2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Boss lady is looking for a new laptop. She want's something lightweight. She mainly uses for email, a few different sites/software for our (downloading data and generating reports) and connecting to our work server. She prefers a larger screen. She would like to be around the $1000 price range.

The Dell XPS 13 looks like a viable candidate, any reason not to think so? I see some have issues with trackpad but if a mouse is used with it for like 80-90% of the time is it really a non issue?

Zenbook UX303 is another one I'm looking at.

And I'm also looking at a surface pro 3 but I saw 4 should be around the corner and a big upgrade.

Hey guys. I'm heading off to school in Ottawa soon and I'll be living in Rez, so I'm looking for a portable laptop that I can use as my only real computer while I'm up there. As far as gaming goes I'll only be doing the occasional game of League of Legends or things like that, nothing new or AAA. I like the idea of having a big screen for Netflix etc but I think 14-15 inch is a good middle ground between portable and big enough !

I like the look of the Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon, the form factor seems nice and it actually looks like it has a good battery life ! I like the idea of having a 5-6 ++ battery life, so hearing that is good. I'm curious if I should go with the i7 ? I know it gets you the 8 gigs ram. Anything else I should consider ? The Y50 looks really cool but I mean, with the limited battery life and extra size I'm not sure that's what i want to go with.

Let me know guys, I hope I don't end up with some gimped macbook air that won't be good in a year, I want something to last the next 4 if it could ! Open to suggestions ! My parents are reserved on big gaming laptops that will overheat and be no good in a year, right ? And it's true, I might have a lecture hall with no outlet. It's possible ! The size seems nice !!

Am I better off with the T450s or the Carbon with I7 ?

Okay, so I'm looking for a laptop, 1000$, mainly use it for browsing the internet and school, I'd like it to be able to run recent games at low/medium settings (but don't want an ugly looking "gaming laptop," or at least one that looks too over the top), but what's most important is that it's durable, since I've had battery charging problems with previous laptops. So far I like these:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YR6BMS2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

But I just want to have something that doesn't have many reported technical issues at all.

Copying from PC-GAF where I didn't see 2nd line in OP :(

Hey!

I know this is the PC thread, but I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on a laptop? My Mac has been shitting out for the past few months and crashing non-stop, running slow, etc - even after getting repaired multiple times. Think it's on it's last legs.

I'm looking for a new laptop, windows, mostly for school but also potentially for a few games that won't take a lot of resources (Dota 2, Rocket League on low, etc etc). I've narrowed it down to a few (goal is under $1000) and was wondering if anyone would give me some advice? I haven't built a PC in a few years and laptops were never my specialty.

Dell Inspiron 15 - 5547 (Worried about the onboard graphics on this one. Only a 4400 vs 5500 or more on the others).

Dell XPS Ultrabook

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RY4X8A4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

ASUS Zenbook UX303LA-US51T

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...-Signature-Edition-Laptop/productID.313371600

ASUS K501LX-EB71

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YR6BMS2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Aspire V Nitro

http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.MQJAA.002

As I said, mostly this would be used for Excel at school, Media (Netflix/iTunes), and maybe some Dolphin/Dota. I'm just looking for recs or comments. The ASUS K501LX looks pretty good because of the i7, 8 GB DDR3, and NVIDIA GeForce 950M. BUT, I don't know how that stacks up to the Intel 5500 Graphics that most of the others have.

Can anyone help? Thanks :D

Edit: One last thing - if anyone has extra experience with any of these touch pads, please comment on that. I have a mouse and would be using that for gaming obviously, but when I'm just watching netflix or listening to music I use the touchpad and LOVE the one on my Macbook. It's probably the best one I've had and the main thing I like about Apple devices. Thanks again^^

Get this. Touchpad doesn't have shit on the Mac though.

Hey,
I'm planning to buy a Laptop for University and need you help deciding for one ;)

Country: Germany
Maximum budget: 500€
Max size: 15"
Planned usage: studying, surfing, watching movies, no gaming at all (hope it's ok posting here although it says gaming laptop thread in the title)

Only other thing important to me is the fan noise should be as low as possible in that price-range

How about this.

Just pulled the trigger on this MSI GS70 Stealth Pro-096 for 1599 (probaby about 60 bucks cash through cash back site, ebay and card) so about 1540 total.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-GS70-St...-16GB-Memor-/291539847027?hash=item43e1210773

i think i may have a got a good deal on this :)

it is still up if anyone is interested

Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.50 GHz
17.3" Full HD
16GB DDR3L
1 TB 7200 RPM + 768 GB (256 GB mSATA SSD x 3 RAID 0)
NVIDIA Geforce GTX 970 6GB

only downside being the red color but w.e i can deal with that and maybe the screen which i think is not IPS
.

Dayum, amazing deal. Congrats.

I honestly think the red one is sexy as a mofo. I'd choose that one, because fuck subtlety.

I like the second one.

8GB RAM is nice, but I can't say it's worth the $600 premium of the higher Carbon SKU.

