Upgrade to Windows 10?

This must be a little bit of a nightmare for driver / game providers... no?

Practically EVERYONE is jumping on W10 at once... and screaming for their stuff to work on this new OS.

Nothing they can do but get notified and then fix it. Even with a long lead time, it's hard to know how configuration of hardware/software would cause a bug, with one particular hardware revision, running this firmware, and this driver. Boom something breaks.

Apple has it easy.

I reserved on day 1 during the registration process, but haven't gotten the Download Ready notification yet.

I check every night, but still nothing.

I've heard some good stories and some bad stories, mostly driver-related, so I hope whenever my turn comes up, my drivers are all compatible.

I'm not doing a clean install, just a Win 7 to Win 10 direct upgrade. Hope it goes smoothly.

Seems like if you have an older Vista or earlier laptop the chances are you won't get drivers for a few things.

I installed 10 on a 5 yr old Vista laptop and the wireless chip doesn't work, had to dig out a USB dongle to get online with it.

Checked Intel driver support, and support stopped at 8, seems 8.1 & 10 are a no go.

Same here. But I usually prefer clean installs with new OS deployments so this wasn't detrimental to me.

Likewise. I'll most likely do a clean install when upgraded. It would be nice to have the prompt though. I didn't do a clean install yet on my Dell laptop because I don't know what drivers to download for it and I'm too lazy to contact Dell about it.

Cant seem to get Bluetooth working with DS3 scp driver. Went from win 7 to 10 and I could unplug the ds3 and it would seamlessly switch to wireless. Now it just does 4 blinking lights then nothing.
Tried uninstalling then reinstalling, running admin, turning off UAC but nothing works.

Ok I got it working. When installing the the driver, check "force install".

On another note, switching tabs in chrome gives me the spinning circle mouse pointer for a few secs. Not really a big deal but it never did this in win 7.

Need some Direct X 12 demos, surprised they didn't put something on the store like Apple with metal. Oh well.

Do you have 3DMark? You can run the API Overhead test at the very least, which does use DX12.

Just give the Win8 driver a shot. It will likely continue to work. Every hardware manufacturer in the world who has ever made a driver for Windows doesn't need to update it for every release. There is still a certain level of backwards compatibility in drivers as well.

Are you using the ISO image on your USB? If so, consider a corrupt download. If you have used fresh images, you may be faced with a hard disk writing error. Have you noticed strange behavior from that hard disk before? Is it an SSD?

Yes it's an SSD, and no I've never had any abnormal behavior from it.

I'm gonna try and create a USB one from a different computer. Every time I attempt it on mine, it hangs at 50% for "creating Windows 10 media" then gives me the stupid "something happened" message

Check your update history - Mine had Windows 10 fail a bunch of times. I ended up making a USB bootable from the MS website and ran the installer (just upgrade) from that. Worked like a charm.

When I upgraded from 7 to 10, then proceeded to clean reinstall from an iso, I totally forgot to first connect into my microsoft account to bind the license to it and the hardware...
So the activation failed on the reinstall ultimately.

Now I'm doing it right I hope, I'll first setup the MS account on W10, wait a few and then go ahead with a clean install. (Please activate without fuss, W10!)

So I've not got 10 yet but I had an email saying it could be days or even weeks.

If I want to do an install from scratch, what do i do about a product key?

I dont think you'll need one. I did the install via USB after getting the same email you did. The instructions said something about a product key but I was never prompted to enter one.

My experience going from 8.1 to Windows 10. When I read it could take 'weeks' until it was my turn I decided there was no way I was going to wait for that and decided to risk using the link posted earlier in this thread.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

That one for reference, downloaded the 64-bit version. I clicked update and told the updater I wanted to keep all my programs, or well apps as they call them now. The installer downloaded Windows 10 after that, restarted to update and I had no problems at all with the installer after that.

Windows 10 does try to be slightly sneaky with asking if I wanted standard settings a few times though and finding what the advanced settings was meant finding the small text to open them that was often hidden in some corner. At any rate installation wise I had zero problems, all my programs also transferred over and works in windows 10.

The one problem I had was when I wanted to update to the latest Nvidia driver I think Geforce Experiance still thought I had Windows 8.1 and downloaded a faulty one that ended up being corrupted. Had to reinstall Geforce Experiance to get it to work again but so far that's the only problems I have.

It also seems to have worked to upgrade it like this since Windows 10 says it has been activated.

I went from Windows 7 to 10, and I couldn't be happier. No issues. Seems much improved in some ways. Love it lots.

I can see that if you never had 8.1. Seems like they took 8.1 and cut all the fat out of it.

I installed it from scratch using a USB drive but couldn't activate it cause my 8.1 product key wouldn't work. So I installed 8.1 and then upgraded. What I noticed while upgrading is that it asks if you want to keep any of your files. I wonder if it installs from scratch if you chose not to keep any of your personal files and settings

I'm wondering. Is Microsoft trying to tell me that the Windows 10 drivers for my hardware aren't ready yet and if I force an upgrade now, I'm entering a world of pain?

