Gamescom: Microsoft press conference (August 4; Scalebound, Crackdown, QB, H5+ more)

Last year was Tomb Raider announcement. I wonder if we'll see an equally shocking announcement this year...

Quantum Break release date needs to be announced. Most anticipated game right now...bet preorders will come with Alan Wake for free via BC.

I think they are leaning more on internal products than they were before.

We might see some timed-exclusive content deals for third party franchises but I'm betting that a lot of their attention and budget is going to be 1st party.

I'd say, especially after Sony's Q2 report, it will be very difficult for MS to make many more exclusive deals outside of them funding a game that may not have been made elsewhere and the dev didn't want to got the KS route ( think Chinese Room with Everyone's Gone to the Rapture for PS4). They'll have co financing deals and exclusive DLC or early access obviously, but even that is getting from them.

Makes me wonder if the deal SE made for Tomb Raider with MS will be worth it? Or if they already view that as a mistake?

Yeah, Microsoft definitely isn't getting anymore 3rd party exclusives from established well to do franchises. If they do, they're likely deals that were made before or soon after the launch of the XB1/PS4 - when sales were a lot tighter.

Moving forward, I don't see them getting anything outside of 3rd party titles bank rolled by Microsoft that would not have existed otherwise - as you said - or new IP's from publishers who are looking to mitigate the risks of releasing big budgeted unproven IP's. Even those might be a stretch, unless they team up with publishers who aren't doing too hot financially and could use the crutch.

I don't know, I've got a feeling we'll see Windows 10 (PC and Xbox One) deals, timed and exclusive, in addition to a good amount of first-party IP in the not so distant future.

You think MS isn't going to leverage installed user base across Windows 10 devices to lure more publishers and developers to release games on the Windows Store?

That seems fair. I know we're supposed to get a new game reveal, so I'm just wondering if it'll be a ReCore or Rise of Tomb Raider, you know? Like will they buy the rights to a franchise and release that is first-party exclusive. Like Silent Hills, even though that leak was bogus, something in that vein.

Stoked to see what happens, it's been a great year and only getting better.

Mobile is supposed to be released in October/November so I don't think we will see Windows 10 on the Xbox One sooner than that.

Windows 10 Mobile will be RTM in September/October and phones will be sold to it during the October/November timeframe. Windows 10 Mobile is broadly feature complete right now (From MS' Joe Belfiore) and they are in the polishing and tweak phase right now, but they are still adding features up till the end.

Windows 10 on Xbox is also being worked on right now as well...we don't know how much it is done but seeing as the core of it is Windows 10, I'm sure much of it is. The new UI shouldn't be that far off enough for users to test. The preview program will get the new UI much earlier than you may think. The latest I see it will be in September with the actual release in November...but I see them releasing the test build in August with the release of the new UI in late October early November.

EDIT: I think that you are discussing the official release and I was discussing the preview program release.

Sea of Thieves aswell

Probably something like

March - Quantum Break
May - Scalebound
July - Recore
September - Forza Horizon 3
October - Sea of Thieves/Crackdown
November - Gears

Scalebound and Recore might be switched, ntkrnl said spring 2016 for Scalebound and MS said spring 2016 for Recore but with QB being pushed back one of them will likely get pushed to summer.
Quantum Break will either release in February or March, that's guaranteed now.

I've always seen Scalebound as a March 2016 game but it can easily release in May instead.

Recore will probably be pushed to September. I'd love for it to release in July but I just can't see that happening. We'll get a full demo at E3 2016 since it won't be at Gamescom.

Gears 4 is obviously November next year. Though they may go the Halo 5 route and release it in October.

Sea of Thieves is easily a 2017 title. Face it, it's Rare, delays are everywhere this gen, and it's a shared world game so it requires a bit more work.

I'd like Crackdown to release next year but I can see it slipping into early 2017. I guess it depends on how much is shown at Gamescom. Maybe not even that. After all, we did get a full demo of Quantum Break last year and look how that turned out.

