CNN poll : Donald Trump now competitive in general election

Washington (CNN) Since announcing his campaign in late June, Donald Trump has quickly leapt to the top of the Republican field, leading recent polls nationally, in Iowa and in New Hampshire. And now, for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, his gains among the Republican Party have boosted him enough to be competitive in the general election.

The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points, a dramatic tightening since July. Trump is the one of three Republican candidates who have been matched against Clinton multiple times in CNN/ORC polling to significantly whittle the gap between himself and the Democratic frontrunner. He trailed Clinton by 16 points in a July poll, and narrowed that gap by boosting his standing among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (from 67% support in July to 79% now), men (from 46% in July to 53% now) and white voters (from 50% to 55%).

Amazing. At the very least the future of the country looks to be very interesting. We've already kind of approached a level of celebrity politicians. This just seems like the natural evolution.

This fucking country. It's like the people here really want to burn this place to the ground.

Imagine if Trump was literally president. Jesus FUCK.

Hello.

Idk man

GAF told me none of this matters

Polls are a great snapshot of a certain time, but remember, even Gallup was predicting Romney might actually beat Obama. I wouldn't put too much stock into GAF, my own opinion means jackshit, but election night is very different than opinion polls, especially a year out. Donald Trump has completely alienated the Hispanic vote, the woman vote, he's not going to win on white men, white conservatives alone. I mean at times in 2012 people like Rick Santorum polled well.

I'm not necessarily saying Donald Trump is a bad guy, his firebrand personality is refreshing in politics, but he just doesn't have the wide support needed in 2016 America. It's why even though Sanders is polling so well among Democrats, but he wouldn't be able to secure enough conservative votes or GOP votes a candidate like Hillary would get. It is disheartening to hear for the past 3+ years that this election is Hillary Clinton's to lose. I know some people who are going to vote for her without knowing or caring about a single thing regarding her policies or what she stands for.

I'm half expecting WW3 if Trump ends up the president. He would be stupid enough to send nukes somewhere that pisses him off.

Trump winning the GOP primary?

Very possible.

Trump winning against Hillary, Bernie or Joe in the general?

Highly unlikely.

"Competitive in general election" may be a bit generous. It's not a popular vote remember. This is the trap a lot of commentators fell into with Obama v Romney.

How is he polling in the swing states against likely Democratic contenders?

I thought it was impossible for a Republican to be competitive in the presidential race because of maths? Gaf told me this!

Hilary is a sinking ship and not the right person to face off against Trump.

This has to be a joke right? We are all just voting for him in these polls out of jest right?

There are a lot of young people who want to see it done "for the Lulz", to be contrarian to the Hilary/Bush inevitability narrative, because he's "Honest", and because they flat out don't like Mexicans.

It's way past time that those in the field start taking him seriously and start poking holes in the facade.

This is disturbing. Obviously a shit ton has to happen before the time these things start to really matter. Still disturbing. Hopefully we'll see a re-alignment of the large democratic candidate (whoever that is) lead once the Dems start having their own debates.

Real life has become (always been?) a super dark comedy, I'm stuck in an infinite loop of laughing and then feeling bad for laughing at every new thing that happens along Trumps path to the presidency.

Do people in America know what their president actually does? Because I feel like that's the kind of job you want some kind of qualification for.

Trump is a better option than Hilary. But Sanders needs to become President.

No, he's really not. He's a slimy misogynistic and racist businessman whose policies are starting to show that his ideas are perhaps even worse than the normal GOP policies.

You're not seriously buying his 'character' are you? The man is highly intelligent an educated and a ridiculous businessman. He's also a media personality, who knows how to get people riled up, just look at 2012 when he was almost singlehandedly responsible for getting Obama to release the birth certificate. What makes you think he'd just send nukes somewhere because he's stupid enough? I still don't know what his end game is though. Maybe he knows he has enough money, his kids are grown, why not just go balls to the wall saying crazy stuff, being a firebrand politician, trying to get votes.

They expect a president to be a King/Dictator to be able to do anything they want. Yet when they do anything they want (executive orders) they hate it.

So in reality America has no clue what they want the presidency to do.

Hillary clinton needs to step her game up quick, the fact that there isn't even a criminal investigation going on concerning her servers with all those emails just goes to show you how fucking gullible most American voters are.

Doesn't mean shit. Still I'm glad he's getting people who dont follow politics like they should to actually pay attention.

Trump is a better option than Hilary.

No he absolutely isn't, in any way. I don't even understand how anybody could think that. What policy-making experience does he have? What diplomatic experience? Why would you give such a vital job to somebody who's never been involved with governance for a single second of his life?
