Single guys, do you decorate your place with women in mind? (Nerd thread)

There's nothing wrong with a few nerdy elements in your room. Just don't overdo it. That's tacky no matter what the subject is. Porcelain dolls, African wood carvings, excessive China wares, tribal tchotchkes, whatever. Just a few things here and there that say "this is what I like but I'm not overbearing about it."

Well said.

For reference this is basically what my place always looks like. The photos are a couple years old but it's basically identical except the PS3 was replaced with a PS4

Yeah I hate the wall colour too but this is exactly how it came from the builder and I've been too lazy to paint. And the cliché black leather sofa came free from my dad and I'm too cheap to buy a new one

And yeah the posters look dumb as hell because I didn't know what I was doing when I put them up. There was originally only the 3 above the couch and then I started adding more. I need to redo that at some point

I guess this was originally dating advice but there's no way this won't become an interior design thread now :p

Your place is fine, dude. Better than I expected. Put a piece of art on the wall and you're set.

Yup.

I'd say rule 1 of a great looking apartment is 'Get fucking rid of the wall-to-wall carpet'.

No home looks good with a beiged, nasty carpet. Get some hardwood flooring, clickable laminate or even big square tile and a nice colourful carpet for underneath the coffee table.

Aw yiss.

No, and I will never do that. If the person I am dating doesn't respect my hobbies or what I am passionate about, then they should not be in my life. It's simple as that. Besides I am not that nerdy lol. I don't have statues or posters in my room/apartment. I do have my huge game collection and off course my consoles. Anyone who enters my apartment immediately sees them.

Your place is fine! However, if you were trying to court me and invited me over, I would notice that your frames don't match and there's a bit too much clutter in the entertainment center. Though, that's not enough to deter me from seeing you again.

Your place looks lived in and I appreciate that.

Man, your place doesn't even look that bad. Get some bigger, colorful paintings/posters/scroll on the wall there, keep it clean...you good. The couch matches all your shelves and tables so whatever. Hardwood floor, no wall-to-wall carpet. A decent floor rug you vacuum regularly. Looks like somebody actually lives in this place.

I don't think its gonna kill ya chances with anybody, I mean they're in your apartment the hard part is over

I decorate it to look like i want it to look. And girls always say "what a nice play you've got!", so i think i'm doing it right.

I agree, but if you're a renter, you sometimes can't help this.

Be clean, regardless of what you are and what you design with.

Depending on age, it is a good thing to start distancing yourself from a college type room to a young professional's. You can still own your hobbies, just dont give off the idea you are a "perpetual child".

Nothing really changed from being single to being in a relationship. I guess I've been fortunate to meet attractive ladies who are into gaming/don't mind it at all as long as I put more time into them than games. I rock on one side of the room with collections of literary works and the other side with my gaming collection (so pro I know). Now if I was married I know for sure my room will have like 10% of my input...

And that's the reason why I won't get married till early 30s or whatever

Thanks. Yeah the entertainment centre is a disaster...Ive been considering boxing up my older game systems since I don't really use them.

The frames are tough. One of then is a piece of Godfather memorabilia that came pre-framed, the 3 centre ones match and the far right one had really strange dimensions that I had to use an entirely different brand/style of frame for. I guess I should probably try and move them around elsewhere so they aren't all mismatched together.

Appreciate the advice everyone

I'll get right on telling my landlord to rip up the carpet and drop a couple g's on new flooring.

I just try to make sure my room shows that I'm a guy with a lot of interests and passions. In my living-room I have a cabinet filled with amiibos and action-figures (Mass Effect, Metroid and Alien), a shelf with graphic novels and coffee-books, a shelf with Blu-rays, a shelf with DVD's, a wall with vinyl-records, a drum-kit and a big collage-painting of pictures of Grimes.

It's very geeky, but it's clean and nice-looking. Almost everyone who has entered my living-room, has said "Wooow!". All furniture is black, I have red velvet-drapes and red walls. My inspiration was a movie-theater.

In the end, it's all about context. If you have nothing but figurines in a room with ugly furniture and bad decor, yeah it's going to look like shit.

No! If somebody likes me, that person needs to accept me as who I am.

Not that it matters anyways, since my room is a mess.

That basically looks like an ordinary bachelor pad. You're fine. You made it sound like you were living wall to wall with amiibos all over the place.

Also I own my condo so I can do what I want with it. I was always pro carpet untilI got this place came which came with laminate, and I would seriously never go back.

I explicitly mentioned there are NO amiibo :(

Not that there's anything wrong with people who have some

It can be really expensive for that if the house doesn't already come with hardwood flooring though right? Although the cost for cleaning carpets might eventually make them more expensive. Not sure.

