Single guys, do you decorate your place with women in mind? (Nerd thread)

I like to keep my place relatively "clean" looking and free of clutter and I dont have shelves full of hundreds of amiibo or anything but as a fan of material traditionally considered "geeky" I do have a Nathan Drake statue and some movie posters scattering my living room. Ideally I'd want an "entertainment" room to dump this stuff in but I'm in a 650 ft one bedroom condo and just don't have anywhere else for it to go.

I'm not one overly concerned with what people think of me, but I was looking at getting the new Lego X-Wing (it's badass) and my friend suggested that might be a bit much for the times where I invite a lady friend over for the first time and Poe Dameron is the first thing she sees.

Do women actually care about these things or should I just do what I want? In my experience it hasn't really mattered, most of the people I've dated I have know quite well beforehand so these things never come as a surprise to them, but I'm curious what the reaction would be from someone who I maybe met relatively recently. Im guessing that someone who's scared off by something as dumb as that probably isn't worth my time to begin with?

Just looking for a bit of dating-GAF advice I suppose.
 
I don't have any decorations or items on display. Not particularly because of women, just because I don't see the point in having posters, etc. I don't own any figures and all my games are in drawers (they're mostly digital these days)

My room back at my old parents house had a bunch of posters back from when I was twelve and never bothered removing. My exgf was there multiple times, but why should she care? She knows I'm a nerd. No need to be embarrassed.
Just do whatever you feel like doing. You're probably not going to get along great with someone who scoffs at having a few gaming related things on display.
 
What? No I decorate it the way I like it. As far as women go, making sure its clean (especially the bathroom) is the main thing.
 
Nope, I've always decorated my place the way I liked it. I really don't care what other people think. It's less stress. :)

Cleanliness on the other hand, yeah, always have to keep it clean. Women are more interested to see that you're clean, rather than a total nerd.

We never really grow up, we just learn to behave in public.
 
I wouldn't be concerned with what a woman who I bring home thinks. If she likes me, she likes me. If she is going to think less of me because of my sports memorabilia or some of my Star Wars pieces then I'd rather she gtfo as soon as possible.

Prior to being married I dated a lot and never had a woman judge me poorly (to my face) about my "kid" or "nerd" stuff. My wife never asked me to stop displaying any of my rare Star Wars framed prints or my framed signed jerseys after we moved in together.

As long as your place doesn't look like:

1) The home of a Serial Killer.

2) The home of a dirty pig cluttered with boxes.

or

3) The home of a 14 year old child.

I think you'll be fine. Just present a sanitary and well kept home, don't leave dishes unwashed or dirty clothes on the floor.
 
If a woman is not mature and progressive enough to understand the nuances of my velvet Goku paintings then she can gtfo.

Also, what does being a nerd have to do with anything? It's not like you're obligated to have shit tier taste in decoration simply because you're a nerd.
 
My place is spotlessly clean, I don't even go to bed if theres a dish in the sink. No worries there

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm usually pretty confident in myself so this is a weird thread for me to make, I guess as I'm nearing 30 I feel like I'm having a bit of an identity crisis or something. It's probably irrational
 
no but i also don't decorate in those other things because i don't care for them. i didn't even know who Poe Dameron is
 
As long as your place is clean you're fine. Vacuum your carpet, mop your floors, and for god's sake clean your bathroom and tub.

So many dude's houses have dirty as hell bathrooms. Gross.
 
The amount of "nerd decoration" is pretty minimal; two funko pop figures and the Ghost from Destiny on my desk and that's about it. There's also a small Stark Sigil print in my bedroom but that gets compliments more than anything else.

I don't really decorate my apartment with women or anyone else in mind, I just don't like super gaudy wall decorations or a lot of shelf clutter. I'm actually working on downsizing what I have.

I think that if you've got someone visiting your apartment, they should already at least sort of know you. Unless it's a one night stand, in that case, who cares? If otherwise and they see that you've got some nerd stuff up, they might tease you but that should be the end of it. If it's a deal breaker, then is that someone you really want to spend time with?

That said, I've been told I have pretty good taste. It comes mostly from years of following Apartment Therapy and stealing ideas from there.

Most typical "bachelor" stuff is horrendous--black leather sofas, lack of plants and artwork, and no color is something I try to avoid.

I wasn't home much when I was a bachelor so my single consisted of a weight bench, a tv and a bed and one of those small fridges with beer also a hot plate that I rarely used.
 
There are ways to embrace nerdy shit like that and have it look neat.
I mean, frame your goddamn posters and it'll look a thousand times better. Keep the statues and collectibles to a minimum. Pick one which you'll display next to your TV or something. Keep most surfaces clean of clutter.

