox ones released.

I think Square made this deal way before the PS4's runaway success. Seeing how they're now shunning the largest installed base (not to mention how historically more fans were on Playstation anyway) must've hurt and had to scramble to make this announcement earlier than expected and without pissing Microsoft off.

But, furthering discussion with unavailable data is not exactly the same as furthering it with opinions.

LOL

How is this:

I am sure Square Enix has more MBA's on the payroll than the "armchair" ones on gaming forums.

furthering discussion with opinion any more than what you replied to:

I hope MS is paying big, staggering front loaded releases is dangerous. If the hype dies down, all late version will sell like crap.

I didn't like the last TR, so I'm not really going to look closely at this one until the bargain bin.

You're using unavailable data to not even further discussion but to stop it dead. It's not the first time you've done this either, in another thread about a month ago you said something like "I'm sure MS has more MBAs than GAF they know exactly what they're doing" before I had to remind you that a probable writedown on the Nokia acquisition was likely coming (before it was announced). Lo and behold a $2.1Billion loss this quarter from it.

I can certainly see it being the wrong call in the end. I honestly don't feel comfortable assessing how the PS4 version will do or whether or not the money was worth it. I think a lot of it is going to have to do with questions like:

1.) Will it release full price?
2.) Will it have compelling "Game of the Year" or "Complete Edition" content?
3.) How well reviewed will it be?

If it's a year late $60 port of the game as it existed on the Xbox One a year previous with little to no technical improvement from the added PS4 horsepower, and was an ~80 score on Metacritic anyway, then yeah this thing is going to be a disaster. But let's say it's $40, or there's noticeable upgrades and has significant new (even if not exclusive) content, and it's a critical darling? If you didn't already buy the Xbox One or PC version in the interim (in which case Square Enix already got your money and nothing was lost for them), I think this could still be a successful title next year. I don't expect it to compete with whatever the 2016 holiday lineup is, but I think it could be above "BOMBA" territory.

But yes, I could easily see this backfiring for them and hurting PS4 sales to such a degree that the MS deal no longer makes sense.

You bring up a very important point, I think, that hasn't been mentioned enough:

This will ride a lot on how well the game is received later this year.

"Remake", "remaster"... Whatever they're calling it.
I'm pretty sure you know what I meant.
Remaster and Remake are two vastly different things, man. They're not polishing the polygons and backgrounds to make them look good in HD and widescreen. They're building FFVII from the ground up to make it look closer to FFXV.

It's a remake and it's a big deal.
