In Scooby Doo Mystery Inc.
the final episode's villain is an ancient extra-dimensional being. The being consumes several people including Fred's parents. One of the new members of the gang dies the previous episode protecting the rest of them. The entity feasts upon the townspeople until the gang seals him back into his sarcophagus. This causes a black hole which implodes the galaxy.

They awake in an alternate reality. A world without mysteries...

One thing that you didn't notice:
They didn't really awake in an alternate world without mysteries, but in the world that the original Scooby Doo series takes place in before they head out on their adventure.

I want this Scooby gang.

Mystery Incorporated is probably my favorite western animated tv show in existence. It's a shame about the new series.

I also now feel a strong urge to write a gritty, dark and gory detective novel starring a bunch of teenagers trying to solve mysteries.

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin. I'll catch them meddlin kids for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad kids. Not like goin down to the roller rink chasin punks and whippersnappers. These kids, tear your mask right off. Little shakin, little pullin, an off it goes. And we gotta do it quick, that'll scare away your tourists, put all your business on a payin basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my identity a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find em for three, but I'll catch em, and kill em, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay spooky, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no henchmen, there's too many monsters on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the dog, the kids, the whole damn gang.

I actually thought
they woke up in the original 1960's cartoon universe but with knowledge of the prior universe as well. They hinted at this when they all decided since they were the only people who had lived through the terrors of the mystery inc universe they should just hop into the mystery machine and travel around America looking for mysteries. It was kind of dark ending because even though everyone who had died was now alive & happy the gang had no memories of these people so they all felt like strangers.

All in All Mystery Inc was the best love letter to the who Scooby Universe I've ever seen.

You guys finally convinced me to start Mystery Inc. a few hours ago on Netflix. This show is actually really good, surprised I haven't heard of it sooner.

I came into this topic expecting silly responses, and I come out of it having a massive need to watch Mystery Inc...

I would recommend trying out a few episodes on Netflix. The characterizations can be a little strange and off-putting but they all feel like natural progression for the Gang as a whole.

Yes you are correct.

Oh sweet didn't know it was actually on Netflix, that means I'm definitely getting on it.
Watched a bit- the style and animation really catch me, and I look forward to seeing how they handle the characterizations though so far I get what you mean by strange and off-putting.

This is really cool, I never expected to be watching some good Scooby Doo since my childhood ;_;

The first few episodes of Mysteries Incorporated are kind of bad, which I say as a fan of the series. It just wasn't very sure of itself yet. But the series improves a lot by the second half of the first season, and then it's great for the rest of the ride. It wears its Lovecraft influence on its sleeve, even prominently featuring a "Professor Hatecraft", author of books like Char'gar Gothakon: The Beast that hath No Name. Plus it has Patrick Warburton as the sheriff.

Something I loved about MI is that it wasn't afraid to refrence other things and it was grecall backs to other Hanna Barbara shows and movie homages were great. Stuff like this Terminator reference is great both as how well it works and as a stand alone monster.

Daphne and Velma pretty much cover all bases, to be fair. I am a huge Velma fan, but she got kind of annoying at first in the Mystery Inc. series, making a man choose between herself and a dog is mean.

And hilarious.

But also mean.

Also is it me or Scooby was pretty much non-existent before that plot came up? I am on episode 7 right now.

Mystery inc is my favorite Scooby Doo show ever. A shame it only got two seasons, but two sang good seasons. Guess it's time to rewatch the series soon.

Apparently only two seasons were ever planned, or at least they said it was just going to be two seasons anyway.

Sometimes I'd like to tell people to start consuming mature media instead of hoping that every one of their beloved childhood franchises get a gritty and serious reboot.

Every beloved childhood franchise gets one decent reboot.

Mystery Incorporated, Spectacular Spider-Man, Transformers: Beast Wars, Friendship is Magic...

I'm sure that even G.I. Joe will get one... eventually.

They had Bruce Willis and somehow still fucked it up.

Yeah, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo was the first probably.

The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show is the first that I can remember. Had an episode with an actual witch in (checking the wiki it was called "Swamp Witch" and aired in 1980). Blew my mind as a kid as I wasn't used to actual ghosts.

Then there was Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School which was awesome

This sounds groovy and I'm not at all familiar with it.
Is there a place to watch it?

It's on Netflix right now.

I miss Ghoul School. ): I haven't seen it since I was a kid, haven't caught it on TV, not at my library, and can't find it legally online. Unless it's on iTunes, but I don't use iTunes. Boo. EDIT: Actually I checked my library again after this post and now they have the movie. Complaining on NeoGAF pays off. <3 Also they have a movie where they go to the moon, what?
Why am I even shocked.

I liked their darker reinterpretation in Venture Bros. Not-scooby was hilarious.

I would usually laugh this off but Scooby was pretty fierce competition.

Oh wow, I never made that connection, but I never seriously watched the original cartoon.

What about the
professor who said he remembered the old reality as well? Was that a part of the original cartoon?

Its on Netflix and very good.

+ multiple serious overarching mysteries and foreshadowing
+ quality original characters
+ legitimate twist moments
+ nice variety of monsters
+ gets pretty fucking dark at times
+ romance!

Velma and Shaggy, right?

Scoobs and Fred. I feel like Fred and Scooby never hung out and if they did the audience would realise that Shaggy is empirically useless. He is the human Jar-Jar Binks.

I like to pretend Velma is actually a sadistic serial killer who can barely contain herself. She is always riding the edge, overflowing with rage and contempt, but restrained enough so that no one notices. Every character, no matter how minor, who appears at one moment but never again she has brutally raped and murdered. Later, when the show is not airing, she laboriously processes their corpses into various materials for clothing, food, or accessories.

Scooby knows her secret. However, being a dog, concepts such as society, the human condition, mortality, and compassion are to him abstract. So he says nothing.

I mean, it's three sexy teenagers and a hippie burnout with a dog traveling around investigating paranormal shit that turns out to be... well, psycho criminals that dress up or pull elaborate hoaxes. I'm surprised there's been no dark take on it where they either come across something ACTUALLY supernatural at which point it becomes a genuine horror story, or one of these criminals they put away tries to just off them.

What about Zombie Island?
