2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hey all. Looking for suggestions on a laptop.

Location: US
Budget: Anywhere between $1500-$2000
Size: 14-15"
Usage: Gaming (Mostly play Dota, GTA, FFXIV, but looking to play like Fallout 4 and Battlefront.) For work sometimes using photoshop and other video editing programs.

I'll be bringing this with me to work so weight is important to me.

Recently looking at the Alienware 15 though it is bulkier and on the heavier side. I watched some review videos and I like the specs, but the battery life isn't that great and the battery pack is huge.
http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-15/pd?ref=PD_OC

This is another laptop that I saw mentioned (not sure if here) though on other pc sites. Looks very slender and close to what I would need to game and transport to and from work.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152567

Tthere are the MacBook Pro laptops though I'm not really into using another mac. I was looking at Razer Blade laptops. They are really expensive but they look of a higher quality. I don't think I can splurge over $2000 on a laptop.

I haven't bought a laptop in awhile so I'm really open to suggestions and guidance. Thanks!

Might as well settle on the GS60.

Good GPU and CPU, IPS, thin/light, 2 year warranty (+1 year accidental when you register on MSI.com), great Steelseries keyboard.

Total package.

Hi all,

I had a workstation laptop (Dell Precision M6600, Quadro 4000m, i7-quad) that I cherished and used daily over the last 2 years. It was included as part of my tuition for my game development master's degree. I recently had it stolen out of my car during a stop at a restaurant in Houston. I'm pretty emotionally devastated about the whole thing, but I'm looking at getting a replacement to ease some of the pain. I can't seem to find it new anymore, but I've seen refurbs available for $750 on Newegg. I figure instead of getting the same laptop I received 2 years ago I should maybe just get an upgrade.

Request details:
USA
$1000 (equivalent or better to my M6600 if possible at this range) - Up to $2,000 (for a serious upgrade)
Max size 17". Weight is less of a big deal as it will also double as my desktop. Plus I was used to lugging my M6600 around. I wouldn't mind a smaller screen if it reduced the price some.
Planned usage: Heavy use of Unreal Engine 4, Unity and possibly Maya. I also frequently edit videos in Premiere. Ability to play modern games at least 60fps/720. I had no problem playing the games I wanted to on my M6600 but I wouldn't mind a nice performance boost within my price range.

I've got a similar budget and am thinking of picking this one up.

Here's my problem. I've got a 2 1/2 year old Lenovo Y500 (i7 3630 @ 2.40GHz, 650M SLI, 8GB ram) that just had the motherboard die and it's obviously out of warranty. I have no idea how much it would cost to fix, but my gut says it won't be cheap (I plan to field repair prices with Lenovo sometime this week).

What I wanted to do prior to this mechanical failure was wait until next year to upgrade. Hoping to get more bang for my buck in 12 months or so.

So now I don't know if I should try to get my laptop fixed and wait it out, or just say f it and jump on the deal noted above. Those specs sure do look sweet for the asking price.

Is there a general "season" that is best to buy a new laptop? Kind of like when car dealerships have fire sales to get rid of last-year's model to make room for the new vehicles?

I don't feel like I have to have a new laptop right now if I can get the old one fixed cheap. But if it's gonna be expensive, it seems like wasting my money for a band-aid that's only gonna carry it forward another 12 months or so.

What do you guys think?

I'm a college student looking for a laptop that could handle most AAA games on medium settings. My price limit was $800 including shipping/taxes/all that jazz.

After looking for a few months and not really finding anything to my liking I got this laptop as soon as it went on sale.

Are Asus laptops generally high quality? The panel is probably TN but does Asus generally use good ones? I was also wondering about the speaker quality, keyboard, and touchpad (although I'm planning on getting a separate mouse. Recommendations would be nice there).

I've been following this thread for a few months now and it's reaply given me insight into what to look for in a laptop, especially when coming from the desktop side of things. So thanks to OP and all the others who contribute.

We looking for Quadro or Geforce?

SomereviewsI've read talk about a really bad LCD such as http://www.pcworld.com/article/2463...performance-spoiled-by-a-sub-par-display.html

But thanks, I'll try and use that as a benchmark for specs on similar units.

