Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

I don't have HBAO+ on and that cutscene was low FPS for me too.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure these are just weird sections of the games that have bugs/insane performance issues. For instance, the intro had a few spots that ran like ass similarly to this cutscene, and I played through that without HBAO+.

Finally got around to play it and I've got the strange feeling that Gsync isn't working with the game correctly? Performance is good, around 45~60fps at 1440p maxed out with an i5 4570 but I can totally feel the framerate differences while panning unlike in other games I've played with Gsync. Sb else feeling the same? It sounds weird and obviously I can't really measure if Gsync is working or not. It says on in the display OSD though.

Maybe I'll try to unlock the framerate and see if it helps

Another new beta paaatch~

Beta 1.006 has been released.

Changelist:

- The game sometimes stopped progression once "Mission 29" or "Mission 42" were cleared while having Quiet as a buddy. This issue was fixed.

- The game sometimes stopped progression during the tutorial when the player first acquires FOBs, while using a gamepad. This issue was fixed.

I am liking how fast these patches are coming in.

Hey guys, I'm having some problems with Geforce Experience. When I go to optimize the game I'm told that the client is "unable to retrieve current settings. Please restart the game" like some reported in this thread https://forums.geforce.com/default/...ear-solid-phantom-pain-in-geforce-experience/

However, their fix doesn't work for me. program files/steam/userdata only contains folders with numbers.

Potential solutions I've already tried: restart computer, verify integrity of game cache with steam, reinstalled Geforce experience, reinstalled the latest drivers, rolled back to previous drivers, booted the game in fullscreen, windowed, and fullscreen borderless.

I'm able to set my game how I like other than the resolution. Geforce experience lets me know that I'm able to utilize DSR but because I can't optimize the game I can't utilize that feature. Is there any way to utilize DSR outside of clicking "optimize" in the Nvidia Geforce client?

Specs:
i5-3570
GTX 970
8gb ram
Windows 10

Sure. Open the NV control panel, navigate to 3D settings and select the wanted DSR factors there, then hit apply.

I can definitely sense a difference between 45 and 60 FPS in other games. Maybe it's just that?

Anyway, my monitor's display options can also confirm whether or not G-Sync is in effect and I've seen no reason to doubt its accuracy.

I dunno, ever since I started using Gsync games felt way smoother once they hit the 45fps+ range.
Not sure if it's just placebo, maybe in this case it's some weird framepacing or sth? As I said, I'll try to unlock the framerate in my next session and see if it helps (or placebo kicks in lol)

Yo THANK YOU.

This is my first Nvidia GPU after years with AMD and I felt pretty clueless. Will get to play the game in glorious resolution after work :)

I hope they fix the massive performance drops in some cutscenes.
So far I've had one under the bed or thereabouts in the beginning cutscene and I think first time I arrived to Africa.

You using HBAO+ forced through the nvidia drivers? Those performance drops are due to that on Nvidia's side, I was hoping there'd be a response from them about that by now.

Has anyone reported the frame drop problems in the Steam community threads? They might not be aware of it, and we seems to have a pretty precise understanding of where the drops happen.

Under the bed during the hospital section
Exiting the helicopter cutscene in mission 13(?)
~Some cutscene in mission 29 (I haven't played this yet)

And any others should be reported.

didn't a few people earlier in the thread say they had the same problem even without HBAO+ on?

either way it's lucky the instances of the slowdown are limited to certain cutscenes that are very far apart. hope it gets fixed though.

unrelated, but according to steamspy mgsv is currently heading to 550,000 copies on pc. it'll probably top out at over a million by october if this momentum keeps going. it's been at the top of the steam charts solidly for weeks.

On this very page few people said that the under the bed one happened before they had HBAO+ set.
I don't remember if I had HBAO+ during the opening myself.

