Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

IGN said:
For their part, Phantom Pain’s story elements are at least well produced, with beautiful cinematography, and workmanlike performances from everyone, including Keifer Sutherland, who sadly has practically nothing to do as Big Boss. His inexplicable silence through even the most crucial story beats towards the end go beyond mere stoicism, and were positively jarring. Almost gone are the off-topic codec convos, climactic boss battles, and memorable character moments of Metal Gears past. Everyone seems to exist solely to walk on screen, deliver information, and then stand there dramatically.

Just as we feared :|

Really glad this is coming to PC. Scores looking good for what will be my first dive in the MGS universe but I will wait for user impressions first though.

You should at least watch those YouTube movie compilations of the games first.

It's incredibly disappointing to hear that the story is scaled back so significantly. Can't say I didn't see it coming, though. :(

Oh well, still completely stoked for the game, I'm sure it'll be great anyway. But the story was my most anticipated aspect of the game so my overall excitement just went down quite a bit.

I think this is fantastic news. Much of the fluff, fan service and backstory related content will likely be relegated to tapes, so people will have the freedom to either engage with that exposition as and when they feel or stay with the basic experience otherwise. Most importantly, the experience is going to be made of the players experience and thoughts rather than "Big Boss" as a character, which is far more interesting as an experience even if it means some awkward Half Life style moments with characters. Sounds good to me.

I would agree with you 99.9% of the time - this is good game design. The problem is that MGS defines 'cinematic movie games', and that's what I've always loved about the series, even as it frustrated me and broke all the rules of game pacing and player agency etc.

I wanted one more of those ludicrous games. Looks like we aren't getting one. And we do have plenty of the other kind of games, even if they're not as good as this one will be.

Do you want to watch the game or play it?

Would anyone be able to answer an MGS question? Its probably not got an answer other than "Voice actor changed" but why does Ocelote have a gruff Southern accent in MGS and MGS2 but in Snake Eater and Phantom Pain a very clear accent with no hint of gruffness? I understand he is much older in MGS 1-2 but still, he literally has a completely new way of talking and accent.

Being a terrible person and not reading reviews apart form the little recaps/+- and comments here and I'm a bit worried.

Obviously the game itself will play great. Ground Zeroes is a joy to play and you get hours and hours out of that one small island base so I'm not worried about the game part. I'm kinda worried about the story though, some say it's "complex" some say it's "sparse" and some say Kiefer barely talks, which was super expected but still very disappointing.

I guess after 4 with it's multiple super long cutscenes I'm spoiled. I like the long ass cutscenes of crazy shit happening and then the twists and explanations. I don't like having all that stuff shoved into audio tapes as an afterthought. It's not as bad as hiding your story in an out of game downloadable phone app but it's not what I want.

Anyway, can't really judge until I've got it and done all the missions.

Ignoring voice actor changes I'd guess that in MGS1 and 2 he's speaking English so has a southern accent for whatever reasons but in MGS3 he's supposed to be speaking Russian (it's just english for the player) and he's supposed to have been in Russia fro a while (I think?).

It does to me, which is why I wrote it. I still loved Witcher 3. But, I was really let down with how thin the main story was.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, 'cause I'm certainly not the first person to say it on here. It was mentioned in some reviews as well.

The IGN review. IIRC the same reviewer that is criticizing the weak MGSV story.

Reading the reviews, the cinematic nature of the game (and it's cinematics) is still intact and done with aplomb. What is lost is the codec cuts and over the top exposition mid game. Shifting those out to tapes seems pretty damn reasonable to me.

He's a spy. Faking his dialect is sort of his thing.

And I guess he's supposed to be speaking Russian for much of Snake Eater, anyway.

in the lead up to the finale, you need to spend an hour or two replaying older missions on a higher difficulty setting in order to unlock the last story missions.

Huh... Fuck...

Anyways... I liked Peace Walker, so I'm pretty sure I will like this.

I feel bad for all Peace Walker haters out there, though.