Click the menu button in the upper-left and click "check my PC" and see what compat report it gives you.

I did that and the only program that came up incompatible was Fallout 3: GOTY.

I had a hardy lol @ that. Don't worry WIndows 10, FO3 doesn't want to play with your siblings either.

So I just downloaded the Media Creation tool because I'm going to do a full wipe and fresh install. I already have W10 on here which runs fine but it looks like it's downloading everything again. Is this tool not able to create the setup just from my PC or does it have to download everything from scratch again?

We don't really know. I'm assuming based on the data they have, they probably are rolling out the updates based on what info the enrolment gave them. However my neighbours have identical asus laptops, (bought 3 months apart) but one got the upgrade, and the other has not yet. So who knows.

This might have already been asked but does anyone know how to invert the touchpad scrolling settings to make it behave like it does on windows 7? I am on an Asus UX31A using the latest Smart Gesture version 4.0.6

Edit: figured it out, smart gesture wasnt loading.

Well, it says everything is in order, so I guess my 'wave' hasn't come yet. Looks like it's forcing time.

Does anyone have the problem of your laptop not properly going into sleepmode when you close the lid? When I open, all I have to do is press the power button and it takes me straight back to where I was rather than taking me back to my account's password screen. My laptop is Dell if that is of any relevance.

'Require password on wake'. It's an advanced setting housed under Power Options, if I'm not mistaken.

My laptop says Check my PC isn't currently available, is this normal? It also hasn't started downloading the OS.
Not in hurry to upgrade but just making sure I'm on the queue at least.

MacBook Air Mid 2013 here

Bootcamp:

None of my Fn keys work anymore since doing an upgrade from Win 8.1 /:

Is anyone else having this issue? I've tried downloading the latest bootcamp drivers 5.1.5621 but no luck

Any ideas much appreciated

Okay for the last time guys

The failure notices do not mean it failed. They mean it looked to see if I should and the answer was no..

No, you can do it perfectly with local accounts just need the PC connected to the net.

What a pain the ass to get the weather app to work with my location. It asked you to type in a location, but any place I tried showed no results so couldn't go further. On my desktop PC, somehow, I just messed around and got it to work. Next, upgraded my tablet and spent hours try to figure out. By random chance, I use Cortana to search for weather, the local weather forcast showed up with option to see in the weather app, click on the link, weather app fully opened, go into settings, and then, I could dot auto select location.

I'll see if that works, it's not my laptop, so my tinkering time was limited to installing 10 and discovering what worked and what didn't. Hope it does as it's my parent's laptop, and I have to make the trip every time they can't figure something out.

edit: worst case I can just resinstall 7

Re-posting this as I'm desperate for help:

Anyone else with sound issues ? I can only hear sound from the left speaker of my headphones... A real deal breaker for me.

Any help would be appreciated.

What audio driver is currently installed? Microsoft generic driver or manufacturer's driver?

I believe Realtek. I tried uninstalling it and installing the latest version (with Win 10 support), but it keeps uninstalling / rebooting / installing / rebooting / uninstalling / etc. It's stuck in a loop.

I tried letting is reboot after installing and then cancelling the uninstall, but I still have the same problem.

So at work I have an HPZ620 workstation with a builtin nVidia Quadro 600, and I'm using a Dell P2714T monitor with touchscreen support. Windows installs a Generic PnP monitor driver and generic video driver. It doesn't seem to detect my aspect ratio correctly so I'm stuck in 1024x768 and it looks like shit stretched out into 16x9. I tried getting a new monitor driver from the manufacturer but Dell claims they don't support Windows 10 with this monitor, and I tried downloading drivers for a Quadro 600 directly from nVidia and the driver fails to install for an unspecified reason.

I think I am going to have to get a new monitor and video card for this to work :-/

Hi Guys,

Things seem to be working now, I do have one question though

I have a multiple screen set up via HDMI, I like to game on the larger TV whilst browsing on the other. Will W10 make more games compatible to do this? or will have to alt tab out for everythng?

oh and my Witcher 2 gamesave has been erased somehow, I go to continue my game and poof! gone

Any help you can provide would be great,

Thanks again,

Love

B

Welp, I'm officially running Windows 10. Most things seemed to have made the transition without too much issue. Is a clean install really necessary, GAF? Everything seems to be running fine.

Seems like there are more troubleshooting issues going on here so I thought I would post my findings here as well.

Is anyone having issues with their monitor not going into sleep mode at the desired time set in power options? I had no problems with this in 8.1 with my monitor going into sleep mode. Doesn't seem to be working for me in Windows 10. I even tried to set a screensaver to start with 1 minute of idle time and it isn't working. This happened on an upgrade install and a fresh install.

So, after a few days the only thing that doesn't work is my Dolby Advance whatever.... it says the wrong driver is installed or something, but there's no fix, seemingly, for it. Everything else went smooth though.
