[Kotaku] Wolfenstein 3 is in development at MachineGames

They need to bring back the "men's adventure", Indiana Jones type tone and make it less deathly serious.

Yes, I know, Nazis bad, but if it's one thing that's been lost it's WW2 media that wasn't quite as deathly serious and could be more for fun or just approaching it from a historical perspective than so heavily politicized, I was thinking back to a game I played as a kid called Prisoner of War on the original Xbox, that fun sort of history channel vibe of WW2, you either rarely or never see that anymore.

Depends on the direction Machine Games are told to make the game in, they can make a good Wolfenstein but the last 2 they made were not in the good category, RTCW is still the goat for me, brilliant game released well over 20 years now, which is becoming a popular saying for a lot of ip's these days lol.

SMH at this thread, Youngbloods was the best one, I'm sorry you guys don't have friends to play with, co-op games are a great thing. The level design alone makes Youngbloods the best MachineGames Wolfenstein.

Was Wolfenstein II still good? I'm not sure when the reboot actually went down the tubes.
New Colossus is great shit. The problem is the story they started with back in 2009 that was clearly hinting at Nazis winning WW2 and coming to America didn't jive with a lot of people who seemed to think it was suddenly about killing Trump supporters

Gotta dial it back to the tone of their first one. New Colossus went off the rails with 9 months pregnant naked lady covered in blood acting like Rambo and all the other performative nonsense.

Too much. Fire the nutjobs and just be cool.

That scene is a bit like the scene in One Battle After Another. I wonder if the movie was inspired by the game.

At least this seems ridiculous enough that you kind of just laugh at it. One Battle After Another was a comparatively turgid slog that was also an incredibly upsetting reminder that PTA isn't the guy who directed Boogie Nights or There Will Be Blood anymore.

Though this is off-topic, I guess.

2 has some great aspects, and some really frustrating aspects. Wild that this will be over 10 years later. God damn game development takes so long now

Heavily politicized? Less deathly serious? I'm sorry, the game where B.J. Blackowicz's head was cut-off, transplanted to a bio-engineered super soldier's body? Hitler in space? The game with sumerian space jew lunar bases, flying saucers, and advanced robotics and fucked up sophisticated armor?

It's even more over the top and ridiculous than any Indiana Jones media. Sometimes I feel like you guys don't play the same games.

I liked The New Order when it came out but didn't really hold up to my memory on a recent replay. I ended up enjoying The Old Blood more due to brevity.

Not really sure about this dev at this point and thought Indiana Jones was an absolute bore. We'll see...
Wolfenstein is all about bad ass solders and an amazing yet tricky environments, it's not about villains drinking human blood and other unworldy stuff. The next game must stick to it's root, if Doom did great this generation so do other id games.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy these - minus the sisters' co-op game.

That said, and I need to get this off my chest, they're enjoyable mainly for the atmosphere and the absolutely batshit stories, because, let's be honest, when it comes to the actual shooting and general gameplay, they're… not good.

I approached them as cinematic, story-heavy experiences, and that worked for me. Had I gone in expecting solid, satisfying shooting mechanics, I would've walked away disappointed.

They're fun due to their pulp-y nature and that's pretty much it.

The stories may have been over the top but, starting with New Colossus, the devs went all-in on woke, sjw bullshit, and that element of it they took very serious. I think that's what Red Crayon Aristocrat Red Crayon Aristocrat is talking about.

The old PS1 Medal of Honor games were like this. And Frontline.

Perfidia was portrayed as a terrible self-centered psycho, including in that pregnant shooting range scene.

Wolfenstein on the other hand was trying to glorify the pregnant naked lady in combat.

Doom, Duke Nukem and Wolfestein are my all time favorite FPS and shooter from the 90's. But I dont trust the modern developers this days if they can make a decent Wolfenstein game. The last modern Wolfenstein game, I did not enjoy it.

And yet the games treated it more serious, you visit a concentration camp in The New Order, as the series went on, they started referencing current events more, Young Blood had some letter you could find about a rejected idea to "build a wall" around the Reich which is said to be so stupid an idea the person who proposed it isn't fit to clean toilets, har har har.

Stuff like that takes all the fun out of it, Return To Castle Wolfenstein meanwhile didn't have any of that shit, that's what they need to go back to, you can portray the Nazis as evil villains without constantly beating us over the head with "SEE, SEE, IT'S JUST LIKE TODAY!"

A least there are tits. I forgot that there were tits.

What was woke and sjw bullshit? Do detail.

