In addition to revamping the game's leveling system for The Taken King and a host of other changes, the developers are "pivoting" from how they've conveyed Destiny's story in the past. With a reinvigorated focus on quest givers and cutscenes sprinkled throughout the experience, The Taken King is hoping to tell a focused and direct story for fans of Bungie's universe. We spoke to The Taken King's creative director Luke Smith and executive producer Mark Noseworthy about lessons from Destiny's past, the importance of Cayde-6, and the changes to Ghost.

I'm not sorry for the video player

Being that there really wasn't a story, just a few badly stitched together scenarios, I hope this takes the game in the right direction. I remain cautiously pessimistic.

My gut is telling me bungie will deliver with the storytelling this time around... I just hope for skippable cutscenes.

This is good. Brings the focus back to the story of Destiny as opposed to people just grinding for hundreds of hours trying to get their first gjallarhorn. I was talking with a younger cousin, he's only like 12 but has like 791 hours supposedly on Destiny in just a few months. He didn't care about the story, the characters, the music, anything. He only just grinded with friends. This is a sharp contrast to Halo, where the story drove the game almost as much as the multiplayer. TTK seems like it's back to world building for the Destiny universe and I hope they carry it into Destiny 2. I'm jumping in with TTK too.

Haha, using Fatebringer in one of those clips fighting the new enemies? Oh Bungie...

Also that one assault rifle looks like a futuristic MP 44. Can't wait for this. I really think Bungie is going to deliver the goods this time.

Wait they're claiming they've conveyed a story in the past?

Destiny (and history) tells me...........they will mess this up somehow.

Made it 8 seconds into the video before I involuntarily said "fuck off" at my phone. Amazing these dudes can still sound so pretentious about the game after the wretched dogshit that was the story in vanilla Destiny. I'm taking all this story improvement talk with a huge grain of salt because they've completely lied about the story before. It's one thing for a game to ship and online doesn't work; it's impossible to test every aspect of that. When your game ships with one of the most garbage stories in modern AAA gaming, you know it and just don't give care.

Jesus get some fresh air you seem upset

The way they are incorporating ghost to be able to scan environmental objects to get optional bits of story and lore is cool. Very Metroid Prime'ish but the game will benefit from these little things. Seems like such a no brainer when you think about it too.

I can understand getting burned by vanilla destiny at launch, but everything we've heard about taken king has been good news

Yeah, they're obviously going to say things that sound good. They did the same for the base game. Remember "We like to tell big stories and we want people to put the Destiny universe on the same shelf they put Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars"? They said that pre-release and still delivered trash. I'm not sure why their words on the topic would be meaningful now.

Honestly, I think the gameplay changes they're making to the game sound great, but I couldn't be more skeptical about them putting out a good story. Kudos to them if they manage to trick people with this story/legend/blahblahblah talk a second time.

Nice. I love the new direction. I'll say this about Destiny despite its issues...it has an awesome community. Everyone was so willing to show me the ropes in VOG. I recommend jumping back in like I did a week ago...such a solid game. And the crucible...love it!

I feel like the circumstances are different this time though. The original story was cut out because (apparently) it wasn't very good, and so they had to stitch together a story last minute. This time they had time to plan more and have listened to feedback from fans

I've looked into it, and you can only buy the solus version of The Taken King if you own The Dark Below and House of Wolves, that's £35. Then The Taken King is £40.

If anybody thinks it's reasonable to pay £75 on top of the base game price to make the game not shit they are either allergic to money or stupid.

That is one thing I really wanted when I popped in Destiny for the first time was great storytelling and it wasn't there. Glad they are focusing on it this time around and continue it going forward because Destiny feels so lifeless right now.

Why not get the Legendary Edition then? Comes with the base game, both expacs, and TK. Unless that isn't available across the pond. I don't buy physical anyway, so I have no clue what TK status is, or if you even need the two expansions to play TK.

There is a retail version with the base game, both expansions, and TTK for $60. Not sure what it costs over there.

Or you just trade in your vanilla disc and buy the physical "legendary edition" which comes with vanilla destiny, dark below, house of wolves AND taken king. for 45 pounds.

focused and direct story

Maybe I'm being super cynical but this looks to me like it's going to be only a few missions with some exposition thrown in and short cutscenes...