T450s vs Carbon is rugged utility vs premium flash. I'm a flash kinda guy, because the extra flourishes help me sleep at night. If you can afford it, why not treat yourself?

This MSI GE62 is the best buy around $1k.

The only problem with this is that rainbow colored LED keyboard. I'm pretty sure that's a dealbreaker tbh.

Alright, I like the look of the Carbon X1 but upon further investigation I don't think it really has the punch I'm looking for. I guess I would like something with an I7, 15.6 inch screen with a good battery, and GOOD BUILD QUALITY. 1500-2000 range works for price, buying from Canada, for myself a student. What are the main contenders for that arena ? If I go with a 14 inch or a i5 I think Carbon looks like the way to go, but interested in 15.6 with i7. Gonna go check some out physically tommorow to help with decisions, so suggestions on what to check would be great.

Aspire V Nitro looks nice, 15 inch with quality stuff in there. Is this too much of a 'gaming laptop' ? Or will it have the battery life/product life I want/need ?

http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00O56K8CK/

16 GB RAM with i-7 seems nice, but is there anything I can get with this approx size and power with more battery life, or is this the way to go ?

Lenovo Y-50 also has really nice specs, wondering if there is a better and similar laptop out there ?

They only show it in rainbow, so you can see the different color zones. You can make all of the zones whatever uniform color you'd like.

I even wouldn't recommend a laptop whose keyboard was permanently in rainbow.

Dell XPS 15 gets over 5 hours

All right guys, looks like my laptop just bit the dust. I press the power button and nothing happens. I pulled out the HDD and plugged it into my desktop and it's not that, so I think I'm just going to buy a new one.

All I want to do is browse the web, listen to music, and watch videos. No gaming, nothing intensive whatsoever. It'd be nice if it had an SSD, but that's not necessary because I can always easily upgrade that. So basically if it doesn't have an SSD, it should probably have some lousy hard drive that won't be adding much to the cost since I'll probably be tossing it.

Also, 1080p would be nice, though I'm not sure how much of a premium you pay for that. My current (broken) laptop - the Dell N5010 was only 1366x768 so really anything above or at that is fine. If 1080p isn't much of a price difference though, then that'd be good. 1600x900 would also be good. I wouldn't be horribly opposed to sticking with 1366x768 though.

So what do I get?

Buy this. Amazing value and leaves the door open for gaming down the road

About to hit purchase on that laptop. Anyone have any objections?

Also, it's so painful to spend this much money when just this morning my laptop was working perfectly fine and I was perfectly happy with it... I still can't accept that it's gone...

I know that feel. Now, push the go button. You'll thank yourself later.

Gonna wait til tomorrow morning just to see if by some miracle my laptop decides to rise again. Mostly because by waiting til tomorrow the shipment won't arrive any later anyways, so might as well wait.
But yeah, I'll order it tomorrow morning unless a miracle occurs. I am looking forward to having a SSD and 1080p on my laptop. And battery life. My current laptop literally doesn't have battery life. The second I unplug the charger it gives me the "low battery" warning. Haha

Welp, just bit the bullet and hit the submit order button.

As much as it sucks to spend $800, I'm super excited for the new laptop. It's literally everything I want and for a great price. Thank you so much for the spot on recommendation, K.Jack!

Wow. That's a nice laptop Kipp. I might have to go with that one myself. I really like my moms 15" macbook pro (screen size, build quality, size, power, and battery) and I'm looking for the windows equivilent, maybe one that can handle some 'light gaming' (mostly league). Any other premium 15 inch laptops worth checking out ? I'm willing to spend a little more for something a little nicer, but honestly not interested in the whole touch 4k screen thing, I think.

The only XPS 15 I can find in canada is the over 2 thousand dollar 4k touch one!

Is the HP omen any good?

As far as a gaming laptop starting at $1,499, hell no. You can have a GTX 980M equipped Clevo for a few dollars more.

Out of curiosity K jack. How long do you stay with your laptop before replacing it? 4 -6 years?

I buy a laptop with the fastest single GPU available, and stick with it for 2-3 years at the most, because I want new tech. But my GT72 having guaranteed Pascal support will probably stretch this one to 4 or 5.

Yeah I'm realizing that regarding the HP omen. Why the hell is that so expensive?

On another note, how are the Lenovo Y series? I'm thinking about a gaming laptop in the 15inch range, and also something fairly slim. The y50 at best buy seemed really nice, but it had windows 8.1 and an i7 4th gen. Are they refreshing that line soon?

I used to have a 17in Asus ROG and I sold it because I hated how heavy and gigantic it was.

Greetings,

I live in the US and currently plan to move to Japan at the end of the year and work for a year or two.
My PC tower is too much hassle to bring it with me so I'm looking for a laptop that can run Photoshop and Maya stably, play PC games, and most of all, has a very good screen (I'm a concept artist). Would be nice if the GPU can be upgraded.
The current budget is USD1000~1200. Is there anything in this price range standing out? I can also increase the budget for something awesome. :D

Sincerely

Yes, I've never upgraded a GPU before, but I will this time.

