2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

No, there are only a handful of laptops that even ship with a BRD, and they're all really expensive.

I'd just buy a slim USB 3.0 Blu-ray drive.

I was just minding my own business while browsing and I found this on IGN. Is this a good deal?

Lenovo Y40-80 With i7 Processor, 14-inch 1080p Display And Radeon R9 2GB GPU

Use code USPY4NUS93 to get this Lenovo Y40-80 gaming laptop for $649.

I'm not sure if this is ideal for my college needs though?

What would make that a better deal than what I suggested?
$769 vs $649. It's cheaper but I'm not really liking it. It's a gaming laptop first, everything else second.
The best way to do this is get a laptop with a dvd drive, buy a slim internal bluray, and install the new drive. Just have to swap the face plates viola!
Yeah, it's not really a big issue. I'll survive. An external blu ray should cover my needs.

Hi all,

I am looking for a gaming laptop in Israel. Prices a1re crazy here, but I am looking for a thin machine, and have been looking into a razer blade or maybe a msi ghost pro.

i prefer a 14-15" monitor.

self building is pretty out of the question, since I don't know of any stores that give such an option, and shipping form out of the country is not really an option at this time.

any suggestion or assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from my current laptop to something more powerful. I bought that one on the recommendation of users in this thread and it worked out well for me so I thought you'd be the ones to ask again.

Country: USA
Max Budget: $1,000 - $1,500 (preferably on the lower end but if higher end offers substantial performance increases, go for it)
Planned Usage: Primary PC, general usage and heavy gaming. Want something that can run current/future games at High to Ultra at the display's native resolution. Example games include Alien: Isolation, Elite: Dangerous, Fallout 4, Far Cry 4, GTA5, Mad Max (this was the straw that broke the camel's back, its minimum requirements are more than my current laptop can bear), Witcher 3, etc. Current laptop has a 15.6" 1366x768 display, would prefer 1080p at this point as well as an optical drive. SSD would be nice but not required. Portability and battery life aren't a consideration, it will be plugged into the mains at all times anyway. (Yes, I know a desktop would be more suitable but I don't want to deal with a tower and separate display and my laptop has been my primary PC since 2011 so I know what I'm getting into.)

If you need any further info just ask. Thanks for your assistance.

The Y510P is a model from 2013. It's a decent laptop, but you should get something more modern.
The Y50-70 you linked is from 2014. The Y50's 4K screen only goes up to 48Hz, which is unacceptable for a large number of games.

755M SLI and 860M are about equal on paper, but the 860M will support more games and generate far less heat, and the 4GB VRAM helps, too.

If you want a Lenovo, look for the 2015 model Y50 with a 1080P IPS.

I think I already asked this like three times in this thread or similars, but I'm looking for a new laptop. My max budget would be 800-1000€. I took a look at the Lenovo Z50-70 with 16GB and 840M of 4GB, but looking for information I mostly saw that it wouldn't be able to use more than 2GB so it would be rather useless. I live in Spain, and I'd like it to be 15.6" so it can fit on my laptop bag, and with a TB if possible. Thanks guys!

Sorry, not sure what you mean by that?

The Asus has a 128GB SSD + a 1TB HDD, unheard of in a laptop this "cheap".

Go Ghost Pro.

This one.

Yeah won't be able to buy that in amazon. But those prices in that site is inflated, I can probably get that 300 less in other shops.

I was just wondering what would be better, the dual 2GB GT755 or 4GB GTX860

Take the 860M. The 755M SLI has heating issues and aren't worth the SLI hassle.

Need links to Spanish stores, but I'd just look for the Lenovo Y50 anyway.

Can anyone recommend me a gaming laptop that will simply play all pre-2014 games on max. settings?

I'll mainly be playing Civ V (2010) on it (I'd need max. settings and for it to run smoothly on standard map at least), and the odd older game like GTA IV, AC2, Mass Effect 2, Arkham Asylum, Dark Souls, etc. These would also need to be max'd and run smoothly.

I don't need anything that can run the likes of Tomb Raider with TressFX, or GTA V on max. settings at 4k or something crazy because I play new releases at home on my desktop.

Also, 15.6" screen size would be fine. I live in the UK btw!

Edit: Weight and battery life a non issue. It will be plugged in at work and only moved when unpacking it from my laptop bag and repacking it at the end of the shift.

For those of you who have ordered from PCSpecialist before, is it normal for a laptop order to still be on "processing" on the fifth working day? I'm a little concerned that the laptop isn't going to be here by the time I leave at this rate...

Budget is more important than anything.

Call them and voice your time constraints.

All Y50s use Maxwell 860Ms
Alrighty, I think I'm gonna grab that one but I've been also looking on retail stores (so if there's any problem I can leave it there) and I saw an Asus ROG GL552 for 999, though if you're a member of the store's membership plan you get a 5% off, making it cheaper than the Y50-70. It's not the 4k one, but an HD one with a 950. Should I grab that one instead? Or is it at least in the same level of quality?

