Final Fantasy XV 'Dawn' trailer

And FFXIII spells this out for the player, just the vocal internet minority find it offensive that they had to learn a fake word or two so they pretend the game can only be understood through a datalog.

Are you kidding me? I learned an entire conlang for Ar Tonelico and you're going to play THIS card on me? haha no, FF13's failures in writing are entirely its own

Thanks, I appreciate the perspective. Definitely adds some much needed context to the trailer. I'd say it's biggest failing is having anything to do with FNC, and not just going out and becoming its own thing. It definitely muddies things unnecessarily. At least at this point

The thing is, it doesn't even necessarily need the FNC stuff to make sense. The text in the trailer suggests a king's son is being offered up as some kind of tribute, and is then given a destiny. Then you see a king and his son, the king's crying and has his sword out, and three giant beings approach.

Whether you know about Fal'cie or L'cie or not, the narrative is still the same - gods/chosen ones. They could ditch the naming scheme and it wouldn't change a thing.

it's not a well written story, but it is easy to understand what is happening.

Hmm, I was kinda okay with the trailer. I would rather this than the typical spoiler trailer SE does lately. Sure it stayed too long on the father son scene, but it's not like I'm mad impatient for news and info, so it was fine.

I will say though that I thought FFXV was distancing itself away from FNC. To see it return is kinda disappointing. I've not been following closely, as I'd rather play the game than read/watch it, so I don't remember if that was always the case. A bit of a bummer to me.

Yes, because twisting people's words or putting words in their mouth isn't something you did a page ago :P

Uhh... look at my original post and tell me how I twisted people's words and put it in their mouth. I didn't. I was addressing a segment of the userbase for this thread directly. lol.

I understood it just fine.

And that's why I don't like it. Understanding how stupid it really is just makes it worse.

But the game still failed hard in its story delivery. Without lots of extra work from the player and reading encyclopedias, the very basic, main narrative falls utterly apart. Giving it context only explains how the lunacy happens... but it still doesn't mean it was good writing.

Way too old.

This is what I come here for. I have to skip the first 25 pages of inane, whiny entitled bullshit on average per thread to find it, thanks.

Which parts were CGI and which ones were from game engine? I think the only game engien parts were with the soldiers around the car with the dog sniffing since they had hard polygonal edges and and non CGI fur on the dog.

I agree that it's not very clear, and explaining doesn't make the trailer magically better, but the idea is this from my understanding.

"As the stars chose the son to be their light"

The gods (assumedly fal'cie that have appeared in previous games) have chosen Noctis for an unknown mission, which based on FF XIII (which is wrapped around the same mythos as FF XV) would not end well for the chosen one, no matter the result of his/her mission.

"The father could but hold him and mourn his destiny"

The father (King Regis) knows what awaits his son, but is powerless to do anything despite being a powerful man.

This leads to the scene where he (as the text says), can do nothing but hold him in front of the gods who have chosen the child to be their servant.
He can just assure the child (sleeping calmly, ignorant of his own situation) that he will always be there for him, no matter what. And this leads to the adventure we're going to experience in Final Fantasy XV.

It's a simple scene, but difficult to understand without the context of FNC mythos where this trailer really fails.

This was my interpretation too. But, you don't really need to know anything about FNC mythology to get that Regis is sad about what lies in store for his son. The trailer literally says he can only mourn his destiny.

Anyone with kids should be able to identify with what he's going through over this 75 seconds (or whatever). It's not an awkward hug, it's a dad holding his sleeping son on his shoulder and worrying about his future, and his (the dad's) powerlessness to change it, and thinking about how he needs to stay strong for his son who isn't even old enough to know what's gone down.

Pretty basic human emotion stuff, and I for one am not sorry they're willing to highlight such a basic, non-flashy moment.

Yes, the FNC stuff could add some specific context on top of that.

Now, is that enough for a hotly anticipated trailer for a long overdue game? Maybe not.

Huh interesting that Dawn was just a teaser trailer so I wonder if we get another trailer at the ATR? Or if they will drop a big one at TGS anyway just an hour until the ATR

I've watched the trailer so many times now and it has really grown to me.

I agree that it's not a good trailer to promote the game, especially to people who haven't been following the development.

But personally I think I finally "got it" after the initial confusion, when I wrap this around the FNC mythos.

What I personally feel from the scene is that here's King Regis, the great ruler of his kingdom, he has all the wealth and power in the world. Yet he is unable to protect his loved son from the divine fate that has been cast on him, presumably something bad. He's surrounded by his great crown city yet completely exposed to the greater forces above them.

The gods (fal'cie) aren't necessarily there physically, but he can still sense them watching, waiting to take away his only son. All he can do is hold him.

We don't know much about Regis but to me it really paints the image of how he is a loving father, before anything else.

I think it's a great foundation to whatever is coming, no blaming anyone who doesn't feel the same but that's my personal feeling.

This is great, actually.

Entire thing was real time.

Wow, wow wow really wow. Japanese devs slept much in the last-gen in terms of graphics and techs and game engines and now they pulled the Luminous engine, Fox Engine, Panta Rhei Engine which surpass most of the western engines. They are coming back like at the PS2 gen where japanese had most of the best looking games (at least on consoles since they didn't develop that much on PC at that time) at that time.

Does anyone have any theories as to what the three beings behind the forcefield are?

The leftmost one kind of resembles the Iron Giant monster design. The center one looks like it has extra arms (Hecatonchier?), though I was hoping Gilgamesh would be more central to this game considering Noctis's collection of weaponry being similar. Don't know about the rightmost one but maybe Alexander?

I liked the trailer as a teaser.
It shows the range of emotions they can convey and intend to convey with the game. The scene was very well built and the extra time spent on it helps in bringing the sense of helplessness of the situation.

Is that the same car that Noctis has as a grown man? Is this some sort of beggar kingdom where they can't afford new cars?

You can count the amount of Japanese developers who are pushing tech like this on one hand. And the Fox Engine is dead after Konami dumps MGSV and moves on. Harking back to the PS2 days is more than a stretch.

Uncharted 4 still looks a lot better imo.

The fact that that's realtime is fucking impressive. Regardless of the trailer showing practically nothing, that's insane.

I'd agree with that! Difference being Uncharted 4 is definitely more streamlined and less open I guess. Still pretty crazy visuals.

You mean to tell me you've never had a 'classic' car, jett?

That sumbitch is an antique chick-magnet once Noct gets his driving + summoning license! ;)
