Upgrade to Windows 10?

How do I do a reset after I upgrade?

edit: I see it now. If I wipe everything, how do I set it to not touch my storage hard drive? I only want it to wipe the C drive but it doesn't seem to tell you.

Let me get this straight. In order to do a clean install:

1. Upgrade Win 7 --> Win 10
2. Download Win10.iso
3. Install normally using the .iso, activation will happen automatically

Correct?

There is an option to reset the system in win 10. This erases the current win 10 and installs it clean, new and fresh...

And yes you should 100 % upgrade before trying to install a fresh win 10.

From the Insider 10240 build to a clean install made from a USB, things went fairly smooth tonight except for:

  1. The "Reset" option in 10 actually resulted in multiple boot-loops into BSOD's.
  2. I had to tell the BIOS to boot from a USB, where I FORTUNATELY had already put the Windows 10 64-bit ISO on prior to even trying anything. If you want to make your own ISO, do so here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10 (You may think you don't need it, but trust me, you might end up in my situation... keep reading)
  3. Went through the setup process with that. Hit a snag where it wouldn't let me install to my SSD where my old install was. Here is precisely what it told me and I followed the top rated suggestion to fix it: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers...-mbr-partition-table-efi-systems-windows.html
It was in 3 separate partions for some reason. I had to delete each partition on my designated drive and then it let me proceed with the install.
  4. It asked me to confirm my settings twice during setup for some reason. Not sure why...
  5. Finally finished. Updates finally installed, except...
  6. The Nvidia driver said it failed but the Device Manager showed the latest driver. I had to manually download it from guru3d since they weren't on Nvidia's site yet, and install from there. It was fine after I did that and finally gave me back the Nvidia control panel afterwards.
  7. Got some old programs reinstalled. All were fine. Reinstalled some of my most used Metro-style apps from 8.1, all were fine and actually remembered my settings/logins where appropriate.

That'll save a couple of minutes. Thanks!

I'm sad. Thus far it seems as though Cortana has ZERO responses about Doctor Halsey. Kind of disappointing. It should be who she says if you ask her who her mother is.

Yeah, imagine my reaction when I stepped away for a few minutes and came back to a BSOD, something I hadn't seen in ages. It started fine and bam... BSOD into reboot, rinse and repeat.

Now, keep in mind that I haven't had a clean Windows installation since before 7. I went from 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 (Insider build 10166 then to build 10240), all upgrades. I was long overdue for a clean install.

Your situation may be different but don't risk it. Have that DVD or USB stick backup ready to go just in case.

Zero problems upgrading. Got the update message, went through the download and installation and was ready to go. Very nice.

damn, post was removed.

i already cleared the softwaredistribution/download folder, was there something else i missed?

"What this error means is, your Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted. Now, how do you fix that?
1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch, hopefully without flaws this time."

How does the upgrade work with the windows 8 key?

If you ever want to reinstall Windows 10, you have to install Windows 8.1 and upgrade again? >.<

yeah, that doesn't do anything for me unfortunately.

my windows 10 never even started downloading, just noticed the failed entry in my updates history.

gosh... what in the hell is so fubared here

also, my "get windows 10" icon appeared again, after it had disappeared for a few hours - SO CONFUSED

i can see "upgrade to windows 10 home" under my update history, as "failed".

wtf - any way i can try again?

:/
That's not really a failure, it means you have predownloaded the installer and are fully ready for the upgrade but Microsoft hasn't flagged your computer for the update yet. You'll get another failure every time you do a Windows Update until it starts the download.

It worked for me, even though I haven't got a confirmation that I can upgrade yet. It forced it to start. Strange :o

well, Things did not go as smooth as they should over here.
I had an existing install of win 7 pro. (After having to reinstall it to get the win 10 upgrade button)
Naturally the update downloaded (checked the hidden Folder) but after waiting some time this morning It didnt say anything about being ready to upgrade.
Then I downloaded that tool from Microsoft to get stuff done, did the upgrade. After the upgrade my pc sat at a black Screen that only showed the mouse. It sat at that Screen for too long, like half an hour.
Restarted the pc, Windows restored itself to win 7 which was better than expected.
Then unplugging one of my two Monitors and disabling the integrated gpu I went for the update again (I also uninstalled nvidia Software to be sure)
Which worked. However this install is Kind of janky and feels more like running from an hdd than an ssd which it is installed on.
Now Im creating an USB installer to go for a clean install since this is what I wanted to do anyway. Well nice Thing to do in the morning huh.

Also how do i turn off autocorrect on win 10? It doesnt even work properly, Im correcting the shit out of it all the time.

Updated, no problems, just took a long ass time.

Oblivion seems wonky, but the rest of my games work fine still, and Oblivion was already wonky on Win7 so no change there.

Also, Wii U Pro controller still works, and is still recognized as XInput. Take that, DS4.

Should I reinstall my GTX 970's disc-based drivers? It's not being recognized in device manager.

EDIT:
Okay, yeah, gotta download the W10 drivers manually for it.

Stupid question time, not had time to read everything, if I'm understanding right

You swap your 7 key for windows 10 right?? So if say I decided in 6 months I wanted to go back to windows 7 I can't because the keys upgraded to a 10 key now , with Microsoft is that correct?

should i try deleting my windows BT folder, or should i just leave this all alone and wait longer... ?

Don't delete the BT folder

Delete everything in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download"

Then run a command prompt as admin, and type in wuauclt.exe /updatenow

Give it a minute. You can watch update start to put stuff in the folder you previously emptied. Then it will start downloading windows 10.

You know, strange thing is, I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and it never asked me for a key.

It didn't here eitther which is why I asked the question.

I also downloaded Windows 10 to an USB to install from in the future and I'm pretty sure that installation will ask for a key.

yeah, did all that - it's put two files back into that folder [totalling about 100kb combined], and that's about it

my free space on my C:\ drive DID just go down by ~4 gigs though... hrmmm

Update will pre-allocate what it needs. Just give it a minute. It doesn't kick in instantly.

After reading the Microsoft FAQ about the upgrade I think ist like this:

You do the upgrade, get a win 10 license. However if you reinstall Windows 10 you do not Need (or it is not possible) to use your key for authentification.
Your Windows 10 license is tied to your Hardware. So if you reinstall (10), it recognises your Hardware and checks online whether this Hardware has a win 10 license.
Sadly I did not find any Information about what happens if you reinstall win 7 and try to activate it with your key :(

I have an OEM Windows 7 drive that can no longer boot normally for reasons I don't know of, especially since it wasn't my computer. It boots only in safe mode. Would it be a good idea to upgrade to 10 or should I try to fix my booting issue and keep 7?

Planning on upgrading my lappy to 10 (ftom 8.1) tonight after work.

Will i need to find new drivers for everything (wireless, bluetooth, gtaphics card, chipset etc)?

My god this thing is so sweet on my surface 3.

It is the best OS I've ever used and thats in two hours

Hope it holds up as well when I get it on my desktop

Has anyone noticed how useless the xbox app is? It doesn't recognize any of my steam games. Out of my non steam games it only recognized SWTOR.

I need help GAF,

Currently looking through my root directory looking for $Windows.~BT, however instead I found $Windows.~WS instead. I was wondering if these two were the same things, and should I delete them and redo the update?

This is pissing me off. I downloaded the drivers, ran it and it says the Hardware Wizard is open and needs to be closed to do anything. But the Hardware Wizard IS closed. Or am I missing something?

Can anyone help me out here?

EDIT: There it goes. SHEESH.