The 2014 model has a crap screen. The 2015 model which I'm using now has an IPS screen, and it's pretty good.
Any Y50 model number that starts with 5944 should be a 2015 model with an IPS screen, so look out for those.

Yep, 2015 models are all IPS.

What do you guys think?

I'd expect the mobo to run around ~500, as that's about what range every laptop mobo I've been quoted was fell into, rarely exceeding that. Assuming I'm right, do you spend $500, when $979 can get you an 860M equipped Y50, which is faster (35-45%) than your 650M SLI? I wouldn't. The 860M is 3

We all want to stretch our current machines until Pacal, but spending that much for a 2.5 year old mobo wouldn't sit right with me. What if something else fails before Pascal, which should hit around the summer of 2016? Do you spend even more on the Y500? That's the trouble with repairing laptops which are that far out of warranty. When is enough, enough?

Maybe the best move would be getting something like that Y50 instead, and sitting on that until Nvidia's Pascal in 2016. If you spend nearly $2k now, it'll be harder to stomach spending that again next year. The GTX 970M is strong enough to last 3-4years, so buying one of those now means you're with that machine for the long haul.

There is no best time to buy, except when you absolutely need it. The worse time to buy is when you absolutely know something new is due for imminent release. Waiting for things that don't even have release dates is dangerous. We know Pascal is 12 months away, but that's it.

what is display lag like on most gaming laptops, particuly ASUS G-series models?

Might get a laptop for SF5 next year.

1. Lag is imperceptible

2. I'd buy an MSI or Alienware over ASUS, they aren't worth the money today

Asus' current generation is okay. That's the best deal under $800 right now, so you did good.

The speakers are likely to suck though.

Thanks guys. Now I just need to work out how to find one of these 5944x models. Lenovos site has the y50 for 1200 with a discount code but they don't list model number and I'm concerned they're offloading these 2014 models you speak of.

The reason I'll stick with ASUS is their laptops even under full load, stay under 60C. Each one I've bought has lasted for 7-8 years, even if they become obsolete after 3-4. Since the only AAA games I play tend to be fighting games, I can build around SF5 and probably be ok if I wanted, and I do need the portability.

Dang. I really appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Maybe I'll use this Y50 as a stop-gap and go for the Pascal in late-2016 or mid-2017. I imagine those specs should run Fallout 4 just fine.

I noticed two deals in the same price range on the linked page. Here's the only difference.

$979 (save $620)
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB
-16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz

Or

$999 (save $400)
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 2GB
-8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz

So I wonder which will give me better gaming performance, 860M(4GB) w/ 16GB Ram, or 960M(2GB) w/ 8GB Ram.

Kind of seems like a wash to me.

Thanks for your tireless efforts either way!

Just checked out Lenovo's AU site. Looks like they show the model number after you add to cart.
The $1200 model appears to be model 59445775, so that one should be good.

I have the $979 model 59440646. It's a solid laptop, and it upgraded to Windows 10 quite well, too.
The difference between the 960m and 860m is really small (1097MHz vs 1020MHz, same exact chip otherwise), and the 860m can be overclocked by +135MHz out of the box.
I'd go for the $979 model, as imo you're more likely to need more RAM and VRAM than need 77 extra MHz, and I can attest that the Intel 3160 wifi card is pretty decent.

Okay. Sounds like the $979 Y50 is the ticket.

I'm going to purchase tomorrow.

Now just to put my neurotic mind at ease, this is basically the best $1K I can spend on a gaming laptop at the moment? I know prices change all the time. I just have this fear of missing a better prospect.

But seriously, a big thank you to all. This thread and its participants are pure gold.

OK, thanks, I didn't think to try that. It's a bit disappointing looking at the other y50 being talked about above with double vram and ram for the same price but what can I do except complain about the Australia tax. :/

Can you add ram and an ssd to these? This looks like the best deal I can get I guess so I'll probably be buying tomorrow or later tonight as well.

Thanks again.

Actually, I googled and the upgrades seem possible. I'll wait for a couple of hours to allow someone to talk me out of it otherwise I'll probably bite.

This thread would be a waste of effort, if every recommendation wasn't the best available.

So, after some frustration over my computers struggle with a few games, I'm now really on the fence about upgrading. I have a Lenovo Y500 with an i5-3230M, 8 gigs of ram, 750M, and a slow as fuck HDD.

