Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Thats how i see it. Sry if dont agree with your vision...

the gamespot review mentions having to replay missions on a harder difficulty to unlock the final mission but at the bottom of the review it says

Peter has played every Metal Gear game there is, and spent almost 50 hours with The Phantom Pain for this review. His total completion percentage, after beating the main storyline and playing a few dozen side ops, amounted to 40 percent.

so if you do everything before moving on to the next main mission i bet you won't have to replay or grind anything. he only completed 40% of it.

So the french mag were right, sparse Story with everything on tapes, too much grind/farm etc... but great gameplay ? doesn't sound like 10 for me, 8.5/10 is more likely.

It's par for the course. It's not my favorite, but it's very well done.

Like I said though, the 80s tapes really make it for me. Adds a perfect surrealist vibe to some of the appropriately surreal scenes.

I'm just more interested in original music is why I asked. The series has always had scenes with memorable, thematic music so I hope to get that here as well.

I'm gonna wait on my own judgement before saying the story is sparse. YMMV probably explains that.

"Tackles taboo subjects with grace" is legitimately astounding after MGS4's B&B Corps. Solid, but forgettable boss fights followed by zoomed in shots of the chests and asses of female models while they moan until you shoot them and Drebin calls up with some "Dead babies, Snake. Super sad dead babies" shit. Lazy, misogynist, and intellectually-insulting from every angle.

Excited to actually play the game but this topic is a biohazard area now since people are apparently spoiling stuff.

Yeah this is an aspect that i didn't expect Kojima to get it right. Look forward to seeing if that reviewer is correct.

Oh, no. I certainly wouldn't say it was the general consensus. Though I'm not the first person to say it, either, like a couple others are making out.

I was just let down with how underused and simple the Wild Hunt became and how little was done with Yen and Geralt's relationship. The second half of the game when Ciri really comes into play improved immensely 'cause I felt like she and Geralt had an actual relationship in the game. Whereas with Yen it felt like they just left it at "yeah, these two were into each other in the books" and really went nowhere and did nothing with it.

I can agree with that sentiment. I also preferred the latter half.

MGS V PHANTOM PAIN | OT | BEST MGS, SPARSE STORY

Joking aside, it's a relief to see the positivity for this game. But I feel it's honestly a toss up if the "loose threads" and sparse story claims are actually legit, or if the reviewer just isn't all that familiar with his MGS lore/didn't listen to tapes. That's to be judged once I actually get to play the game.

I think I remember them mentioning this before. The game won't let you move onto the ending if you aren't prepared or at a certain point with mother base?

Well I'm not too sure on that. Ground Zeroes gives you less than 40% completion for finishing the main story, and some of the completion comes from additional challenges and difficulty runs.

The Kinda Funny reacts video is the only thing you need.

I'm going GAF thread blackout now as spoilers will be all over.

What a swan song...a series that I played throughout my entire life coming to an end. .tearing up ;_;

I want to watch a video review but seriously don't want anything spoiled....

Part of the review embargo is that they have to only use pre-approved gameplay and cutscenes.

From what I've seen from the GT trailer it is nothing I haven't seen from an official release.

Honestly, watching the cutscenes was always my favourite part of MGS. Never particularly cared for the gameplay until GZ. Can't imagine I was the only one.
GZ was my first MGS (other than the free MGS4 demo) and I hated every second of the cut scenes, especially the end one (but loved the gameplay). Were the MGS cut scenes better in the past?

Are any of the reviews discussing the PC version? Is it reasonably well optimized?

I don't think anyone was given access to the PC version yet.

Evidently there's literally no new footage in any video review.

Correct. That's Konami's directive, but someone may have captured their own and didn't see those embargo terms.

We've been told to hold most things until after launch on September 1.

I imagine you'd hate them even more. GZ's cutscenes were a more realistic, mature take on cutscenes. Old MGS is wacky as hell.

If Peace Walker is any indication, a lot of the story will be fleshed out in tapes. Apparently that's where Big Boss talks the most.
