Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I loved the shit out of MGS1-4, but I haven't really been able to get hyped for this like I'd expect because it's been so long since I've played the previous games, and I never finished Peace Walker.

These scores have me pretty damn excited, though.

Are people really upset and at the verge of tears for a game with currently a 96 metacritic and criticisms from a 10/10 review.

Boy, I'm going to need popcorn for the inevitable 8/8.5

I'm more concerned about the text. The game seems fantastic for those who like AAA open-world action games but as a Metal Gear fan who likes the story, I don't know what to think.

So you can't beat the game when playing on the lower difficulties? Sorry but that's an absolute joke, I am loving what I am hearing but that's put me off the game completely.

Christ, spoilers in the review thread? Fucking catch yourselves, people. God damn it.

I can't BELIEVE that just got spoiled in here.

Seriously? The game has 5 reviews on metacritic. It will undoubtly get 90+ but metacritic is pointless right now.

I'm just saying it is ridiculous to get deeply upset at a game that has been getting nothing but almost perfect/perfect reviews.

Criticisms are good and welcomed, and often times people find criticisms in works they love the most because that is just human nature. Why would anybody write a review without saying something that bothered them.

The fact that a reviewer would attach a perfect score to it, and write in the review that it was worth it and engaging later on, shows it isn't a fatal flaw.

Well I have absolutely 0 doubt the gameplay will be better.

Personally I still like Snake Eater more, having beaten Phantom Pain.

Gameplay-wise Phantom is better. It's less survival-focused sure, which is a HUGE draw for Snake Eater, but Phantom Pain really goes hog-wild with the open ended format. I don't just mean the open world in a literal sense, but the sheer amount of gear combinations are insane. You can basically approach any situation in any number of ways.

Really excited for this but the one thing that bugs me.

Just why ?

Anyway its gonna be great.

I imagine this is far worse and frustrating for reviewers who are having to blitz through the game by a deadline. As I found in Peace Walker, I was fine with that sort of thing when it was rare or at least interesting. The escaped prisoner thing was over done in Peace Walker since it was so close together.

High reception as expected. Sparse story is ok, that's how the game is now. I don't care about how it's delivered but the story itself.

and "only" 96 to MGS3, damn it hurts.

A lot of people saying that some of these reviews complain about stuff and are still 10s are missing the point.

Games don't start off as a 10 and docked points for every negative element. If a reviewer likes a game so much that they are not bothered by any negative elements they can absolutely score it in any way they see fit.

Which honestly (I mean no offense) is another way to say that hype and bias come into play when the game is so important. And MGSV is huge for many reasons.

if you post spoilers here, you're a dick. use spoiler tags, duh. or take that shit to the spoiler thread.

This is definitely the most GAME MGS game of the series. I can understand the Story getting some dings. Given the hours you spend with the core gameplay, I can see the narrative being spread out significantly.

I'm cool with that, though.

Yes but from what i'm seeing the folks who are slightly disappointed so far are mostly because of what the reviews say (open world design means the story takes a hit) and not just reacting to the scores.

IGN giving a massively hyped game from a historic franchise a 10 is nothing special, though they seem to have gotten less fanboy-ish in recent years.

Gamespot is definitely more critical (though not as much as the old crew from '96-'07), so the 10 from them is notable. "Tackles taboo issues with grace"? Damn, did Kojima learn how to write?

But in general I think Eurogamer gives the best reviews out of all the major outlets. If anything it's promising that their review isn't out yet.

Even though you've been raised as just another game director, you are not one of them.

They can be a great industry, Kojima, they wish to be. They only lack the game to show the way.

For this reason about all, their capacity for 8/10, I have sent them you, my only son.

"Tackles taboo subjects with grace" is legitimately astounding after MGS4's B&B Corps. Solid, but forgettable boss fights followed by zoomed in shots of the chests and asses of female models while they moan until you shoot them and Drebin calls up with some "Dead babies, Snake. Super sad dead babies" shit. Lazy, misogynist, and intellectually-insulting from every angle.

Excited to actually play the game but this topic is a biohazard area now since people are apparently spoiling stuff.
