Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

From IGN:

Thankfully though, it never wasted my time pretending to say more, as cut scenes were sparse and brief, so as to let me get back to playing.

Kojima, you've finally done it. I look forward to finishing a MGS game for the first time.

Day One.

EGM Now: "Narrative stones left unturned will disappoint superfans and sticklers."

This echoes IGN's review. The last thing I come to MGS games for is a lackluster story.
So did they or did they not have the whole ending? I thought review copies didn't have it. Or was that false info?

I'm glad to see the series evolve to such great gameplay heights but MGS without a focus on the story is not MGS.

Really disappointed to see some of the things we all feared were true.

That's fine. You just made it seem like that was the general critic opinion, which it wasn't.

Oh, no. I certainly wouldn't say it was the general consensus. Though I'm not the first person to say it, either, like a couple others are making out.

I was just let down with how underused and simple the Wild Hunt became and how little was done with Yen and Geralt's relationship. The second half of the game when Ciri really comes into play improved immensely 'cause I felt like she and Geralt had an actual relationship in the game. Whereas with Yen it felt like they just left it at "yeah, these two were into each other in the books" and really went nowhere and did nothing with it.

this perspective reminds me of bioshock plasmids

This game's graphics are stupid good. Shit, the Fox Engine was so worth it.

And it's open-world... ffffffuuuuuuuuu

Anyone else in the verge of tears because of the "sparse story"?

No. It's obviously going to be subjective between players. There's so many cutscenes in earlier games that even if they're scaled back considerably there's still probably enough. It's also the first instalment that's this size, so you're not going to be hitting that same kind of cutscene to gameplay to cutscene ratio. Other reviews are saying the story is good, so I wouldn't put all your stock in that one; though I will say it's obvious, again, that it won't be the same kind of storytelling with scenes of exposition running in circles.

Is it just me or are all these reviews making it sound like MGS V is the worst mainline MGS game ever made?

Sounds like too much grind and repetitiveness and really? replaying missions on hard and locking main missions behind more grind? as opposed to your usual MGS awesomeness with a cuhrayzee, fleshed out (Kojima-style) story.

Are people really upset and at the verge of tears for a game with currently a 96 metacritic and criticisms from a 10/10 review.

Boy, I'm going to need popcorn for the inevitable 8/8.5

A lot of people saying that some of these reviews complain about stuff and are still 10s are missing the point.

Games don't start off as a 10 and docked points for every negative element. If a reviewer likes a game so much that they are not bothered by any negative elements they can absolutely score it in any way they see fit.

LMAO at people getting all depressed over a few negatives.

It's understandable. I've always been concerned about an open world metal gear game and the way it would tell its story and it's pacing. No matter what though all of us MGS fans were gonna play this regardless of metacritic scores

Yeah it looks amazing. Especially for an open world 60fps game

I dont get why the graphics get a rating of 10 or so... yes its 60fps.. but cmon.. the rest looks so outdated.

A stable 60 FPS in an open world is certainly pretty impressive and could alone warrant a 10, not to mention that I don't think quite everyone will agree that it looks outdated (I don't, I think it looks pretty good).

Seriously? The game has 5 reviews on metacritic. It will undoubtly get 90+ but metacritic is pointless right now.

Really excited for this but the one thing that bugs me.

in the lead up to the finale, you need to spend an hour or two replaying older missions on a higher difficulty setting in order to unlock the last story missions.

Just why ?

Anyway its gonna be great.

Yeah. I really like how it looks and it runs better than any other open world console game.

GT YTube link was removed. Is it available on the main site yet?

Also, is it true that it's spoilerish? Wanna know since GT is my go-to first review.

Just watched it I won't say it's spolierish really and there isn't any new footage to show off aswell.

When those criticisms highlight how much different this game is compared to the entire series, well I can see why some people wouldn't like it.