Maybe we'll see some 2017 teasers at gamescom? I don't think we know anything about about their 2017 other than the obvious (Forza 7)

I don't think so, August for Crackdown is possible but January for QB? I don't see it. They pushed it back to move out of the holiday rush, come January people are still playing all their new games for Christmas, if they're gonna release it in January I don't see the point in even pushing it back in the first place. March is the absolute earliest I can see it being released.
I feel like there has to be another AAA title for next fall that is exclusive. I see Crackdown pushing to 2017. I just can't believe their plan would be Gears, Sea of Thieves and Crackdown as the fall exclusive line-up. Hoping something else is in the mix.

Even if Crackdown is 2016, I'm not really sure where I see it fitting into their holiday 16 line-up as a key pillar. They will have Gears and Forza as $60 games, they will have at least one more if not two, perhaps Crackdown is one.

I think if there anything else hitting that period though, Gamescom is where it will be announced. If not a 2017 title as well

If Microsoft plans for Crackdown to be their "next big franchise" then I could see them using it to offset the Halo and Gears years (Halo, Gears, Crackdown, Halo, Gears, Crackdown, etc.) which would/should give each new title a three year development cycle. That's assuming Crackdown is supposed to be that franchise. Microsoft may not even know because you have to have the success before you can determine that, so it's still possible that Crackdown could release in 2016, then become that franchise later. There would still have to be something for 2017 though. It could end up being Sea of Thieves (despite the intended release being 2016 so far, it's highly possible that it'll get delayed given the game it is).

Undead labs may be ready to have something for 2016. They signed the multi game deal in January 2014. If they are in fact doing an mmo it could take more time.

Anyway I see it as( not counting Ubdead labs)

Quantum Break- February
Scalebound- March
Recore- June or July
Forza horizon 3 - September
Gears-November

Sea of thieves 2017
Crackdown - early 2017( could easily be a 2016 game depending on what gets shown at gamescom

I'm glad and hope that they are putting in more money into their 1st party studios, they have a some good studios on-hand and needs to let them flex their muscles a little bit. If anything the current situation should lead to an over better internal game studio environment for the long-term...especially going into Next-Gen assuming there is another Xbox in the works.

I wasn't really planning to since I have a packed weekend, but if there is no one else that wants to do it then I can probably come up with something. If there is a consensus that there should be a new thread, that is. Of course, this thread could serve as the Gamescom thread since it's already about the Microsoft presser. It's just that there are pages and pages of talk before the actual event that a new thread would get rid of.

I would like a new thread. I'm not good at OTs unfortunetly or i'd volunteer.

I still think that Crackdown - which we know is going to be cloud based, will be free-to-play. Fable Legends set the tone and there is this on the job listing for Cloudgine

Proven games development experience, particularly with open-world MMO games

http://www.cloudgine.com/jobs-physics-developer.html

Now, I could be wrong of course, it happens but I think it will follow the FL path of an initial Xbox One announcement, then coming to PC too and then free-to-play. With it being cloud based for destruction etc and its their poster child for it, thats my feeling.

Yeah, this is the time it'll have to be announced or at least around this time. Too close to have it be a pillar. I just can't believe Crackdown is having that much faith put in it..

To me, Sea of Thieves doesn't strike me as a AAA franchise or pillar. It'll review well and sell well, probably. But I can't believe it's something they'll lean on heavily.

Totally forgot about Undead Labs. They had that deal and haven't announced next project. State of Decay was summer of 2013. They have to have something in the works and close to finish I'd say. 2016 release date makes a lot of sense.

DayZ-type game finally? That would be awesome...

Given Undead Labs have been expanding and did the XB1 YOSE, moving to a new engine I think its because the follow-up is a while away personally. Announce next year for 2017 launch

2016:
Quantum Break - March
Scalebound - April
Recore - July or Aug
Forza Horizon 3 - September
Halo Reach Remastered - Oct
Gears - November

Sea of Thieves - late 2017
Crackdown - mid 2017

I am totally OK with this with my tweaks. Perhaps sprinkle a new surprise in there by end of next year (Halo Reach Remastered).

I don't see Recore before July however.

But it was a port. It's be silly to out the whole team in a port job. That would mean between 2013 and 2017 all they release was a port.