I'm looking at a Y50 with an i7-4720HQ, a hybrid (1000+8) HDD, and 960M.

My overall feeling though is that's it's not gonna be much of an upgrade to speak of, and I would really like it for Nvidia to talk about what's happening early next year with their mobile cards, because I probably should wait it out for 6-9 months.

960M is only very marginally better than a 860M, right?

If so, that's a shame.

It's literally a slightly overclocked 860M. The GTX 965M is the 860M's true successor.

You'd be going from a dual to a quad core, and from a 750M to a GPU that's easily 2x as fast at 1080p.

I dunno sounds like a huge upgrade, to me.

Hi guys,

someone kindly suggested this laptop to me, here's the specs, I like it very much, but I had a couple of questions:

Intel Core i5 5200U (2.20GHz)
8GB Memory 1TB HDD
Intel HD Graphics 5500
1366 x 768
Windows 8.1
DVD±R/RW
15"6' screen
$529

How is the value on this? Should I try to find a better price for these kinds of specs?

Is there an easy way to find one with a smaller screen and (or or, but preferably and) no DVD drive? I was thinking that cutting out those things (especially the screen size) could save some money, and I'd actually prefer one a little smaller. If anybody could point me to a laptop like that, that would be even better, but tips about how to search for similar specs would be appreciated.

Mainly just wanted some feedback on those questions about it.

What is the best workstation in the market right now?

Likely Quadro.

Why not go with the latest Precision line?

Good specs, for a basic non-gaming laptop, yeah.

If you want to search for cheaper laptops use the Newegg filters.

Dell's Precision and whatever HP is doing these days.

Hi everyone,

Been looking for a laptop. I would love your suggestions

Location: Canada
Budget: $1000-$1800
Size: 14-15"
Usage: Gaming (Paradox games like EU4, I'm looking forward to that new Stellaris game, Fallout NV with mods, maybe GTA, indie games) and Photoshop

I wanna watch Criterion blu rays but it's not the most important thing :3 Also, please be light; I move around a lot.

Thanks for the help guys! This is the first time I'm buying a laptop it's like an entirely different world

Dell's Precision and whatever HP is doing these days.
The latest Precision is sadly somewhat old, since for some reason Dell hasn't updated either the M4x00 or the M6x00 lines in over 2 years, and the prices haven't exactly adjusted accordingly. This annoys me because my M6700 is already 3 years old and could definitely use a new one
or a dock that supports the AW Graphics Amplifier
.

On an unrelated note, is the Y50 the best ~$1000 gaming laptop around? (I assume there aren't any with a 965M around that price)

At under $1,200, that GE62 is an amazing deal.

Soooooo

Staples claimed that, despite being in stock when ordering, that they were out of stock. And would not be back in stock for some time. Thus did I decide to spend a bit more and get an open box GE62 with a bit more ram, but still around the best price for what was available last week from Newegg so I didn't have to give staples any money. It just arrived! Any ways to best test it, being open box and all?

Seems like the MSI GS60 would suit you best. Question is whether it'd be cheaper to buy it in Canada, or to maybe have one shipped from the States.

Cheapest Canadian SKU versus the identical US SKU. Or there's the 970M SKU in US.

Amazon's US to Canada shipping policy. What do you think?

Probably haven't updated, because Nvidia hasn't yet released any Quadro cards based on Maxwell, at least not in the mobile sector. The HP workstations are in a similar position. Still, a K4100M equipped machine would be faster than the K4000M you're used to operating.

Yes, the Y50 is the best in that bracket.

Is the value good?

I dunno. Value is a direct correlation of how its features would benefit you. You could probably drop down to this machine, without looking much build quality or performance. Or save $30 with this one, if you want to stick with Intel.

Pro: got one with an SSD

Con: a mere 30 days of warranty

How much did OB save you vs a new one?

Nothing to do to test, other than game.

Saved about $200 for what a new one is going for currently. Only issue I found was that it had been wiped down to just windows without quite a few drivers, but now that it's fixed I'm feeling pretty good.

would like to know about gigabyte laptops. couple i was looking at are

would appreciate any input. trying to keep around 1500-1700 with an ssd and 970m. msi ghost series seems to be very popular from looking around

Gigabyte laptops are known to have issues with CPU throttling. Buy the equivalent MSI or Clevo and be happy.

