all I saw there was that he thought it was too wacky I guess... again... who cares?
I grew up laughing my ass off at the nazis screaming "main layben" and "skuffaffel", as the Americans recording the voice overs try to say "mein Leben" and "Schutzstaffel", with the low sound fidelity not helping them either
I grew up fighting Mecha Hitler... that looked like a fucking South Park parody.
"oh no, Wolfenstein 2 was a bit too wacky!"
who cares? in the first one they go to a secret Jewish scifi cave... like... what?
Wolfenstein was always dumb as fuck.
it never was a cornerstone IP. Wolfenstein was always B-tier and was never a huge hit.
the original 2 Wolfenstein games are so unknown, people probably don't even know they exist.
Wolfenstein 3D was revolutionary, but wasn't a big title compared to other games of its time. I think it sold less units than Mario Paint sold in europe alone lol.
the only sales numbers I can find is a combined 100k in 1993 of Wolfenstein 3D and its sequel (which probably most people also don't know exists) Spear of Destiny.
and that was the last Wolfenstein game iD ever made. they since completely outsourced the development of new games and focussed on other titles themselves.
Wolfenstein 3D basically helped them get some minor success, which they then used to make other games. it was a stepping stone for them, not a corner stone.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein sold decently well, but also wasn't a huge title.
and the sequel completely flopped.
the fact that Machine Games' titles were as successful as they were was honestly surprising to me.
and even that was not a super massive hit. but still a surprisingly good performance for the series. and I think the by far most successful game of the franchise