Yeah, I guess you're boned on that count. But it always felt so odd to me that so many (I guess american) living rooms are filled with carpet. Who genuinely think that looks good?

I can't say i've ever seen a home that had wall-to-wall carpet in the living room here. At least, I don't remember.

I've never seen it in an apartment but full carpeting is extremely common in houses here (except for the kitchen obviously) .

I'd keep the living/dining/kitchen/bathroom rooms clean and tidy, but I'm not going to hide my gaming stuff away. I'd keep some of it out in the living room and the rest in a separate computer room. No reason to hide your hobby.

It might be because, while it doesn't look as good, its generally a lot more comfortable to walk around on than a hard floor. Also shit doesn't break as easily if you drop it. Can't think of any other reasons.

Carpets, if installed correctly, can last for an extremely long time. Regular vacuuming gets rid of that old carpet feel, as well as spot cleaning for the occasional stains.

Hardwood flooring is great for things like kitchens, dining areas, or other well-trodden rooms. I'd actually recommend linoleum since it's much easier to mop than hardwood. Only problem is if it rips or drop a knife on it :(

Yeah my dad just had a new house built in 2011 and it's fully carpeted. But then it gets freezing here in the winters and a hardwood floor in the morning sucks. I think it's also probably easier to keep clean in general (save for spills). My dark laminate is dusty all the time despite me throughly washing it every week.

As a women, I dont care for your place having gaming shit or anime shit but if your bathroom is disgusting then I'm out.

Clean bathrooms and relative cleanliness overall is pretty important. Content doesn't matter so much as long as its not absolutely absurd like a clown fetish or something.

I'm not single and I keep my room however I want it. My hobbies don't detract from my relationship. I do try to keep it clean, but that's more for myself. I don't like a dirty living space.

Many moons ago, I was invited into my females home. My weary glance turned to alarm as I saw it. The walls, shrouded in many an anime figure and prints, and games. I immediately considered whether or not this specimen was suitable for my seed, though I stayed to further investigate. I am very forgiving. I allowed her an extended pass as my companion, and I am considering my options of renewing it.

This man knows the truth. Carpet floors suck ass.

I don't think of women when decorating my place. But I also don't have much decorations, besides a glass cabinet of amiibo.

I focus on it being comfortable space that's easily navigated over anything else.

I'm not sure where you're from, but a lot of the older houses in North America are stuck with carpet because the owners haven't updated anything since they were initially built. Most new homes being built will give the owner and option for carpet or wood flooring.

Carpet isn't always a complete disaster, though. The OP looks like he's dealing with a neutral carpet. Something with that color can easily be upgraded with an area rug and some color on the walls. As long as they're clean, they can look nice.

If you want girls to think your a dork, put all your amiibos and collectors editions of games on display.

"they need to like me for me so I keep my nerd shit out" - is part of the reason why there's endless streams of threads and posts about guys who can't get girls.

Decorate how you want. Can't go wrong with doing it like an adult though. And for the love of god keep the place clean.

When I was single I kept my place clean, well organized, but I kept all of my gaming, cycling, and bug collecting stuff out in the open as well. Any woman I have to lie to in order to date wasn't someone I wanted to be with.

That said, I went out and bought real furniture, put up framed art, kept some house plants, invested in kickass kitchen gear, and made sure that the place looked great.

This man knows the truth. Carpet floors suck ass.

I prefer carpet. I just like the feeling on my bare feet and it doesn't get freezing in the winter.

In answer to the thread I don't give a damn. It's my room and I'll decorate it in a way I feel comfortable in. If that's with a bunch of anime figures and you don't like that it isn't my problem.

Anyone who'd give you crap about your place is either trolling or drunk. It looks great.

My room is completely nerded out and my ex loved it(she even contributed to it with some awesome video game crafts) but now that we're split, I may have to tone it down when meeting someone new

Back when I was single, I only decorated for myself. Women always seemed to like my style, so it worked in my favor. But I always had nice stuff too, which helps.

As long as your place doesn't look like:

1) The home of a Serial Killer.

2) The home of a dirty pig cluttered with boxes.

or

3) The home of a 14 year old child.

I think you'll be fine. Just present a sanitary and well kept home, don't leave dishes unwashed or dirty clothes on the floor.

What does a serial killer home look like

You're not taking away my figurines and game boxes. They're orderly, clean and know the rules of the house. And all on an appropriate shelf

On a more serious note: I do of course clean up, and I like to vary my decoration. But i hate the idea of having to hide my nerdiness. However I do like art and try to decorate sensibly. Took a lot of time to organize shelves, find some good frames for certain pictures and whatnot