Look it up yourself, or don't. I'm not here to convince you. Just trying to clarify homie's perspective.

They just need to cut out the woke bullshit and channel the same tone as the original game.

Maybe use some old Pulp novels like Doc Savage, etc for inspiration.
Yup, pulpy is exactly the word to use, it needs to go back to that tone.

The world's too serious a fucking place now for you to try to have your cake and eat it too and both have nazi robots and some kind of commentary on the reality of nazism.

Ok so nothing substantial I gather, probably next to the whiny "woke" lists that include Elden ring too.

A commentary on reality of nazism... with Hitler in space :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This one has yet to be topped and you can get on steam for 5 bucks.

It is gloriously pulpy and still holds up. Switches from Occult to Sci Fi, back and forth.

Perfect Wolfenstein game.

The character of Grace was pretty bad dude. I would've much rather had a Hendrix equivalent like in New Order. Like let me hang out with newcomers Marvin (Gaye) or John Lennon. They had something going with the alt history with music thing.

Really not my favorite character in the lineup for sure, but she was never meant to be likeable. She starts with a crew of strangers, unlike Caroline's crew. Context wise, she saw too fucking much, in a place where Nazi controls America and have been enslaving or exterminating black peoples like pests. That alone is quite anti-thesis to "woke", how many devs would even put that kind of lore in a game nowadays?

She's dealing with that angrily, as I would imagine anyone going through that shit would probably have lost it. This is a person who has seen America give up and surrender and embrace the very ideals they were fighting against. She saw New York City go boom with a nuke and then America turning around and saying "meet the new management guys! It's gonna be cool!"

Constant state of wariness and resistance is typically not a good combo for "likeable". Also a reflection of Black panthers which started in the 60's but there were similar groups even before that. So yes, she's a rude, hostile bitch. She pushes people to get them to show their commitment to fighting the Nazis because she doubts most of the crew. She's also key to Sigrun having a bully and snap, which was very satisfying.

Like, I don't really care about her character so I feel like I'm wasting my time here for playing devil's advocate but I think Machinegames went too far with the Freudian excuse trope and this character while having the writing less good than the previous games. They could have pulled it off better if they had tweaked her down a notch. I still don't think this character alone warrants "woke" sticker slap on it. It's worth playing while not as good as its predecessors. Would I prefer J over her? Anytime of the day of course. Should they write a lineup of characters that are more fledged and less edgy in wolfenstein 3? Let's hope.

I tried all of Machine Games' Wolfenstein games, non of them clicked for me. The one I liked the most was the Old Blood. Something about the aiming controls being too floaty for me.

Nah this scene is just hilarious lol. You know it's from a certain era of thinking but, it's one of those it's so bad it's good.

I didn't mind Wolfenstien 2. The ai was a little unbalanced in some parts but it was alright. Young Blood was hot garbage tho.....

Very good news, hopefully the part with the dreadful women was just a slip-up.

The last entries were so bad, that I have no hope for this IP and Machine Games.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood was such a pile of excrement...

Youngblood was bad, but the others are great.

You guys know that was Arkane Lyon, right? So was Cyberpilot.

Yes, MG also worked on both but it's my understanding Lyon was the main dev and the 1st listed director was an Arkane employee.

Anywho, loved TNO and New Colossus so excited for this. Hopefully there's more Indy coming too.

So much for that Indiana Jones sequel talk from last year...

They need to let Indy saturate. Great Circle has that much clout that it can stay afloat and relevant enough for years. Everyone already knows it's the next best thing to the trilogy and Fate of Atlantis etc. Let them sit on it.

New Order and Old Blood DLC were pretty awesome. New Colossous was bad (gun play good, story was vomit as well as the characters). Youngblood was just bad.

How about, listen close, we get a Wolf-esque shooter/action adventure game where we get to kill filthy collectivisits/Communists? You know, modern civilizations real enemy?

Like the main Characters could be Johnny Kulak or something. He had friends at Katerine, Warsaw Uprising and his pops fought Lenin on the Vistula.

Something like that.

Unpopular opinion, according to this thread:

I enjoyed every single entry of the new Wolfenstein games, yes, even The Old Blood and Young Blood. It was fun playing a braindead nazi killing gore shooter with a friend.

If I had to rank them from fun to not so much fun it would be New Order, New Colossus, Old Blood, Young Blood. But every game was still worth playing.

Definitely looking forward to a new game!

The 2nd game was a mixed bag for me, and their work with Arkane on Youngblood was cringe storytelling that did nothing for me.

Indy was a solid game though, so I'm 50/50 this could be worth it.
