Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

It's also less congruent to what's actually transpiring. If I'm in a firefight or waiting for just the right moment to run past a guard, I'm not going to be giving a shit about some past detail involving distant characters or events.

yeah
this is the point i was trying to make
its a HUGE difference

I actually just got an answer to that question from someone else. No actual spoilers here but I'm putting this in spoiler tags just in case. If you want to know whether or not a secret ending exists:

There is indeed a secret ending that some reviewers may have not seen. Sounds like it's pretty satisfying. Glad I didn't rush to review the game for today!

I feel disappointed in the lack of story/cut scene elements, but then I think...wait a minute, the story elements and dialog were so fucking stupid in previous entries...

Maybe the omission is a plus?
That was one of most criticized points in MGS4 so I can see Kojima avoiding it in MGS5.

It's wonderful that there are such great reviews, but business is business starting on Monday and we're a few days out before the official launch.

I'm excited and feel like playing more of Ground Zeroes this week to get prepared, but I'm also wanting to save some time for that fresh moment going into MGS.

Then play a tape while Snake takes smoke break while he's sneaking. You don't have to play while listening. The tapes are like codecs but more versatile. It's actually a good way to put in more story without having to come up with reasons for Snake being in direct contact with every character like codecs did.

GT review has me super hyped for the plot. People knocking the story has me expecting something more in line with MGS2 and less with 3 and 4 which is A-ok in my books. Hope I'm not wrong in that estimation though.

Seems more accurate to say that MGS1-4 are all the same type of long-winded plotting, and MGSV is like none of them.

Whoa, down boy. I said "seems like" and I definitely wasn't trying to speak for you. I have no interest in speaking for you, haha. Calm down. Jesus.

This MGS V hype has people on edge, I see.

I'm still looking forward to the game, just significantly less now. Notice how I said "I'm."
There was literally nothing about that post that suggested they were on edge or not calm?

I'm not really too disturbed by a lack of cutscenes especially if said cutscenes are trimmed such that MGSV is more like other triple A titles in regards to cutscene length and density.

I found plenty of cut-scenes to be completely stupid and pointless in the past MGS games and if some of that stuff can be cut out and relegated to tapes, the game is better for it.

the difference is
codec calls were "live". it was something actually happening as you listened.

the tapes are just lore dumps of things that happened in the past. you dont see how that would be less engaging than the classic codec "cutscenes"?

Exactly. Not only that but they involved your actual player character and as you followed along with his reaction to the conversation you grew to get a sense of him. Doesn't happen listening to tapes. Gonna be hard to get inside BB's head without some kind of replacement for codecs, and frankly the reviews make it clear that that never happens and Kiefer barely speaks.

I should really stop reading this thread and go back to, uh, playing Metal Gear Solid V, but RE: the cassette tapes: the writing in those tapes is actually really good. Way better than any of the cut-scenes, actually, since the tapes sound like real people talking and not teenage goth poetry.

Thank god for that

You might not like how they're delivered -- and it sure is annoying when you're listening to a tape while sneaking around and then suddenly Kaz starts speaking over it to tell you stuff about the mission -- but the tapes themselves are done really well. Kiefer is the best.

I had this issue immediately in GZ, when I was sneaking around and the tape plays automatically, I can hear engine noises of a truck, and I am frantically looking around unaware that it is the tape playing. The tapes in GZ seemed pretty good

I'm getting pulled in every direction reading these impressions...

Like what I'm hearing:
-Great AI and ways to tackle objectives
-Mother base and expanding your military circle of influence
-Customization, FOBs, buddy systems

Strongly dislike:
-Only two areas in the game (which reviewers have noted gets stale after a while)
-Less emphasis on story/awesome Kojima-san cutscenes
-Large and important chunks of story tucked away in lots of hidden cassettes
-Replaying older missions on harder difficulties to get to the ending
-"Secret" ending

I guess you are right but remember a lot of hate the "story/awesome Kojima-san cutscenes" get with MGS4.

So I can see why they have less emphasis now.

Jason, can you list what your favorite Metal Gear game was prior to V?

We need to know for science.

and if your opinion is worthwhile

MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS1 for me, but they're all so astronomically high in quality that it doesn't matter what order they go in. 2 and 3 in particularly are pretty much totally interchangeable depending on my mood lol.

I hate 4 and PW, but honestly while my GREATEST hope is that this game is my favorite out of all of them, I'd be more than happy with a game that earns the title "Metal Gear Solid V".

I know there're many reviews left for MGS:V but it seems around 95 is a safe bet, so does anybody believe that Fallout 4 still has a chance of winning the GOTY this year?

Yes.

Every game that hasn't come out yet has a chance. I do think Fallout 4 could surprise people.

a solid reason why i am giving away so many copies of the game. yay. i am so happy right now. sending Kojima off with an amazing accomplishment.

I'm pretty sure the ending of MGS4 was as long as a feature length movie. Ya'll may like the story of MGS, but the way it's presented definitely needed some improvement.

This will be the first MGS I have played since the original MGS, at least for any amount of time. I put maybe an hour into MGS2 and 3-4 hours into MGS4. Well, I did play through Ground Zeroes, I dunno that it counts tho as a full game.

To be honest, I'm not really into the story or the characters, but I loved Ground Zeroes because it was such a huge departure from the previous games in structure and control. That's why I'm Day One fo5r MGS5, between this and Mad Max, September is going to be a great month.

I won't mind if the story and dialogue is cut shorter than MGS4 or MGS3, but I hope it's as much as MGS1. I always thought that was just about the perfect amount of story and dialogue.

So this is what Kojima meant by tabboo that may force him to leave the industry.

To piss off the MGS superfans who want 50 minute cutscenes. /jk

Everything is openworld now :\ ... don't have the stamina or time for these games any more :(

Uncharted 4 can't come soon enough

How I feel about most game announcements.

At least MGS5 seems to feature fantastic gameplay and many ways to deal with objectives.