These are rules created not with women in mind, but simply ways to have a presentable home that makes it look like an actual adult lives there.

My skin crawls when I see some of my fellow gaffer's setups in many of the 'show off your desk' threads or equivalents thereof. But then again, I can't imagine hoarding gaming stuff or anything like that so I can't place myself in their shoes.
 
I was thinking about this the other day, how interior design of intimate spaces still seems like something outside the male gender role. It's kinda sad because living in a well designed place can really improve how much you enjoy your private spaces, and we all could use some of that, especially those without someone else to make life less lonely, despairing , and overall less hauntingly crushing.

Do it for yerself brehs.
 
If someone doesn't like my collection to the point where its a problem or they view me negatively for it then they're not for me. Now I won't have my legos and figures piled everywhere like a hoarder, I try to keep them displayed neatly. But I'm not going to change my interests or hide them just to appeal to others.

I want to replace mine. It was a gift and part of a set when I first moved to my new place, which was preferable to moving my old couch.

The last girl I had over said it looked like the casting couch. :(
 
Dude, you barely have anything nerdy as it is. Get the X-Wing. It's LEGO, which is awesome, and it's Star Wars, which is also awesome.

I wouldn't want to invite over a woman who judges me negatively for those small things.
 
I keep it clean, because I was raised that way and then I keep it decorated how ever I feel like it should be according to my taste and personality. If they don't like it, who cares? My girlfriend thinks I'm tacky as hell.
 
I keep it clean and organized because that's how I like to live, lol. I keep some game stuff up too because it's what I enjoy - hopefully anyone I want to date is cool with that.
 
I think if these women already know you - whether it's from in-person interactions or through phone, email, app, etc. - I think that keeping your apartment clean as a whistle would be the ONLY thing that matters.
 
There's nothing wrong with a few nerdy elements in your room. Just don't overdo it. That's tacky no matter what the subject is. Porcelain dolls, African wood carvings, excessive China wares, tribal tchotchkes, whatever. Just a few things here and there that say "this is what I like but I'm not overbearing about it."
 
Much easier to just have good taste.

A couple LEGO sitting around is chill. Much better than this:

What would you petsonally do if you were a collector of something though? Have a separate room dedicated to them?
 
For reference this is basically what my place always looks like. The photos are a couple years old but it's basically identical except the PS3 was replaced with a PS4

Yeah I hate the wall colour too but this is exactly how it came from the builder and I've been too lazy to paint. And the cliché black leather sofa came free from my dad and I'm too cheap to buy a new one

And yeah the posters look dumb as hell because I didn't know what I was doing when I put them up. There was originally only the 3 above the couch and then I started adding more. I need to redo that at some point


I guess this was originally dating advice but there's no way this won't become an interior design thread now :p
 
What you do with your own place is up to you. It's yours, you gotta live in it, so you may as well make it as awesome to live in as you can.

I'd say my house is fairly neutral. I have discrete nano block models sitting on my entertainment unit and speakers and I have a Big Daddy statuette looking over my kitchen from a high shelf, but that's about it in terms of "nerd" stuff. I'm not a fan of knick-knacks, photos, etc all over the place anyway.

I don't any floral patterns around, but I do have a mixture of warm neutrals and colour with some geometric patterns. But that's mostly what I like - it has nothing to do with making it chick friendly, although I'd be lying if I didn't make some consideration to wider aesthetics when choosing things.

Personally I find excessive posters, models, etc of any nerd subject to be tacky - be it games, movies, anime, cars, guns, whatever. I'd say it's better to have just one or two feature items rather than filling a place with junk.
 
As long as decoration stays decoration, I see nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with things you like. There is a difference though between decoration and storage. It's one thing to have one nerdy thing on display. It's an entirely different thing to have every inch of your space filled with Amiibos and stuff. That's not decoration, that's storage. I personal don't like cluttered spaces. I prefer everything to be minimalistic and focused.
 
There's some clothes hidden away, 2 pair of shoes, a bed, a desk, a laptop, an usb fan, 1 deodorant, a chair and 4 walls.
 
i've only ever had 1 girl in my room for longer than 15 minutes and it wasn't with the purpose of impressing her.

The type of decoration doesn't really matter. You can make any hobby look nice with some halfway-decent presentation. Other than that, just make sure the place is clean and feels homely.

Also, going by the pictures, your place seems perfectly acceptable.

Your place looks fine! I know people were giving you grief about black leather sofa, but it and the other black furniture accentuate the dark wood flooring well.

It depends on the size of your collection, I think. My boyfriend collects swords, and has like twelve so far, but only Sting and the Master Sword are on display. All the others are in storage. But having a separate room seems appropriate if the collection is large enough.