I'm not sure if its actually tied to HBAO+? The dip under the bed in the prologue happened to me before I enabled HBAO+

I turned off HBAO+ to avoid the fps drops in certain cutscenes and still got a crazy drop
when Huey unveils the finished Battle Gear
. Not sure about the other cutscenes though.

Ah, I didn't see those. I never had drops on any of those scenes with HBAO+ disabled, so it's weird.

That scene, there's a scene with a certain npc doing exposition in the helo, the moment you set foot in Africa, and a brief dip when Ishmael rolls you under the bed in the prologue.

All tied to forced HBAO+

Yep. Those are the only performance fuckups I've had in my experience so far. The bed lockup didn't happen with the default AO on my first playthrough, I was kind of surprised to see it the second time with HBAO+ on.

I think some of the
Huey showing Battle Gear stuff miiiiight have been prerendered cutscenes

I think unlocking the framerate definitely helped with frame pacing, feels noticably smoother now. Haven't run any MSI afterburner logs etc though so YMMV

I'm on mission 29, so the only way to get good performance out of that cutscene is to temporarily turn off hbao+?
Easiest way is to turn the in-game SSAO back on, that should override the Nvidia settings. Then, after the scene, just turn it back off and the HBAO will kick in again.

Are you actually sure about that? I think it just layers the SSAO on top.

Does anyone else have an issue where some textures don't get filtered if they're a certain distance away? It's not all textures, only some, but it's really noticable. I've activated filtering in NVCP but it does nothing.

I've tried to show it in these images. Notice how the angle is exactly the same in both images, but in the latter the texture on the left side of the road has started to become filtered. Also notice how all textures except the ones beside the read are already filtered. It's kind of difficult to show in still images, but it's super noticable during movement.

I just think those are the last level mips. Not unfiltered textures.

Does anyone know exactly what effects are reduced when changing the setting from Extra High down to High? Doing so definitely fixes any dust-related frame rate drops but to my eye it still looks great. I suspect that light bloom and particle effects would also be reduced in some fashion but hopefully not enough for me to notice.

On high there are a lot less alpha planes / sprites and the shadows that cast through them are hard edge and unfiltered. Extra high softens them.

Guys, are you all playing with DoF On or Off?
I've been playing with it on, but I'm still not sure I like it, sometimes, it blurs the wrong things...

The only thing that bothers me is the lack of any proper AA solution. Injecting AA doesnt seem to work and hardware AA seems to be a thing of the past :/

Just played a few hours on the PS4, my brother bought it for his PS4, the difference is really noticeable compared to the PC version. The shadows, AA, AF is much much worse, I thought the gap wouldn't really be that noticeable. There also seems to be some weird audio problems with the PS4 game, every time I turn around when someone talks I can't hear them unless the camera is facing them...? I've played the PC version for almost 50 hours now and haven't come across that issue.

I'll be playing MGO3 on there soon but for everything else I guess I'll stick to the PC one.

There is a scene on the R&D platform of mother base with Huey.

Where Huey is finishing building the battle gear where there are blue electrical flashes from the canon being primed

That was the only time I've had my frame rate tank to single digits from the steady 60 I was getting all game.

Anyone else?
Yup, same here. Clearly something they overlooked in that cutscene.

I love DoF. I'm playing with it off. Its refusal to focus correctly when using binocoulars means I can't really use it all that comfortably.

I'm getting a lot of frame hitching. The game drops 1-3 frames randmoly while i'm playing and I have no idea why. I've moved everything to high and from reading this fourm, i should be able to stay at extra high.

Specs;
i7 920 @ 3.4ghz
12gm ram
780 stock

Are you playing with v-sync on, or in borderless windowed mode? Have you unlocked your framerate?

Vsync is on in game. no i have not unlocked my frame rate, how do i do that? the game only give me the option for auto. And i've tried full screen and borderless and i was still having this issue.

If I remember correctly I also get a lot of stuttering when using in-game v-sync. Try unlocking you framerate and forcing v-sync through NVCP, that might help.

You can read how to unlock the framerate here, it's super simple:
