MGSV: The Phantom Pain has shipped 3 million units worldwide

That wouldn't have been wise because that was around the time EA finally pulled their finger out of their ass and started making football games that didn't make PES the best by default.

I remember here in the UK that PES was fairly popular during the PS2 era but slowly pretty much everyone transitioned to Fifa and now Fifa has been the go to football game for almost the last decade.

I remember my first PC came with Fifa 98 or something for free. That was cool :p

well so far I'm more interested about ps3 or xbox one numbers

Media Create thread this week and the following weeks will have japanese console sales, NPD thread in October will have US console sales. You won't find the info you want in this thread.

PES 5 and 6 are the greatest football games of all time, absolutely no question. They were certainly not the best just by default.

who cares ? MGS fanbase is mostly on playstation

and we'll discuss PS4 numbers when we have them, but we don't so we'll talk about PC numbers which are great and already tracking ahead of stuff like The Witcher 3 on Steam (even though it seems most of their sales are on GOG)

From the UK Charts:

‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ lands Konami their first No1 of the year.

It also marks the series’ return to the top of the All Formats chart for the first time since 2008. It’s a new week 1 high for the series beating the opening week sales of ‘Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty’ by just under 37%. It’s enough to put it at 3rd place in terms of first week sales in 2015 (behind Batman: Arkham Knight & The Witcher III: Wild Hunt). PS4 takes a commanding 72% share over Xbox One which has 22%, while PS3 edges to a 3% share over Xbox 360 with just 2%.

Numbers aren't currently available for those platforms. Other than those saying, 'it sells best on Playstation,' PC numbers gives us something tangible to discuss via the way of Steamspy and concurrent players.

PS3 2%

I didn't want to say anything earlier, but there will be a good amount of crow to be eaten in this thread once people begin to realize the reality of previous-gen multiplatform sales.

They are still the Kings. I wish Konami would do a HD remaster of PES6 with updated teams and stats.

Would be nice alright, I will always maintain that this is exactly what PES 2008 should have been. At least it's been getting steadily better in the last few years.

Seems low to me.

Same for me. And even more when I discovered (in this thread) that the game was on all these platforms :o

It's not bad but could do better regarding the market they were addressing. And it may be bad or good for Konami depending on Konami's Board mood when the quarter results will come :p

Well a shipped figure wouldn't include digital sales, right? Since they're not physically shipped? Do we have shipped figures for any other big games in the first week from this year to compare?

Yeah, PES used to stay in the charts from October till about March/April, now it's lucky to last a whole month.

PES 5 and 6 are the greatest football games of all time, absolutely no question. They were certainly not the best just by default.

Absolutely PES was great on its own merits, but it was also no contest because PS2 era Fifa brought nothing to the table outside of its official license, it took the PS360 for the series to finally create ball physics bersus its animated scripted nonesense prior.

Amount shipped doesn't say a whole lot. What percentage of that amount actually sold-through ? 33%, 50%, 66% ? Maybe most of these 3 million copies are sitting on a shelf or in a box in storage somewhere.

But let's say they sold-thru 50%. This would break down to:

PS4 (72%): 1,080,000
X1 (22%): 330,000
PS3 + X360 (5%): 75,000
Meanwhile, Steamspy has PC at 440,000 but those aren't factored into the shipped amount

Given the numbers, it's pretty safe to guess that the PC version will outsell PS4 over time. It will probably be 2 million owners next year and 4 million the one after, due to ever-increasing discounts. Meanwhile PS4 sales won't increase by much as consoles sales usually blow their load on day 1 while Steam sales are a slow burn.

Yes it does.

Yes it says amount shipped :p

So it tells a lot regarding Konami / Distribution expectations but sometimes shipped products are 80% sold... sometime 50%. But for a game like MGS V I can agree that the gap may not be that big (at least for PS4 shipped probably is close to sold).

Or did I missed something and I'm saying crap..? you are in a lot of industry numbers threads so you may know what you're talking about ^_^

I wonder if console bundles are counted in that number? I for one already had a PS4 but still splashed out on the PS4 MGSV Console. It's so sexy looking!

Yes it does.

Please don't use bogus calculations.

It wasn't meant to be factual, just a possible scenario. But how is the amount shipped so informative? I mean, Atari E.T. might have shipped millions but what does it matter if most of 'em ended up buried in the desert?

Because publishers don't just randomly force millions of copies to retailers. Otherwise every game would ship over 3 million during the launch. Big launch shipment indicates strong pre-orders and retailers believing that the game does well. Sure sometimes this still leads to overshipments but I have hard time to see that 3 million launch shipment is too big for new mainline MGS game (with very strong reviews also).

PS3 2%

Yeah, the drop-off in previous-gen games sales is always far larger than people seem to think.

The console business is absolutely driven by the new hotness, if you're not the type of person to jump onto a new platform, you're probably not going to be buying new games either.

It's a completely different ethos from the more evergreen market on, for example, PC

That seems low, considering it's on five platforms. MGS4 shipped over three million units when it was released, and it was just on PS3.

That's more than I was expecting in the first week since 4 only sold 3 million in the first month. It will probably have longer legs than previous games since it is on Steam.

Aren't we talking about shipped not sold, or am I missing something?

PS3 3%

I didn't want to say anything earlier, but there will be a good amount of crow to be eaten in this thread once people begin to realize the reality of previous-gen multiplatform sales.

PS3 was never really strong in the UK. But I guess given the legacy of MGS and Playstation you should expect more than 3% even on an aging console. Seems UK has moved on. Still, PS3 MGS sku will launch with some respectable numbers mainly due to Japan which should be near 150k. Most early posters were putting a lot of faith in the ROTW to make up that gap between the 450k PC and 150k PS3 in Japan.

Two of those platforms are pretty much non factors though (PS3 and X360). Also at least in UK MGSV opened higher on PS4 alone than MGSIV did on PS3.

Super curious what the budget is now. Between GZ and TPP there's no way this isn't going to be profitable. Great job, Kojima. Hope Konami gives you that raise you deserve!
