Fighting Games Weekly | July 20-26 | No Gods or Kings, Only Tears

I got to play so many matches of SFV ahhhhh yas.

I'm already way more interested in this than SF4. Everyone having their own unique V-Skill and V-Triggers is a huge difference. Knowing matchups is going to be even more important than before; if you don't know what is going on when someone pops their V-Trigger and they are any good you're going to get the business.

Less satisfied than I wanted with Bison after getting my hands on him. I don't know how well I'm going to adjust to his walk speed. It is Makoto-tier shit. That and losing s.HK has my fingers very confused in the neutral game so far. I'm used to Bison being pretty solid in the footsie game and it feels like he lost a lot of ground there. His corner pressure seems wicked though, and his V-Trigger is out of control. No-charge cancelable EX specials is fuckin' scary, you really can't get clipped with scissors while he's got V-Trigger up.

I haven't watched that yet. I just remember combofiend saying ex version was the only one that could be used as an AA.
Could be just a good hitbox, pretty sure I stuffed it on Nash's wake up with a meety crouching HK, unless he tried to wake up with EX sonic boom.

V-Trigger having so many more uses than the Revenge meter makes a big difference. At least mentally I've been forgetting to check it more often than I would the Revenge meter, even though I did only maybe one V-Reversal.

Yeah, there were definitely rounds where I basically forgot to use my V-Trigger at all. Not used to managing that resource yet, and I was so enamored with Bison's V-Trigger I don't think I used a V-Reversal once.

Art got ECT because Sp00ky is busy and he's a proven streamer who streams streams at the highest quality and doesn't have weird colors or contrast problems. Plus its Art. He's like the big goofy brother everybody never had.

Let me explain it better. Spooky was at ECT. He did not want to stream because of what happened last year. Art was only picked because LIJoe felt that Art would help them get a pot bonus which he did not. At the end of the day it was a failure on all parts.

Playing Ryu makes me realize how much I despise playing as Ryu. But I'd rather still play as Ryu than any of these other characters.

Just give me Cammy already :(

Of the three characters, Nash seems to be the most fun. Love teleporting into a punish or a combo.

Chun is fair enough.

Bison, seems good but that walk speed just makes him a character that isn't enjoyable. I think he could be strong, but it would take a lot of work.

A solid start for the cast.

Crush Counters are hard to anticipate, at least right now. I feel like people will catch on to these situations and have the right normals ready to input in sequence but I don't think there's a way for Ryu to do anything right now after Crush Counter? Maybe super?

Yeah I heard one of ryus crush counters doesn't work like every other one and gives a knockdown or something...maybe st.hp?

But his other crush counter st.hk you can follow-up after. Desk did a vid with some examples

I kinda hope crush counters wind up giving you a bit more time to confirm. After a focus crumple you had 2 weeks to confirm and set shit up.

Bison has a lot of ways around his walk speed though. He's already a monster, IMO.

Being able to cancel specials into EX specials without needing to charge during V-Trigger is insane as well.

Our very own toddhunter got quoted by ScrubQuotes today

I hate this fucking mentality its stupid as fuck. Let people play with the character they like who cares if they are popular and you see alot of them that just gives you more match up experience. I've been playing Ryu and Scorpion since the SNES era and I'm supposed to switch it up because you play alot of them? Go fuck yourself.

Anyone know if Ryu can juggle off an anti-air CC s.HK? It looks like it sends them into a state where you could. Didn't really get enough opportunities to test it out last night.. once things were going I hardly had time in training mode.

I understand what you are saying and makes sense, a very reasonable sensable opinion.

Despite that every time I see someone play as mario online in mario kart, it makes me upset. " you got all these mario characters you don't get to play as normally ,and you picked mario?"

I know I am wrong, and I'm not some looser telling folk to commit suicide. But this in specifically mario kart makes me upset for some dumb reason.

Does he have two?

This.

yeah, the other dude being able to dash in and throw him in time is bs.

That's how it worked in 3s, though? On long parries for projectiles, anyway. It was one of the best uses of projectiles. It's why Akuma's air fireball was good.

Dude shouldn't have tried styling with parries so close up and just blocked and punished.

I think it's good that Ryu's parry has recovery.

Indeed. Means no stupid shit like parrying a c.lp and getting 50% combos off of it.

Ogawa is a Zato god, but I don't think you can hand out a title like "god" to someone on a game's first Evo. Marvel gods all died, Leffen and Mang0 died in Melee, and Infiltration died. That's significant turnover in the three major legacy titles. The title feels appropriate within that context.

You can easily call Armada a god of the game, IMO. You brought Leffen up us having died, but he only recently rose to the level of the rest. He's the newest inductee into the Big 5 (now 6). Armada was there already beforehand. Has been for ages.

Ogawa is a GG god in general, but you usually don't talk about "gods" at a game's first Evo. It's a legacy title that gets built over a few years of participation.

That EVO focus can go jump in a lake. Melee has had its big tournaments for ages, and that's where its own group of dominant players got established as being above the rest. Not EVO.

Infiltration's dominance in 2012 wasn't the EVO win only - it was that practically every tournament in 2012 was a fight for second place.

One win means a lot, but not everything. Consistent performance goes. And the top GG players at Mikado and the pantheon of Melee have performed consistently for years. Leffen was inducted only recently when he started to be able to challenge the gods. Hasn't been the case always. It's a relatively new thing for him to be this damn good.

The "god" title also means that you are so far above the competition that you are nigh untouchable. ChrisG, FChamp, and JWong were so far above the rest of the Marvel competition that they made it look like a different game. Ditto for Infiltration and the 20XX Melee players. The point of the title isn't that no one is amazing at the game now, but that competition has ramped up to such a degree that there are no clear "gods" in the games anymore. Who the hell would have thought we would have Hungrybox in Melee grand finals? He took down Leffen AND Mang0.

HBox has been part of the untouchable group for a long time. Didn't think he'd win, he's been on the lower end of the "pantheon" for a long time, but I'll be damned if you can find a player outside the rest of the top6 (Mang0, Armada, M2K, PPMD, HBox, Leffen) who can consistently beat him. Hint: You probably won't, and that's been the case for a long time.

Guess what tournament was last week?

So you're going to ignore the entire history of the Guilty Gear series because... reasons?

People calling Ogawa a GG god is not a new development.
The thread title is about legacy games at Evo. Did you even read my series of posts, or are you just chiming in because the topic got brought up again?

Who knows if Xrd will even be at Evo next year.