I'm in the market for a new laptop.

country: USA
budget: aiming for whatever gets me the most bang for my buck in the $1000-$1500 range; willing to go higher for a good enough reason
size: preferably 17" screen or so; 15-18" range is acceptable
screen resolution: 1080p60 or better
battery life, fan noise, weight: not a concern

The main usage of this setup will be video streaming and recording via USB capture cards and webcams, preferably at 1080p60 (barring internet bandwidth limitations). PC gaming performance is not a priority. As long as I can output a video preview to the laptop LCD and an external monitor/projector at 1080p60 with no issues I don't really care about the GPU performance otherwise.

Specific things I'm looking for, in order from most to least important:

- upper-end CPU (most important factor for streaming)
- at least 4 USB ports total, 2 or more of which must be USB 3.0
- 3.5mm stereo line-in and out
- HDMI out (an additional VGA out would also be a nice bonus, but I assume that's mostly phased out by now)
- cooling that's good enough to handle streaming events that last literally all day
- eSATA port (would much rather use SATA for storage than USB)
- mid-range GPU (PC gaming is not a huge priority)
- Windows 10 (I'd rather start working out the new-OS kinks in my setup now than wait to upgrade later)
- 500+ GB disk drive (preferably SSD, but not necessary)
- 8+ GB RAM (more than willing to skimp on this and buy aftermarket)
- SD card slot
- optical drive

I figure the choice of Windows 10 may be something that limits my selection. I'd be willing to pick up a Win8 model if I can be assured that it's relatively painless to upgrade it out of the box. I know a new OS has its share of growing pains, but I'm interested in moving forward and working through those now. Even if it turns out to be a pain, I can still rely on my current Win7 machine for a little while longer as Win10 drivers and compatibility for my current equipment/software improves.

One concern I have with laptops is USB bandwidth limitations. My streaming equipment consists of one USB 3.0 capture card (1080p60 4:2:2 YUY2 with no forced hardware x264 encoding) plus 2 or 3 USB 2.0 webcams. I'm unsure how much I should worry, if at all, about being able to support all of those devices at once.

My current laptop tends to run between 85-90 degrees C while streaming for long periods of time. That's lower than the stated max of 100 C for the processor (i7-2630 QM), but it's always struck me as a little close for comfort.

Are glossy and/or touch screens still in vogue for laptops? Can't say I care for those.

Sorry if this has already been asked before, I was planning to read through the thread to see if it had but I didn't realise how long it was. I'm heading to america next month for a holiday from the UK. I was thinking about buying a laptop while I am out there as I am pretty sure it's cheaper than buying one in the UK from what I have seen. If I did that, does anyone know if it would work with UK power plugs if I bought one? I have no idea if american laptops have issues if they're plugged into a UK power supply. I think I remember years ago a computer of my friends dying because he got it from america and plugged it in at home. I just wanted to make sure before I thought about buying one. Sorry again if it's been asked before and if I asked a dumb question.

Is anyone familiar with the build/display quality of Gigabyte laptops? I'm not familiar with them, but I was considering getting this machine:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z9VFVIQ/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Is it a decent rig for the money, or should I consider something else? Thanks!

Overall Gigabyte laptops seem decent, but they tend to run hot and loud when gaming due to the thin and lite chassis.
If you want something not as loud but just as powerful you guys might want to look at CLEVO/SAGER laptops they are usually much cheaper and perform just as well if not better than other thin and lite series laptops.

Hello all,

I am looking to get a new gaming laptop pretty soon and am looking for recommendations.

This is what I have been using, it has served me well, but something broke inside it (years ago) and it sounds like a lawnmower. I would like something that is better than that.

Country where it will be purchased: USA.
Maximum budget: $1000, the cheaper the better.
Max size: I would like 15" and lightweight, but I'm flexible.
Planned usage: Mainly gaming, I want to play XCOM 2 and Fallout 4 specifically, also Photoshop.
I would like it to have Windows 10, if they even come with that already.

Wondering if someone can help.

I've had intermittend frame rate drops on my laptop for a few months now.