Well this weighs 3lb less than a G751.

is that Destiny? I didn't know it was announced for PC.
The subliminal is real?

Nevermind, link works. Wow, I've never heard of this brand. Would this one be a good choice?

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8651-clevo-p650se-eta-08282015-p-7690.html?wconfigure=yes

That's same machine as the one I linked, it's just the base config. My link just has a 120GB SSD, 8 more GB of RAM, and upgraded thermal paste bundled in at just $100 extra, whereas manually configuring the base with the same specs is $210 more.

Good? This new P series are the best laptops Clevo has built in years.

Whatever you, you should pay the +$45 to upgrade to the IPS display.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely look into this one!

p.s. Is there anyway I can look up the sRGB coverage of that IPS monitor?

Country: America
Maximum budget: 1k at max looking for cheaper
Max size: 15-17, my current laptop is huge but, it works as my vision is poor
Planned usage: gaming/mostly browsing. I don't need anything god-tier but, I'd like to try some MMOs like Wow, Or TOR, and play older games and new RPGs like PoE.

I know it isn't a high gamut display, so expect it to be 72%, which is the usual for laptop displays.

Buy a Lenovo Y50. You don't want to go with a lesser GPU than the GTX 860M.

$999 is the best I'm gunna do for a decent gaming laptop? I should mention I'm not playing anything too demanding. WoW, and RPGs are all I desire.

Are there any Clevo laptop resellers (UK) that offer a tune-up service, if that's even a thing?

If not, then any other brands that do something similar?

Country: UK.
Price Range: £550 - £650
Performance: Whatever I can get at that price.
Size: No max/min size

Is it even remotely possible to buy anything useful at the £500 price range? I don't mean decent, I mean, functional.

It doesn't look like it, but I don't know the market very well. It all just looks like garbage until you spend a significant amount of money.

Edit: So lets say the £600 range. Ugh.

Take one of these, add the i7-4710MQ, 8GB RAM, and GTX 950M puts you at £612.00 inc VAT. Then decide on your storage option.

How is the AMD A8-7410 fare with an i5-5200U? I'm currently just using a netbook with an A6-1450 and it's starting to fall apart so I decided to go for something bigger.

The A8-7410 is priced in the same bracket with the i5 laptops but it's having an discount that cuts deeper compared to the i5 counterparts.

I'm not looking to use it for demanding tasks, but I guess running NFS Most Wanted without much lag on 800x600 is all I ask at tops.

Not looking for a gaming laptop but I figured that this'd be the best place to ask.

Not to hijack the thread but I'm also in the market for a new laptop
-needs to be able to run phtopshop and othe rimage editing software really well for digital art purposes
-mutitasking with multiple applications running
-good to great screen with good viewing angles, pretty important.

what do you guys suggest? budget is like 800 bucks.

Any body have an idea on what type of specs I should be aiming for?

country : USA
Max Budget : maybe 850-900
usage : web browsing and photoshop/sketchbook pro/Sai basically iamge editing programs for digital art, multiple tasks and programs. Possibly video editing software as well

Any suggestions guys?

Okay so I got a Dell Inspiron 5000 last week through a clearance sale, I got it mostly for work and because my previous laptop didn't work anymore, but decided to test out some of my steam games and it can play the basic ones (my previous laptop couldn't play any of those.)

It has 4GB ram and an Inten R (HD) Graphics card.

Apparently all of its specs except the dedicated video memory would allow it to run KoFXIII, It currently has 64MB of dedicated video ram, while it would require 256 to run that game, and some others.

Is it possible if I expand the ram to 8GB to allocate some to the Graphics card? At least 512MB or 1024MB?

Well, you need an IPS then, and this is your cheapest bet.

Nope.

What exactly do you mean by tune-up?
Like, suppose my laptop gets out-of-date someday and I want to upgrade some things like the GPU or the processor, so they take my laptop and change everything, which costs a lot but not as much if I bought a new laptop. I think I should have said "upgrade service" instead of "tune-up".

Does such a thing even exist?

If not, then is the only recourse to sell the laptop I don't want it any more?

Hey guys. My current laptop is real ghetto right now - busted power button (have to press in the contact to get it to power on) and the screen's broken. I've decided to finally get a new and hopefully decent one.

I've had my eyes on this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VRKV7I6/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Perhaps you guys might know a better one for my price range?

Country: US

Max Budget: $700

Max Size: Don't care

Planned Usage: Low to Medium gaming on games around 2012-2014, typical resolution of 1366x768, hopefully 60fps

Is there anything I can do then?

Nope. Well, eh, nothing I know of.

I think I decided to settle on this Gigabyte notebook.

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5454#sp

Yay or nay?
Nay. CPU and GPU run way too hot.

I'd trick out one of these instead. It's better in every way that matters.

I'm sure PCSpecialist could accommodate GPU upgrades, assuming you buy a machine that could have them upgraded.
