Kotaku flops hard on Japanese sales comprehension

The game has sold less than 1000 copies, according to this Kotaku article. Did not manage to enter the top 50 either.

I'd call it an announced bombing...

Mod Abuse Edit:

Earth to Kotaku - Devil's Third is an Amazon Japan exclusive for Japanese retail and is not tracked by the major sales trackers.

Pretty sure neither Media Create or Famitsu track Amazon.co.jp sales, so I'm not sure where Kotaku got any number?

Pretty sure the fail here is Kotaku's for thinking that the chart they use to reference tracks Amazon of japan.

Also the game likely bombed but had a "sold out" on amazon japan, though I assume that was because of the low quantity that was made.

Isn't the game actually sold out on amazon.jp? I mean if it sold the first shipment then more power to them, doesn't sound bad considering the presumably low expectations.

Lowest number in the charts is 1006 copies and since it didn't enter they assumed it sold less than that, without knowing that m-c/famitsu doesn't track Amazon sales. It could've sold just 1 copy, but also 2000 copies. Kotaku is gonna Kotaku.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Nintendo knew this was going to flop, it was exclusive to one online retailer.

But it's Amazon exclusive. So if it didn't enter the charts, I think its safe to assume it did sell less than 1006 copies. Certainly wouldn't be 2000 going by what you're saying since Amazon is the only place it can be bought.

The charts don't track amazon sales at all. Devils Third sales numbers cannot be derived from said charts.

Hmm, so maybe they can get some money out of it somehow, if they play it carefully.

I doubt it... then again, we have no idea just how much money Nintendo spent on the game. But I guess it'd have to be pretty successful for Nintendo to fully recoup their investment, and I don't see that happening (despite the positive Amazon reviews, which are slightly more reliable than Famitsu score when it comes to gauging quality ;)).
