Upgrade to Windows 10?

FYI Windows asks for the product key when you boot from USB. I was able to find mine using some sketchy software called Magic Jelly Bean. I wasn't too worried because I'm completely wiping everything and starting fresh.

Ok now I feel like microsoft actually shat me in the face.

Upgraded to win 10 (was activated and all)
Did a fresh install, now it wont activate.

Got tired waiting for windows update, so I used that MS tool to upgrade my Win7 x64 Pro installation and it worked fine! Downloaded and installed everything without problems, took some time and 3 or 4 reboots.

Was scared at one point because a black screen was staying there for some time, until I understood that Windows install is using my TV as a primary monitor, keeping my main monitor dark, so I pulled the PC to TV HDMI cable out and progress circle popped into the right screen. :)

Love the dark theme, easy on eyes, just how I like it. :)

Did the force update trick, and man MS servers are fast; downloaded 5.4 gigs in less than 5 min. Pretty impressive considering the massive load they must be under ATM.

so using the iso for a clean install is best?

does it automatically delete everything beforehand or do i need to do it manually?

I would assume you do a reformat before install like before.

I need to keep my schoolwork and this computer wasn't partitioned when I bought it so I'll just do the update - whenever I can do that now, I'm afraid I restarted my computer yesterday while the files were being downloaded and I don't know if it got resumed or not - It didn't really show you it was downloading so I would assume there shouldn't be a problem or they would've warned me but I haven't gotten any prompt today to install W10? Common?

Edit:
Ah, W10 in update history in Windows Update said it failed, I did the trick and we'll see!

is windows activated after using that tool?

sound is completely fucked in most games
restored to Windows 8.1 till everything isnt fucked
DMC4SE was completely silent when streamed to my TV in 10

Fully upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro.

Then I proceeded to do clean fresh reinstall, Windows 10 setup says my key is invalid.
/confused.

I am liking Windows 10 but also didn't have any issues with 8. Didn't see what all the fuss was about. Don't like tiles..... Don't use tiles, that wasn't hard.

I am though having trouble on Parallels, the performance in a VM is wonky at best, 8 is buttery smooth. Not a Windows issue, likely just need to upgrade parallels, just odd that it's visual performance is struggling so much when it doesn't differ to much from 8.

Good luck with Parallels. It wouldn't surprise me if they wait and just force you to pay for the next upgrade. That's the way it happens with Mac OS X when it comes to major OS upgrades. It sucks...

I'm digging Windows 10 Pro so far, really like how clean everything is. The Xbox app is nice and works well, going to do testing of all my installed games and programs all day tomorrow to see whats compatible and all that. Then give it a few days to make sure nothing catches on fire then I'll wipe the Windows 8.1 files that are taking up 30gb on my harddrive.

Really impressed, it feels like a lot more solid of a product day 1 than 7 or 8 did when I had those. Everything feels logically laid out and I'm actually excited to use some of the Windows features that I ignored on 8.1.

Ah cheers, what's the difference between this and the standard update app?

Also this install won't delete all my data right? I'd rather not do a complete clean install.

They're basically the same from what I gather.

I'd backup what's important (doc's, pictures, music etc...) Games and apps can also be re-downloaded if need be. Always have your pc/laptop original drivers on hand, most manufactures have them on their website.

You shouldn't lose anything if the installation goes well.

Presumably "apps" only includes the metro apps, which would make sense as they're being replaced in Windows 10.

Personal files should be everything else right?

It is saying it's not letting me keep my windows settings, programs, etc... cause I have a different language installed. My Windows 8.1 is in french and the installer seems ot be in french too.

Oh well, I'm going to YOLO that thing!

I reserved Win10. I'd rather do a clean install with an iso than do an upgrade. Do we get a product key so we can activate now and in the future?

After reading all the issues that people are having im very glad I bought a new HDD

I will keep my old HDD with my Win7 on it, and just do a fresh install of Win10 on my new one

Seems like the best solution

So I'm done upgrading and I chose to keep nothing of my files thinking this would mean a clean install, however I've ended up with a folder Windows.old. Does this mean no clean install?

Cool stuff, eh? Now that would be too much work for them to actually TELL how all this supposed to function prior to Win10 release instead of letting us find it out for ourselves, I suppose.

Don't delete the BT folder

Delete everything in "C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload"

Then run a command prompt as admin, and type in wuauclt.exe /updatenow

Give it a minute. You can watch update start to put stuff in the folder you previously emptied. Then it will start downloading windows 10.

Thanks - worked on my surface pro 3, I now have the ~BT folder.

I am going to run the installation as an upgrade rather than fresh install. Does anyone know if the folder/sub folders C:\users\MYNAME\AppData will be left intact as several of my games put their saves and configs into this area.

Just hit skip whenever it asks for a key. It will activate automatically when you get to the desktop.

That's how it worked for me.

Still having trouble with this:

No matter what I do, NVidia drivers will not detect my GTX 460. To add more salt to the wound, when I reinstalled the drivers, the displays for the 460 flashed for a second and then went right back to not working.

wont that mean you need to buy win10? I'm just making backups of my computers and doing an in place update, then a fresh install, the clone to a new SSD. Can always restore back to the backup if needed.

Windows 10 setup is failing on my tablet. Can't seem to skip updates - no option. Checks for updates initially, and again after accepting the T&Cs, starts to install and then quits out at 41% with 'something happened' and 'Windows 10 installation has failed'

Wow! I just finished installing Win10 on my laptop to test it out. Loving what I am seeing! Probably going to prepare my desktop for the upgrade!

So, actually I'm on Windows 8.1. Do I need to update and then do a clean install to get my Windows 10 Key, or can I directly do a clean install by using the Media Creation Tool ?
