5 critics? LAAAAME

Haha it looks like all the salt and meltdowns will come from people who thought the game shouldn't get 9s and 10s Lol

This is what happens when you are going open world, story pacing and cinematic elements go to hell :/
Not necessarily when you look at something like The Witcher 3 where everything is fully voice acted and while most of it probably doesn't really need to be, it shows a level of detail that you normally won't see in a game as long as it.

At the end of the day it probably more boils down to the dispute between Kojima and Konami, as well as Konami leaving the AAA video game space, rather than open-world inherently limiting how much attention to detail he can fit in.

And to think some people thought the reviewers would give it low scores because they wouldn't "get" it lol

They never learn.

MGS4 was clearly the peak of overwrought, long-winded video game storytelling. So I think it was wise for them to evolve out of that into a more minimal narrative.

I can't say I wanted another 20 hour long talking anime... and I say this as a longtime MGS fan. It had its place and time, but I have been there, done that.

Though having said that, it will be very odd to have a Metal Gear that doesn't talk at you 20 minutes after every checkpoint. I will miss it, even at the same time that I'm over it.

Anyone else in the verge of tears because of the "sparse story"?

It is expanded upon in cassette tapes, but from what I know...

It makes the overarching story a lot easier to comprehend to the common layman.

Not to say it includes a lot of Metal Gear-esque shit that would never-ever fly elsewhere.

It seems like it will please most crowds and will be a title of much discussion.

EGM Now: "Narrative stones left unturned will disappoint superfans and sticklers."

This echoes IGN's review. The last thing I come to MGS games for is a lackluster story experience.

People aren't going to listen to the tapes. It's already a video game cliche and it won't be obvious enough. No matter the quality or what they add. I fucking hate Peace Walker and it took me till today to finally finish Ground Zeroes, but on lark I decided to listen to them and they make the entire story of these games infinitely better. Really shows how much better Kiefer is than Hayter too. Forced codec type calls would have been a better idea for series fans, but the series has to evolve I suppose. After watching Metal Gear Scanlon though I must say I'm up for a big budget real Metal Gear game that gets tot he point and is less long winded anime. By the time they got to 4 I was amazed at how fucking terrible a lot of MGS4's dialog was. I had to skip scenes because it was so painful.

MGS4 fans am cry

"However, where Phantom Pain’s gameplay systems are far richer and meatier than any the series has ever seen, its story feels insubstantial and woefully underdeveloped by comparison. It opens confidently, with Director Hideo Kojima ready to fully embrace the techno-fantasy, live-action military anime identity that Metal Gear has been courting for the better part of two decades. This spectacular opening establishes a mood and a bundle of plot-related questions that are more or less abandoned until the time comes, some 30-60 hours later (depending on which answers you’re seeking and how you play). Generally those answers are rushed and unsatisfying, lacking any real build-up or thematic relevance.

This is doubly disappointing in a series known for (sometimes clumsily and exhaustively) exploring its subject matter. The opposite is true here though. The Phantom Pain brings up topics like the personal cost of revenge, child soldiers, and torture to name a few, but it has positively nothing to say about any of them other than that they exist. Thankfully though, it never wasted my time pretending to say more, as cut scenes were sparse and brief, so as to let me get back to playing. As nice as that might be though, I’d rather have the “problem” that Guns of the Patriots had, where there were “too many” awesome moments and plot twists.

For their part, Phantom Pain’s story elements are at least well produced, with beautiful cinematography, and workmanlike performances from everyone, including Keifer Sutherland, who sadly has practically nothing to do as Big Boss. His inexplicable silence through even the most crucial story beats towards the end go beyond mere stoicism, and were positively jarring. Almost gone are the off-topic codec convos, climactic boss battles, and memorable character moments of Metal Gears past. Everyone seems to exist solely to walk on screen, deliver information, and then stand there dramatically."
Ugh, this is disappointing as hell.

I never listen to tapes and I won't here.

The story better deliver outside of them

Reading the reviews, the cinematic nature of the game (and it's cinematics) is still intact and done with aplomb. What is lost is the codec cuts and over the top exposition mid game. Shifting those out to tapes seems pretty damn reasonable to me.

It sounds to me like we've lost more than the codec calls (where I agree, they were expendable). If we don't have multiple hours of awesomely crafted and over-the-top cutscenes then it's a shame, imo.

Do you want to watch the game or play it?

Honestly, watching the cutscenes was always my favourite part of MGS. Never particularly cared for the gameplay until GZ. Can't imagine I was the only one.

That's fucking terrible if true. Just awful.

I had zero intention of picking this up until it went on sale. Now? Damn, guess I haven't been keeping up. People really seem to be liking it.
