Dragon Quest 11 Announced! [PS4/3DS (simultaneous), NX (tentative)]

I had a feeling it'd be PS4/3DS. The NX thing is huge though... if it actually happens. Right now though I'm more concerned with whether it'll actually get localised, the platforms aren't a huge deal to me. Although... at least it's not an iOS game.

I see a lot of people complaining about the looks of the main character. I really like it, it's way different than usual, he looks more serious and mature than the Goku looking ones.

Wouldn't the NX announcement confirm that the NX is a Console? I mean if it was a Handheld I don't see the point of releasing the game on 3DS and release it again on the next gen "Handheld" by Nintendo.

Can't call it a confirmation yet but this does make it extremely likely that the NX they are potentially developing for is a console.

I don't think they would want to compete with the 3DS's install base with a later portable release and they must be confident enough in the NX to skip the Wii U.

The NX is off to a good start.

Well now we have to suffer through localisation concern trolling or whatever you want to call it until they confirm it's being localised.

I mean, I can understand people feeling burnt after DQ7 but at the very least the PS4 version is obviously coming to the west yet we're going to hear the same thing until confirmation.
At least that's more realistic than people sticking their heads in the sand about where this game was going primarily. I mean sure the 3DS version (or... part of it!?) will probably land on mobile whenever, but that's distinct from being mobile native and blowing off consoles like BoFVI.

... And I am paranoid about the 3DS one. I just hope we get news in the next few months about the 3DS ports to calm that down. At least for me, others will still scream the sky is falling until it's out.

So adding the up on the list Square-Enix has the following titles coming to PS4:

Star Ocean 5
Dragon Quest XI
Final Fantasy XV
Dragon Quest X
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Dragon Quest Heroes
Dragon Quest Builders
World of Final Fantasy
Kingdom Hearts 3
Nier 2
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Dragon Quest Heroes 2
Final Fantasy 7 (PC Port)
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Project Setsuna
Hitman
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Just Cause 3
Final Fantasy XIV Updates (An unidentified amount of content will continue to make it's way to the game).

I got to say I'm very impressed with the output they have coming to the PS4 so far.

I am so ready for most of those.

Really, really looking forward to playing DQXI.

I'm not complaining, at least not until I see party members, but I like the non-DBZ hero styles better. By non-DBZ, I mean stuff like DQVII where at least the hero didn't look like he was about to go SSJ.

Of course Toriyama has his style but between the Joker 3 design, his absence at the event and this, he does come across as very hands off when it comes to DQ.

Edit because I feel the need to insist: I don't think it's a bad design at all, just a bit uninspired.

i dont mind the design at all. I like the design. Just the coloring seems a bit ... off. Dunno about light purple coat and snot green boots.

Could go with a color palette change. Other then that, the design is fine. It fits the narrative as " this is the sequel to DQVIII I've always wanted " to have a lead character look like the dudes brother or cousin or something lol

One thing that needs to happen though.

Somehow SE needs to get with Bandai Namco and make a Dragonball JRPG with of course Toriyama doing the artwork. I mean ... come on. DQ feels so much like a Dragonball RPG anyway, just throw in the real characters and world! Could be turn based where you charge up Ki to various levels to send out generic blast ki or transform during battle into SSJ with enough Ki charged or stuff like that. Massive environment destroying blasts and combat ensues in ATB fashion. Could work!

Are you really adding two years and trying to make it impressive, if you own two consoles?

Huh i am just comparing home console's output and most of the upcoming games will be released in 05/06 too. The initial years of last gen RPG output is definitely good but every thing slowed down after that two years :(

Let's hope this gen is sustainable.

So... now... don't get disappointed...

But I've never really played a Dragon Quest game except for one on PS2. But I was young and don't remember anything except for the fact I thought it was a Dragonball Z RPG.

Can I just play the new one (if it actually ends up being playable one day in Engrish) without having played the older ones?

Yes. As far as continuity in DQ games goes, DQ1-3 are part of a trilogy, and DQ4-6 a second trilogy. Otherwise, they're like FF in that the tropes and monsters and spells carry across games, but the story and characters are unique to each title.

The games on the glorious PS4 list alone would make the entire gen worth it, anything beyond that is gravy.

So we got

Star Ocean 5
Dragon Quest XI
Final Fantasy XV
Dragon Quest X
Dissidia Arcade ( running on PS4 hardware .... )
Dragon Quest Heroes
Dragon Quest Builders
World of Final Fantasy
Kingdom Hearts 3
Nier 2

All from direct from SE or through some sort of collaboration. Missing anything? Hell of a lineup.
We're going back to PS2 level zsupport here for the PS4 when it comes to JRPG's. Feels good to see a focused effort for the right Japanese console of choice for RPG's. Bow to get a PS4 back at some point in the next 2 years.

It really does look like a full sequel to VIII; consider me interested!

To paraphrase Jack Valance, "Confidence is very hopefull...dont you think?"

I have to say, the use of the second screen is actually really clever.

But goddamn, finally, DQ is out of the gaming ghetto. Been 10 long-ass years.

I believe so too (although some of them are crossgen) , i still have not regretted buying my 360 because those exclusive JRPG that Microsoft offered at the start of last gen but i still hope that developers can continue to sustain their output this gen.

Surprised there are so many antifans of Trunks here. -mypeople-

Game looked gorgeous from the stream, hope it turns out well and get localized in a timely manner. Very much wanna play it. The NX bomb though, did not see that coming. Nintendo is making a surprising move?

Do people want a customizable avatar again?

I do.

The problem with full customization is now you have no main character. Imagine if FF did this, every character is so iconic, you would never be able to go back and represent the FF16 character (for example) because his/her likeness is like Rorshach - it's everything and anything.

And by extension, nothing.

Customization is cool, but you're sacrificing a powerful narrative tool by doing so. I'd be happy with armor and weapons changing how our protagonist works, not changing the protagonist himself.

Has Nintendo really inspired that much confidence in you?

If you like a company, say Nintendo, and you have the guarantee that there will be a game you really, really want, say Dragon Quest XI, will come to that system then why not?

We buy games before we play them because we trust the devs. We may as well buy consoles because we trust the manufacturer.

Also, there's a sense of belonging with DQ and Nintendo

Just use the default design.

Mass Effect, Recent Fire Emblems and such have done so.

That being said...not every game needs customization for their main leads (no matter how much I love it).

Also being said...the DQ protags have generally been mute plain avatars ,no?

Narrative tool? I am not sure I understand this. Every single protagonist in entire Dragon Quest games dating back to the very first one was a silent protagonist. As in their personality was a blank slate and entirely on the basis of their facial emotions and reactions. There was no dialog to support a specific identity to associate with them. Having a unique design is one thing, but it definitely wasn't for the sake of narration.

The first two years for both are in the meh to ok output. Overall last gen was barren and a shitshow, SE's entire lineup alone of what's been announced is better than all jRPGs put together from every studio last gen.