It's a 3 year old laptop but it should'nt be lagging at all in those games.

680m GTX
i7, 2.7ghz
16Gb RAM
Win10 x64

I'm running both DOTA2 and Heroes of the Storm at smooth 60 fps, and then it'll drop to around 15-20 fps for maybe a full minute before getting back to normal.

Any ideas?

Lenovo Y50? Comes with Windows 8.1 but upgrades to Windows 10 quite well.

Throttling. Check your CPU and GPU temperatures.

Right, and the Precision line is still the best mobile workstation around, but at this point I don't think I would recommend investing $2k+ on 2 year old hardware with a GPU that performs like a 860M/770M at best unless you absolutely need a Quadro.

Good to know on the Y50 btw, since I just recommended one :P

It's a good deal.

I ended up getting it. Beautiful laptop. Only problem I am having is the track pad. It does not seem very responsive and scrolling can hang up. I upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as I got the laptop so not sure if it is a driver issue or what.

Acer Aspite V15 Nitro.

Hello everyone, I am searching for a new laptop.

Location: US
Budget: $1000
Size: 14-15"
Usage: Some gaming, but mostly for software development. I do a lot of back end development with resource-heavy processes, and I need to operate within many different Windows at once. So a nice chunk of RAM would be great. I am hoping to get into game development so a discrete GPU would be nice (but doesn't have to be God-tier).

I'd prefer a sleeker laptop, as I carry it around a lot. Not tiny thin though. Windows OS only.

I currently have an ASUS Q501LA, which has a 15.6", 1080p touchscreen, i5 4200U CPU, 6GB of RAM and a 750GB 5400 RPM HDD. It was a Best Buy only unit i got refurbished for $600. New laptop does not need to be touch, but I'd like it to be a nice improvement.

I've been looking at the Lenovo Y50. I am also getting my Masters in Software Engineering, so I get a student discount from Lenovo, which keeps it under budget. I've heard bad things about the display and the HDD for non-gaming purposes. I was also looking at the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71, which seems great but looks really bulky.

The reason I've been looking at gaming laptops is they seem to be the only ones with a lot of RAM and a discrete GPU. Software development comes first though.

Looking for a laptop. I'm lost on where to even start. It is for college and note taking, watching movies/Netflix on my downtime. It is absolutely not for gaming at all. I prefer it if was windows (10). Best laptop for college? My budget is around $600-$800. I assume that a good price point if it isn't for gaming? It is for IT.

Country where it will be purchased: Canada
Maximum budget: $1000ish, the cheaper the better.
Max size: 15-17 inches
OS: Windows only.
Planned usage: I'm in a program learning 3D Animation and I need a laptop that can run Maya well. I know next to nothing about what specs are good but I know that gaming laptops are powerful enough for the job. I'm not a PC gamer but I wouldn't mind being able to run PC games on ultra settings if I ever wanna.

I've been looking into MSI laptops but I see a lot of comments how they heat up noticeably but they tend to be the more powerful laptops out there. Other than that I haven't really looked into it much.

If anyone could share some guidance, that would be great.

Only the 2014 Y50 has a crap screen. The 2015 Y50 comes with an IPS and it's pretty decent.
Y50 model numbers starting with 5944 are all 2015 models. Model 59440646 is the model I have which I recommend. The SSHD is ok once you set up Intel Rapid Storage, and overall it should have no problem handling software development.

I've been looking into a few things, and I'm thinking on an Aorus X5. SLI 965Ms in a 15" yet slim package is looking pretty good for me. Only thing putting me off is having to make sacrifices to play at native res since they've thrown a 3k screen in there (albeit with G-Sync)

Anyone got any thoughts on a 15" power laptop? I don't really have a budget. Power would be the biggest thing, followed by slimness and portibility. Noise and heat would be bigger concerns than battery life (although not a big deal if I could get more power for the money).

Was also considering the Razer Blade, but since they're not officially sold over here in the UK, I kinda took it out of the running as it could be a bitch if I ever need to return it under warranty.

Hey guys I have just bought a gaming laptop for the first time and I have a question. Do you have to enable vsync with everything? Or is there another way around to prevent screen tearing because without it I get screen tearing everywhere.