They aren't remastering reach. There's no point since it'll be available BC this year

This. (except the windows store part, just Xbox is avail on Windows 10 PCs and Consoles)
With Xbox on every device this will definetly be on their portfolio for developers instead of just 1 device Xbox is on. This is just the beginning of their 10 year plan. lol

i just made 10 years up.

EDIT:

News on news.xbox.com is updating constantly since yesterday. Newest post talks about games on windows 10 and mentions plenty of games not exclusive to the windows store. First game is League, 2nd WoW.
http://news.xbox.com/2015/07/windows-10-popular-games-you-can-play-right-now-on-windows-10

I bring this up so we can see where they are aiming and pushing the Xbox brand forward. Maybe we should think not only about Console but Xbox and its reach. Everyone who has a windows 10 version pc has the Xbox app whether they want it or not.

But it was a port. It's be silly to out the whole team in a port job. That would mean between 2013 and 2017 all they release was a port.

They also made two DLCs for the original game, a PC version and Moonrise for PC (and mobile?) which is a brand new IP and game for them.

They're over double what they were in 2013 iirc, new studio, new engine. They are undoubtedly thinking bigger and hopefully smoother running for their next game, they need time to get it right and they should be given that time.

Thought they said they were going to roll the Xbox store into the Windows Store? I'm sure there will be a filtered part of it on Xbox One, but it's under the Windows Store umbrella.

Xbox is no longer a console business and I think that's a great thing. It's a Windows 10 and Azure business, which are two of three of Nadella's core pillars that he completely reorganized the entire company around. They'll get to tap into resources in ways they never could before.

If MS plays their cards right over the next few years, and gaming becomes a significant revenue source of the Windows Store, they could have the largest gaming platform in the world and get more and more resources for games.

Well based on Phil's original tweet., he mentioned there would an equal amount of content and announcements at Gamescom since he 'balanced' the games to be announced between shows. I'd guess that there will be at least one new big game announcement along with all the usual big hitters like Quantum Break, Scalebound etc

Lionhead have been working on a new IP for a while now, haven't they?

Yes.

This was the quote from June last year:

"It's a team of about eight guys we have in the studio who are trying to build the next big IP for us," Needham said.

"They're working on a couple of new prototypes for completely different games - not Fable related. They'll also be working on new games we can put within Fable Legends as well."

Needham hinted we may get to see what Lionhead's incubation team comes up with sooner rather than later.

"The primary purpose of the group is to come up with new game IP, and we'll hopefully this next year have something exciting to talk about," he said.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...ad-has-8-person-team-building-its-next-big-ip

That being said, given John Needham has "returned to base" in Redmond who knows what is going on. Fable Legends still isn't out, I think its too early tbh. E3 next year

I hope we do get some type of information on the new Lionhead IP.
Atleast like an in-engine game trailer. I don't expect gameplay to be their first reveal for some reason. Perhaps my expectation is that they only focus on fable legends because i dont remember them talking about more than 1 game at a time.

THat would be really nice, but with Fable Legends around the corner it is likely they wont show their new IP until Fable Legends is released. Id imagine E3 2016 we will see their new ip.

I think Killer Instinct will show in one form or another, I saw KI featuring in a gamescom montage on the dash.

Ya, same. Weird thing to put in there that already has a Win10 port announced and season 2 finished. Season 3 would make sense.

Maybe something like, hey, "Season 3 starts on xxx, which is when you can download the Windows 10 version...remember cross-buy, cross-save and cross-play! Check out this sweet trailer with the first few characters announced"

As far as big announcements I'm hoping we get this.

4ZkFf0p.png

Sonic '16. First on Xbox One.

Yes they have, content wise its equivalent to
E3 I believe that is what Phil
said

I wouldn't get my hopes up for that. I'm sure there'll be one or maybe two nice announcements, but E3 has always been on a whole different level as far as announcements and content goes.

I would love to hear that games with deep menu systems to sort through will optionally use the Elite controller's four rear buttons as additional buttons, not just replacers for A/B/X/Y.

...yeah, I know the Elite is intended to be for a more niche market. But more shortcut buttons in RPGs would be nice. Hey, I can dream, right?

I really want to be able to map all of the directional controls for Elite Dangerous.
