Still won't let me upgrade:

What exactly does this mean?

That sounds like drivers aren't ready for a certain piece of hardware you have, but they will be eventually

It's not gonna completely install it for you. There are some settings it will ask you to set. Leave it to run while you're out if you want but expect when you come back to spent a little time finishing the process.
The entire process is 1-2 hours if you're upgrading (not clean install)

No, you can choose whether you want to log in using an account or just create a local user like in the W7 days.

Hmm that was from a pre-edge time, but maybe its still worth a shot. Then the only thing I need to get rid of is the always on taskbar in tablet mode
So, my plan to go from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 10 was going really well. This morning I forced the upgrade via the registry, onto Windows 10 32-bit. Then I created a USB stick with the 64-bit Windows 10 installer, and after some boot priority jiggery-pokery, clean installed Windows 10 64-bit with the license intact.
Except it turned out that it was 32-bit. Basically, in the media creation tool, I'd set it to 64, then changed the language, and not realised that for some reason that then reset the version back to 32. So now I'm on a clean install 32 and downloading 64, but it is now absolutely crawling. This morning when I downloaded the tool it took maybe half hour, this afternoon I'm at 20% after four hours

For fuck sake, Windows is constantly trying to install an "optional feature" but keeps on failing. It's trying to install an additional English language pack thing and it keeps on failing so it's like in some dumb ass fucking infinite loop. Downloads, fails. Downloads, fails. Sigh. How is it "optional" if it tried to do it automatically?
ok this is odd. I just set up the kid's laptop with Win 10, and signed in with my MS account initially as administrator. But my wallpaper from my main desktop just popped up. So is it syncing settings based on my MS account? If so, how do I stop it doing that? I don't want any changes on my laptop to be reflected back on my desktop, which I have set up how I want it.
I have a Nvidia GPU and I read on Reddit that I need to install the latest drivers? Should I just install the ones from their website and restart Windows 10 in order to change the resolution?
I can't use GeForce Experience or Nvidia Control Panel, as they don't show up when I try to open them.

It means the OEM has notified Microsoft they don't have their drivers and/or software ready yet for users to upgrade.

I think the "right" method there would have been to in-place upgrade to 10 first and then wipe and clean install. MS is making this upgrade process way too annoying for people who want to start clean instead of do it in-place.

I always enjoy a clean install when I upgrade my OS. It's like purification. Even the process of installing old apps is pleasant. It's like finishing a cut then clean bulking.
That's what I did. I just fucked up clean installing 32 rather than 64, and now the 64 download is taking forever (I assume because the servers are being hammered).
I have sort of approached my Surface Pro Windows 10 upgrade as the general public would to see how it goes, and it has been nothing but problems compared to my desktop upgrade before release.
The windows update upgrade fails with error 80070006 every time.
The media tool upgrade fails during first boot phase.
There is no clear guidance for a consumer on what to do in these circumstances, you just get forwarded to a generic help page.
If it is to do with free space, there is nothing left that I can remove from the HDD. It is a 64GB surface pro, has 22GB free space and the rest is taken up by Windows 8 files.
I can obviously initiate a clean install of Windows 8.1 myself, but your general consumer is not going to do that.
Oh and the Windows 10 upgrade deletes it self every time it is failing, and then Windows update has to re-download it all again.

I used the download tool to install Windows 10, but while it was in the final installation phase, it suddenly shut off (and my laptops power button was flashing as if it was asleep).
When I turned it back on I got this:

The menu that appears when you right click the start button isn't working for me.
For example when I click control panel on that menu it won't open.
I have to open it from search or a desktop shortcut.
Also, does anyone know how to change permissions for the Windows store?
It's telling me that I can't change a setting with contacting my system administrator when my account is the only one on the pc and listed as administrator when I check.

okay new update, I'm back to Windows 7 back to where things used to be.
It gave me an error message for the "image_finding" or something like that.
Goddammit
So the last few times I've turned on my pc I get a system error for ColorUService.exe because file MSVCP100.dll is missing from my computer. From googling there seem to be loads of programs to download to fix it but I don't know how trustworthy they would be. Anyone here got some more know how?

I like edge, but it's the small things that'll make me never use it as my daily driver, no apps (hover zoom add-block), no right click to open image in new tab, no right click google search image, I don't like the right click search in big in either, 2 steps instead of the 1 with chrome.
By the time they get that fixed it'll probably be way too late for me to go back, it's a shame because otherwise I didn't mind it.
Now I just have to debate on whether to use chrome or FF, which is the less of a system hog if you use a shit ton of tabs normally?

Hi I just installed Windows 10 using the link in the OP.
But in the Display setting it doesn't show a resolution higher than 1024 x 768.
I don't understand. I was using Windows 7 on 1366x768 resolution just minutes ago.
Can someone help me get the windows 10 1366x768 resolution working please?

I'm not seeing a windows upgrade icon for my Winfows 7 laptop so I went to Windows update and started to update from this morning. Just came back to my computer after being away for over 9 hours and it is saying Installing Update 44 out of 68. It might be stuck because shouldn't something like this be done already after 9 HOURS??

You're probably just missing the right video driver but Windows Update should grab it.

It's a generic key. The activation is tied to the hardware itself (BIOS/UEFI or motherboard).
As long as it says "activated" you can clean install just fine or do the Reset.
Really? But the terms say you can transfer your retail license to another PC. I'm confused...
Everyone who upgrades has the same key for that version. You don't have a retail licence, you have an upgrade one. Although if you call them, they might transfer it anyway if needed.
