MGSV: The Phantom Pain has shipped 3 million units worldwide

I enjoy these threads just because we could have gotten the same exact announcement a month before launch as well "Konami [planning] to ship 3 million copies of MGSV during launch week". Initial shipment allottments are always based on the internal forecasts.

Yeah, probably, PS3/PC are interchangeable depending on how well the PS3 version does in Japan and Europe.

Yup. I said in a previous post above, it's bound to do well in Japan, and even here in the UK, in my local store, the PS3 version is sold out. MGS has a strong history with PlayStation, and that obviously means strong sales for not only the PS4, but for the PS3 too.

I mean you saw the sales of MGS4 on the install base of the PS3 at the time and on an expensive piece of hardware at the time too, just on one console, so I don't think people should sleep on the PS3 version, particularly due to the shift of next-gen, or lack thereof in Japan. Even here in Europe, the PS3 is still going strong as most of my friends (granted quite a few of them are casuals) haven't upgraded yet. My next door neighbor, who's been playing MGS since the first entry, who is again a casual gamer, bought the PS3 version and doesn't really care about the FPS/gfx upgrades etc.

So yeah, I think it's bound to do quite well, I was even tempted to change my predictions to PS4 > PS3 > PC, but as you said, I think they're interchangeable.

Do we know how much Ground Zeroes sold?

~2 million.

Do we know how much Ground Zeroes sold?

To [shamelessly] quote from Wikipedia:

"During the first week of release in Japan, the PlayStation 3 version of the game sold 119,615 physical retail copies, ranking third place amongst all Japanese software sales within that week, whilst the PlayStation 4 version sold 91,903 physical retail copies.

On 25 April 2014, Konami announced that the game shipped one million copies worldwide. The PlayStation 4 version has sold three times more than the Xbox One version.

No official numbers were given on the sales of the Steam version; however, Konami has stated that sales of Ground Zeroes were "solid" on the PC platform. According to Steam Spy, it sold 434,270 units on Steam, as of August 2015."

EDIT: Beaten by one post, damn it! :P

My predictions worldwide are:

PS4 > PC > PS3 > XBO > XB360

I think the PS3 version is going to do better than a few people here expect. I mean idk, I feel like we shouldn't be sleeping on it. I may be way off the mark though lol. Only time will tell I guess ha.

That's not a hard prediction to predict. The U.S. should be the same.

I would put PS3 in front of PC though.

Unfortunately Metal Gear wasn't there from what I remember, but you're right, it should be at ~3 million by now.

Konami Digital Entertainment shipped 2.26 million units of the METAL GEAR series to retailers worldwide in the final quarter of FY2014. These units are mostly attributed, but not limited to the launch of METAL GEAR SOLD V GROUND ZEROES.

In the first 9 months of FY2015 total shipments reached 1.99 million units for the METAL GEAR series amounting in a cumulative 4.35 million units sold between January 2014 and December 2014. Of course not all of those sales will be attributed to Ground Zeroes as some shipments will be attributed to other games released during that period or before that period + Digital sales of older games.

Yeah, I just realized what you meant and edited my post.

First MGS with gameplay that's actually half decent, so good for you Konami.
You know it's bullshit right? I mean obviously MGS5 has the best gameplay not only in the series but in the entire stealth genre, but every MGS game had more than a decent gameplay, they were great gameplay wise.

Well, it also depends on how many units retail actually orders. You can't ship 3 million units when retail doesn't think that it can sell a good amount of that.

Shipped as in sold or just shipped to retailers?

Edit: If shipped as in shipped then I wonder how many is actually sold by now

For comparison's sake, Konami shipped 3.94M copies of MGS4 between the game's launch on 6/12/08 and the end of Konami's fiscal quarter (6/30/08). So MGS4 did 3.94M in 18 days, MGSV has done 3M in a week-ish.

Oh yeah, I guess. I'm most interested though to see how the PC and XBO versions stack up again the PS3 version though. It'll probably be very close.

The PS3 version of GZ already smoked the Xbox versions. PC has a high chance of doing better though, depending on the PS3 version's performance in EU and JP.

I always find it funny when people talk about Metal Gear and Uncharted as if they have poor gameplay, and then turn around and praise the gameplay of Bethesda/BioWare/CDProjekt aka. The definition of jank.

Put one digital sale down for me. Honestly, these days physical numbers just don't tell the correct picture. Anyone else buy digitally?

That's not entirely true.

Konami shipped 3.94m units of the METAL GEAR series.

What Konami officially said was over 3 million.

It's incorrect to assume that all 3.94 million can be attributed to MGS4. Especially when the METAL GEAR series itself accounted for 0.32m the quarter before. I can certainly see it being over 3.5 million in that time frame though.

That should be enough to make the game profitable, no? Why was Konami freaking out over the budget? Granted some quick and dirty math shows that it cut close to just breaking even, but still

Especially considering MGS4 cost $70 million.

After 8 years of inflation $70 million Is basically $80.

I wouldn't be surprised if MGS5 ends up as the best-selling entry.

I think with microtransactions and DLC, it will definitely be the highest grossing one, I'm not sure if it will sell the most units though.

Shipped or sold?

going by your post it would show MGS4 was doing better. MGS4 = 1 platform MGSV = 5 platforms.

I predicted 3 million first week, 6 million in 2015, and 12 million lifetime.
So far, my predictions are spot on, hope even 6m and 12m will happen. :D

I've heard of people not reading the OP....

I've heard of people not reading the posts....

But I've never seen someone not even read the title of the thread before commenting.

Wouldn't be first time that words shipper and/or sold are misused, saying one while meaning another.

The PC version will easily top 1M within the next year.

The Metal Gear franchise is getting close to 1.5M on Steam between Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain, and Revengeance.

Cant wait to clear my backlog so I can play it. Well deserved based off the impressions and gaffers reception and my Twitter feed.
