Upgrade to Windows 10?

My win 8.1 install crapped out and couldn't be recovered a couple of weeks ago. I installed the Win 10 tech preview instead of reinstalling 8 and trying to do an upgrade. Is there anything I need to do regarding upgrading my Win 8 license? I tried changing the product key to my Win 8 key but that didn't work.

Simply not working for me. Don't even have the app in the corner

And I have a Surface pro 3, less than a year old. Running Windows 8.1

I tried running all the command prompts MS has on their website to help, installed every update available,

nothing

have no idea what the deal is - I don't have the little windows 10 app in the right corner either.

Im downloading it with the installation tool provided in their website. Installing it on my USB.

I have the reservation icon but still doesnt let me download from there yet. With the method Im using will the upgrade work?

I got the crumple paper sfx still.

Nvm it was the new theme that doesn't have it.

Is anyone able to install their own drivers in the device manager? Everything is greyed out for me, I wanted to update my XB270HU drivers seeing as it is detected as generic display, same for my samsung TV.

Gotta recalibrate the colors too.

Windows Update seems to be stuck on "preparing for installation" for me. The green bar won't move any further. Do I just keep waiting?

I got tired of fucking with it last night and used the upgrade tool. Besides the nvidia driver issue it worked great.

I've been on the Insider Preview for a few weeks. Will I get the full release rollout like everyone or do I need to do something to activate it? I've bypassed any MS account stuff so far.

Right after the first boot it hadn't managed to install the Nvidia driver. I just downloaded and installed it myself. Easy fix, just a few minutes.

Yeah, this is what I witnessed as well. First boot, the display drivers were off, tinkered with some things and restarted. Everything was fine at that point and then I installed the latest Nvidia W10 drivers. No problems at all.

So all the people updating with an NVIDIA card is going to have problem with the display driver?

Installed the Nvidia drivers (linked in this very thread) right after windows 10 install. I'm on a dual monitor/SLI setup, everything is working fine here. Just battling with unsigned drivers now.

I thought the upgrade was tied to your Microsoft account? Shouldn't you be fine if you log in to your account on the fresh install?

I think that's either bullshit, or it hasn't been implemented yet. When you go through the upgrade process, behind the scenes it gives you a completely new product key, which you'll need to find and input if you reinstall from scratch. There's no automatic activation simply from signing in with your Microsoft account.

Thats what I did though. I upgraded from 8 then did a clean install.

If you don't know your Windows 10 product key, you're going to have to reinstall Windows 8 and upgrade again.

Is there a way to get cortana to respond to "Hey Cortana". I know on the phones she does this but couldnt find anything on the desktop

Yup. Click Cortana -> Notebook icon -> Settings. There's a setting called "Hey Cortana" in there.

How is it with XBox and PS4 controllers? Are there any bugs?

Xbox controller works great. Drivers are included with Windows by default now.

If you use PS4 in DirectInput based games I believe it works fine. However, you need to use workarounds to get it to work in XInput as there are issues with DS4Windows on Win10.

GeForce Experience doesn't launch for me, just hangs on the loading splash screen. Work for you? This is w/ 353.62 drivers after clean DDU uninstall.

Both my desktop and laptop have been given the same product key when upgrading. Seems its a generic one used for those of us doing a free upgrade - so it's odd that the study activated but the laptop won't. There's no rush - could just be first day server issue.

Is it possible to use the program's game DVR to screenshot non-xbox games that I added to my library in the app itself?

Curious about this too. My Solitaire screenshots aren't showing up in my Xbox One activity feed.

edit: nevermind. got my Solitaire screenshot to show up in my activity feed. Just took a while. Gonna' try non-Microsoft Store game (doubt this works).

Should I have received my download notification by now? Are they sending them out in waves?

Just make sure automatic updates are enabled, your system is completely up to date and you should then get the Windows icon in the notification area to set up the reservation. From there, you just need to wait as they are indeed handling it in waves.

Going to ask this again so I can get this resolved.

Alright. I need some help here TechGAF. I started the installation process around 7:30 AM. It's now 11:55 AM. At first everything was going fine. The process was at 15% when my screen went blank, but was still lit up. I've tried forcing it off, then turning it back on, but that doesn't help. It still lets me access the standard Windows boot screen if that can help me out. Anyways, after it loads past the boot screen is when it continues to hang on a dimly lit empty screen. I guess Black Screen of Death?

i still dont have mine, east coast us.

i guess going out in waves or something hanging it up. it shows as failed in my update history every time i check for more updates.

the forced "fix" just ends in an error once it redownloads.

behind the scenes it gives you a new key? first ive heard that today (not saying its not true)

where exactly was I supposed to get that?

At home and at work I registered for the upgrade, but in neither case does it allow me to ugprade yet. Anyone know what's going on? I click the thing and it just says I've reserved my copy and I'll be notified when it's available.

Yes.

Just do Win + G in whatever you want. The Game Bar will then pop up, asking if this is a game. Just select Yes, and you can use all of the DVR and screenshot features.

It doesn't even need to be a game. You can do this in any app as well, which is great because you can do screen recording of anything without needing third party programs.

Just be sure NOT to update using the Windows Update driver, iirc.

It's able to be turned off in the settings

The only issue I've encountered with the Nvidia driver in Windows Update is that it requires a restart, but it never prompts you to do it. On my home setup, it installed but it didn't recognize my second monitor until I restarted. Afterwards, all was well. They pushed out like 3 updates to it in the past week to fix issues people were encountering, so the driver on there, for me at least, is solid.

Wrong. I upgraded to RTM from 8.1 and after checking if my installation was activated I reformatted and installed Windows 10 clean skipping all of the "key" prompts. Once I reached the desktop and was signed in with my MS account it automatically activated.

The "get windows 10" app thingy says their releasing it in waves, if you don't want to force update, just be patient

I still don't have a notification to update. I reserved the moment it was released. I hope I don't have to wait months for this.

Huh, it refused to activate for me until I put the key in.

Maybe putting the key in forced it to recheck or something...?
