Regal Cinemas starts checking bags ...

They do this in Thailand and it's a non issue. It takes all of 1 second to show them what is in your bag. I personally don't have a problem with it.

Oh security issues. I missed that. Thought they were just looking for recording devices. Still don't have a problem with it if it makes things safer.

A thread about an ineffective and honestly inconvenient new policy in the name of paying lip service to safety that might result in more expensive movie tockets to boot?

This is fear mongering PR that will do nothing to save anyone's life.

Btw the least you could do is admit you assaulted someone.

I gave an example. It's not as simple as it used to be.

This happened to me a few weeks back. I was sweating bullets because I had contraband in my backpack. They looked inside and said it was fine, though, since they were only checking for weapons.

I would actually be more okay with this if they proved they were doing this out of people's safety and required scanners and pat downs along with bag checks. For anyone who really wants to shoot up a theater, all this says is that they should stick their gun in their waist band. The method they propose is more efficient at stopping people looking to sneak in drinks than it is at stopping would-be criminals.

I'm not going to - regardless of how fucked up concession prices are - pretend that I'm entitled to sneak in food or drinks into a theater. I just wished that if they were going to stick to this narrative of it being for our benefit they would commit to it hard (raising ticket prices to offset the price of hiring more security even at the cost of losing customers, etc). Even if it lost them some theater goers, it would unequivocally send the message that they are committed to security regardless of what financial hit they take.

Having some teenager glance in people's purses won't do shit.

I think they're trying to kill two birds. Searching bags isn't going to stop a determined killer who will either begin his rampage at the ticket counter or will wear a windbreaker over his holstered guns, so the only thing this will affect is bringing in snacks from outside. I can't smuggle in bags of hot, buttered popcorn or fountain sodas for my wife and daughter, so I end up buying plenty of concessions, but I'll sneak in candy. It's almost unconscionable the prices they charge. $4 for a box of M&Ms? I think lowering the concession prices would result in higher volume sales. I have to make a separate purchase of the candy anyway, the current system just ensures it's from a store down the block. Your business model features 300% upcharges and selling inedible amounts of food and drink, adding paranoid inconvenience is just going to keep me at home.

sometimes i love sneaking in food more than watching the actual movie, this is the only place i am comfortable admitting it

my greatest heist was sneaking in a wet smothered (mojada style) fire steak burrito and a giant monster energy drink while watching mad max, it was glorious

my friend has snuck in an entire pizza, that man is truly legend

I took in some carne asada fries once. It was great.

Went to go see American Ultra last night and they checked bae's bag. I thought they were cracking down on that illicit candy, then she pointed out the whole shooting stuff. I felt dumb.

I understand why, but if some jackass wants to shoot up a cinema, then frankly, unfortunately, these measures won't stop them. It won't change anything.

The best they could do is enforce a total ban on weapons and set up metal detectors and/or post security guards.

But this is a fucking cinema we're talking about. It'll cost a lot of money and moviegoers will have to pay for it.

Though of course America could enforce stricter gun laws and implement more safeguards such as background screenings and mental health evaluations, but that'd be too rational.

let's be real, this is an attack on grocery store candy under the guise of safety.

I assaulted someone who ran after asking if he was sitting there. Keep stretching.
I almost can't believe that you can justify assaulting someone for doing something completely unrelated to another thing. A bombing happened a year prior in a different location that wasn't a theater and the paranoia in your brain triggered that and instead of trying to think of a plausible reason you take the law into yourself which again no real probable cause even if you were and you physically assault the man.

What you did was not rational thinking and it's mind boggling that this conversation is still going on and you are still trying to rationalize your assault and trying to justify that you had real cause because some did something that you didn't like and instead of being an adult about it and leaving if you felt uncomfortable you grabbed and pushed him.. You are lucky that he wasn't a mass murderer because if he was he wouldn't of grabbed the bag he would of blew you and everyone else up in the theater after you pissed him off some more but instead you terrified him, ruined his night and probably emotionally damaged the guy all because you can't control your shit.