EDIT: nevermind, the 950 is worse than the 860 it seems, I'll grab the Y50 then

REEDIT: well shit, I just found the 4k y50-70 with 960 for 955€, I think it must be a mislabel but if it is I can just return it since it's sold by Amazon. It's a insanely good price.

The Y50 KJack linked has the crap TN screens; its model number starts with 5943. Avoid. The only Y50s worth getting are the ones with IPS screens, model number starting with 5944 (also characterized by having i7-4720hq cpus).
4k Y50s are ok but be wary the screens do not go higher than 48Hz IIRC.

Edit: The Y50 on Lenovo's site should be a good buy: http://shop.lenovo.com/es/es/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/

:/

I'm watching Linus' review and he says that isn't much of a problem... If it wasn't by the fact that 1080p games were displayed in a tiny box :/ don't know if that got fixed...
The tiny box sounds like an Intel Graphics misconfiguration, i.e. set to "center image" instead of "maintain aspect ratio." Though I'm concerned if that's actually the case if Linus couldn't figure it out.
Personally I play a lot of bullet hell games and a lot of emulated games, and those all demand a refresh rate of 60Hz, so a 48Hz screen is a deal-breaker for me.
If 48Hz isn't a big deal and you are absolutely confident in your ability to return it for a full refund, then I'd go for it. Heck you might be able to confirm some things about the 4k Y50 for us.

I don't know, I think I'll go for the normal, 1080p with 860M. there's not much difference between 860 and 960,right?

Correct, 860 and 960 are the same exact chip and the differences are minor.
Just be sure to get the 2015 Y50 from Lenovo's site so you get a proper IPS screen.
Alternatively, search other sites for a Y50 with model number starting with 5944 and a i7-4720HQ cpu; it's the only way to guarantee a Y50 that doesn't have a crap screen.

If this is confusing, blame Lenovo for making the 2014 Y50 with a crap screen in the first place lol.

Disclaimer: I have a Y50 from Lenovo's US site. They sent me a crap screen Y50 even though the site advertised IPS, because the model number was 5942xxxx. After much customer support I exchanged it for a Y50 with a proper screen, model number 5944xxxx.

Just found a 5944, or at least I think it is. It even has a 960M. The thing is, do I buy this one or the 4k one, which is actually cheaper? (by 50 bucks, but cheaper)

Budget is more important than anything.

Well I was more thinking about it will cost what it costs. If it's beyond my budget, I'll leave it there, but if I can easily scoop one up, I'll go for it.

But just for the hell of it, for playing games 2014 or hell I'd be willing to slump to 2013 games and older, so long as I can max them all, and I'd be willing to pay £600 to do that on a laptop at work. BUT... if I can pay a lot less, I'd be happy.

Not interested in a high quality webcam intergrated to stream or something, or any other bells and whistles. Will be playing with earphones so no need for top quality sound either. Just to be able to run those games at max. settings with the ability to plug in a controller and have a 1080p screen.

Go with the 1080p IPS model, the 4k screen is said to be terrible. Besides, with the 960M you'd get a miserable experience running games at 4k.

Sorry for the double post, but it's done, I have ordered the 1080p IPS Y50-70. It should arrive between tomorrow and next monday. Now, I'll need to backup all the stuff.

Take one of these, add a Core i3 and 8GB RAM, then decide on storage.

Let is know what you think of it!

Never said thanks. Been mulling it over and I think that is one of the better deals I've seen for what I'm looking to do. Will most likely be going with that.

Well now this is now a really good deal, amazing really.

I need a new laptop. I found this one http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/a1-r...4gb-500gb-dvd-1-a1-r510cc-xx1304h/version.asp and was wondering if it was any good. Are laptops direct legit? I'd be looking to upgrade the ram to 8gb.

I basically need it for general use and would like to play some games. As long as I can play football manager I'll be happy.
Seems fine for FBM

Country where it will be purchased: United States
Maximum budget: $1200
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): 15.6 is the largest, but down to a 12" is fine
Planned usage: Light gaming, more of a daily use machine and streaming and integration into a HT set up

Other things I'm looking for: A must is an IPS (or similar) display...TN displays just make me sad. Display at least 1080p or more. I also need an RJ-45 input, this is something I cannot do without.

One other note is I don't mind upgrading a machine. So having to upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a SSD, or a RAM upgrade is not big deal to me. In fact I would like to have a machine where I could perform these upgrades down the road.

Nope, just a slight clock increase.

This, amazing value.

This will work.
I like the Zenbook

Product not found. Also, I think I'd prefer a 17 inch screen. And I've heard that sager has poor build quality. Anything more reliable and easy to clean?

Update: my laptop is now smoking when plugged in. It smells like but computer components in my room, and I think I have cancer.

RIP Asus G72Gx 2009-2015

Edit:

I found a deal for a new Gigabyte P37xV4 with a 17.3 inch IPS display, i7 5700HQ (Broadwell), GTX 980M 8GB, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD (7200RPM), Blu-Ray Writer, and 16 GB DDRL3 RAM, for $1700. Comes with Windows 8.1 too.

It'll be here on Thursday :)
