Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

And having a full circle is a plus. Thank fuck we have optiojs, I'd hate to have to use a square watch if I wanted actionable notifications because if the phone I picked.

I think I'm going to go with the Huawei Watch once more reviews come out. Sorry Moto but the glass back sucks.

Do any of the new watches have NFC?

No, which is a little baffling considering Goog is about to make a hard push for Android Pay.

And do the Apple Watch have NFC?

Yup, NFC specifically for Apple Pay support.

To be honest though, if I had to choose something I wish Android Wear would take from the Apple Watch, it would be the speaker. As dumb as it seems, being able to bang out short phone calls with the watch was really convenient when I had one. I do a lot of work with my hands for my job and constantly receive short phone calls from co-workers trhough, so that may just be me.

Wholly agree. I think the time for premium products is when Android Wear is a mature platform. Right now, when we are basically in the "pay to beta test" phase, the prices should be going in the other direction.

Yeah I'm with you there. I would have hoped the Sport would be less expensive, but I'm not sure I'm ready to bite at $300.

If you look at how quick the original 360 dropped in price along with every other watch, I think you'd have to be insane to buy early at full price. It'll be $100 off somewhere within a month or two.

Very true. These things are not in high demand.

I was hoping Android Wear would really come out swinging second gen. It's better I guess but I don't know anyone who is remotely interested in getting a Wear watch. The only people I know with a smartwatch are Apple users.

Looks like I'll have to wait for 3rd gen, things are just not quite mature enough esp with NFC payment becoming more popular.

Guess im waiting for news on the sports watch.

Been wanting to hear good things since im looking for a gps / smart watch / activity tracker but the moto 2 isnt quite there

Hopefully someone does a decent teardown. Wouldn't be shocked that if like WiFi, it has the tech in it but has to wait until Android Pay is supported on it. I can't see Moto being stupid enough to not realise it's a big deal.

Considering the hard and software that's being used, I'd say we're still in the first gen. Maaaybe gen 1.5. Both, the Moto and Huawei, basically still use the same hardware that Wear launched with.

I have that one (and love it, it's my choice half the time)! I was looking for the new stuff.

The thing is most developers just treated the new update to support clicking on one section (like your battery meter) to change it to a different display (like your step counter).

There is the Bits watchface which zooms in to show you more info, but having a bunch of circles is kind of not a great watch design.

The Moto 360/G Watch was like version 0.5 vs everything else being 1.0. Second gen watches needs a speaker, NFC, and GPS as the standard. Really not sure what else they could do with a watch after those 3 are added. Other than make it thinner.

Makes me wonder when things will really pick up, if at all. It's gotta be next year right?

Gonna retire my 360
270
for a Gear S2. Goodbye Android Wear.

Yeah. Was looking into Android Wear but wanted to see what Samsung would put out first. The Gear S2 looks incredibly solid and better than just about every Android Wear watch so far from what we've seen, IMO. Hopefully it delivers after it launches.

Pujie Black all the way. I haven't changed my watchface for my 360 from that since December of last year. The watch face itself is just soo good.

How? It looks more toyish than the new Moto 360 and Huawei watch.

I thought the same thing because I've only seen the regular version, but apparently Samsung also has a Gear S2 Classic that looks more like a real watch. Still not sure if I'd say it looks better.

Doesn't have the flat tire like the 360, the rotating bezel is genius, and NFC (so Samsung Pay is coming if you own a Samsung device).

If the battery life is as good as Samsung says (think I heard 2-3 days) and if they have it at a good price, it'll probably be the smartwatch I pick up. We'll see though.

If that step tracker ties to Fitbit then it's going to be a huge plus from my opinion. Pretty much can't live without my Fitbit at this point.

if you watch is connected via wifi but not through bluetooth to your phone, can it still receive text messages from your phone? or only internet related services

Everything. As long as your phone has an internet connection somewhere, it'll push them.

The S2 proper looks better IMO. Looks kind of futuristic. Probably gonna get that.

Eh, but Samsungs software. I'm not even doing an "lol Touchwiz" here, I hate their software team for making decent hardware suck so hard even down to smart TV features. They're always finding some way to hamstring their devices with that team.

I just looked at a CNET preview of the Gear S2. It looks snazzy, I think the rotating bezel is genius, but yeah the Tizen software is going to be a real checkmark in the "con" column for this. The # of apps is disappointing. And while I currently have an S5, I am thinking of switching to the latest LG when I upgrade later this year. The Gear S2 will still work with it, but apparently some of the features will only work with Samsung phones, so ... yeah... gimped.

Still eager to see more details about the new Moto. But at the moment I'm thinking this space maybe hasn't matured enough for me to jump in.

Tizen will have more app compatibility than AW at launch. AW is garbage. It's so buggy and annoying and I'm not a fan of the cards. Looking at the videos, the app switching and picking looks so simple on the S2. The rotating bezel is genius. I have no issue with Tizen as long as it doesn't suck. The original Gear ran android but was garbage.

Just checking this CNET preview article which indicates:

There are roughly 70 app partners working on Gear S2 apps currently, with about 50 apps planned for launch -- a far cry from the thousands on Apple Watch and Android Wear.

Well yeah, they used real Android not even one designed for watches. Then it upgraded to Tizen and was.... Garbage. Along with the Gear 2 which was Tizen outta the box.

Hmm thought I read an article that said almost a thousand apps.

Also AW apps # are misleading. There's a ton of garbage in the app store ranging from just apps that are watch faces to a million productivity apps for fitness and things like that. The S2 apps seem useful like ESPN or uber.

That's just two apps, buddy. There will be plenty of garbage samsung apps.

As a developer, I can pretty much guarantee you the Gear S2 won't get many apps.

Smartwatches are a niche market that even Apple has trouble moving huge numbers in, so you KNOW the Gear S2 won't be selling huge numbers. It just isn't going to be worth that much to develop apps for that watch, depending on your app and how popular it is, you might just be investing time for dozens of sales.

So yeah, if you like the watch and what it does out of the box, go for it. But don't buy it expecting it to get the same amount of support as Android Wear watches will get, that's just not a realistic scenario.

Is the Moto 360 still worth picking up for £135?

Given the battery life + slower processor, I would argue no, not even at that price.

They are probably going to run a fire sale on the old 360s soon to clear them out, so either wait for that if you absolutely must have a 1st gen 360, or pick up something else, almost any other Android Wear watch is going to give you a better experience, especially as software updates continue to roll out.

+1 for waiting for a sale since it bound to happen very soon. And it's been on sale for far cheaper than that price in the US so you should probably wait too.

You're acting like Tizen is gaining any traction at all. This reminds me of Symbian or Windows Phone vs Android/iPhone.

You're actually the first person I've seen on this board pretending like a Tizen OS is advantage.

Never said that. Just said the apps they offer are more appealing. The interface looks appealing and videos from tech sites state its very smooth. Im basing everything on what people have used.