With the recent theater shootings, my family doesn't really want to go into a theater ever again.

I suppose it makes sense that they are doing this.

It's their rules. If it's mainly to check for outside food, guess what, a lot of restaurants don't allow outside food or drinks. Why do you feel like you can do whatever you want at their venue?

The rate of violent crime is decreasing and yet fear of violence seems to be increasing.

How else are the cable news networks going to get ratings?

You have a better chance of being in a fatal car accident every day of the week than you do of being killed in a mass shooting.

Yet another reason not to go see movies in a theater. I can see movies from the comfort of my home, without brats and their cellphones talking all through it, having to pay $7 for a soda, $3 extra for 3D glasses, and with the ability to pause the movie and use the bathroom if I want to.

Going to a matinee with my wife and 3 kids is already around 40 bucks. I'll be damned if I'm paying another 20 dollars to have some water to drink while we watch. My daughter or wife usually brings a huge purse filled with waters and occasionally candy or quest bars for me. If my theater started checking bags I would go to another one.

Security issues my ass. They just want to stop you from bringing in snacks and are trying to pretend they're looking out for you.

From the article:
“Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America. Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theatres.”

and ...

"In a recent survey by research group C4, nearly 50% of moviegoers said they would pay $1 or more extra to support additional security measures in theaters. The issue for exhibitors is that installing metal detectors or arming security personnel could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars per location and would create problems in terms of seating people in a timely fashion."

This isn't about sneaking food in to the movies, either.

This is what we really need:

Not serious.

This sounds like bs to stop people from sneaking in food.

Anecdotally it seems like employees are being instructed to ignore any food or drink and only check for weapons. So seemingly it's really not about food. They still don't give a shit if you bring in food.

Don't let them fool you. This is to get you complacent with searches. In 6-12 months, then they'll start confiscating your candy.

The guy who checked my girl's purse said they are not looking for food. It was quick glance into her purse, they didn't actually touch the bag itself.

Took my mom to see Straight Outta Compton yesterday and they searched her purse. She had 2 bottled waters and a king size bag of M&Ms in there. They didn't seem to give a shit about that and nothing was said. I'm guessing if it was something hot they'd have mentioned, but those items didn't raise any eyebrows.

Still felt like an invasion of privacy that I didn't like to see. Not a fan of this policy.

Yeah i've really never understood paying 11$ to watch a movie with a bunch of inconsiderate assholes chewing food loudly, talking through a movie, and using their cell phones. like why the fuck do people still use theaters

couldn't possibly be for the giant fucking screen and powerful sound system.

or seeing a movie when it's released

Seeing a movie like Gravity in the theater was the oly reason to see it. Unless you have an Imax screen and soundvsystem at home.

So you at least admit you assaulted someone.

I really wish the kid called the cops on you.

You are sick humans. My understanding was he was arrested.

I don't know about US but in UK you're allowed to bring food in so long as it isn't hot. No hot food is because it smells.

They just don't shout that info to you because they like the idea people aren't sure.

I wish we had that rule here. Fucking movie theatres now selling nachos and shit, and you even have people here admitting to bringing fucking burritos to the movies. Those people are just the worst.

So, are they going to turn people away for having a few snacks in their bag? This is the only concern that I have.

I can bring my own food on the plane but not at my local theater? Sorry, I'm not having that.

I don't really mind. It's not like I ever bring snacks :P

Regardless, I highly doubt this type of searches would prevent a crazy person from killing people.

You are sick humans. My understanding was he was arrested.

We are sick? You assaulted somebody! If you were scared of the backpack you should have left the theater and inform the management of your concern. You're not a hero, you're not reasonable, you're just a paranoid bully.

Sick humans? For what not giving you kudos and bro fists for going all Rorschach in a movie theatre?

Btw do you have any news link to this kid's supposed arrest (also arrested for what? Having a bag and getting assaulted)? You'd think a bomb threat even a fake one one year after the marathon bombing would make news.
