Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki) getting Limited Edition

I'm confused as a newcomer since a Tear of Vermillion after reading the last two pages :/

Tear of Vermilion is technically also part of the Legend of Heroes series, but at this point, it's better to think of it as a different series entirely, because the differences FAR outweigh the similarities.

The English PSP version of it and the other two Gagharv games, too, was released by Bandai, not by us, so there aren't even any localization similarities.

Sorry if this has been answered but is the Vita version PlayStation TV compatible?

I hesitate to say yes, given our previous Vita history with Falcom, but Cold Steel's been Vita TV-compatible in Japan since launch, so I see no reason our version wouldn't be PSTV-compatible.

We likely won't know 100% for certain, though, until the game is out.

The Legend of Heroes is a series kind of like Final Fantasy where they have a ton of games with different settings and all that. However, they have a strong singular universe for a large number of them. Tear of Vermillion is a part of an early Legend of Heroes trilogy called the Gagharv Trilogy. It's unrelated to the games that have "Kiseki" in them or "Trails of" although they belong to the same overall umbrella.

Thanks Tom.

After recently playing through Trails in the Sky FC this summer, which I adore very much, I'm more than looking forward to playing Trails of Cold Steel and Cold Steel II in the future too. Although I wish there were PC versions of these games, I'd be happy to purchase a PlayStation Vita if it means I'll be able play more Trails games in English.

And of course I'm very excited for Trails in the Sky SC as well. I deeply appreciate how open and communicative of XSEED Games has been of their progress on getting the game finished. I follow all the updates and am glad to hear that it sounds like the wait is almost over! May everything go as smoothly as possible.

I hope the Gagharv trilogy is re-released and/or retranslated at some point in the future.

I'd like to see XSEED release the original PC versions sometime in the future but that would probably be a lot of effort to get them running nicely on modern systems (plus translating them), and they probably don't have much sales potential. Maybe if the Trails series becomes successful enough they can roll off it's extremely tenuous ties.

Along those same lines, I sort of hope the PC game Ghostlight is teasing is Cold Steel. It loosely fits the description they have given (vague as that is), Ghostlight was the publisher for Trails in Europe, and it would make sense to get the game on the platform since it is where the rest of the series would likely end up (assuming they get localized). But there is practically no chance this is the case.

I played 2 of the Gagharv games but by the third the terrible localisation was just too much to be able to enjoy it. Xseed would do a far better job but I'd take the slim possibility of them considering Ao and Zero over these every time.

I'd like Ghostlight to have had the rights to CS, Ross from Ghostlight is a huge fan of FC and it was a shame they lost out to NISA. Is there even a PC version of this game though? And why would it not be handled by NISA or Xseed themselves if there were?

Vita and ps3* only, however, Ghostlight actually has the ability to port games, Xseed doesn't.....and then Nisa....
has their heads up their ass
does not see PC as being viable.

Vita and PS3. I'm going for PS3 but I'd definitely buy it again if they did somehow get a PC version out at some point in the future.

Both Hatsuu and I have been lobbying to work on the PC Gagharv games, actually. For Hatsuu, it's largely a matter of the Legend of Heroes bug biting her very hard -- for me, it's because White Witch (or Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch, as it's better known in the West) is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and I'd feel almost honored to be able to work on it.

I don't see it happening anytime soon, but you've got at least two people from XSEED in your corner on this one, so maybe one of these days, we'll be able to somehow pull this off. ;)

Always getting us into trouble with your optimism, Tom. :)

This sounds better than your previous post, though I still feel that if you're not 100% certain that SC will release before Cold Steel you should either say nothing on the subject or say "I'm not sure exactly when the release dates will fall because we're still in the process of working things out." That's a totally acceptable answer!

I appreciate your enthusiasm for the games you work on. I really do. But it has been my observation that your enthusiasm leads you at times to say things that you would be better off not saying. There is a reason why companies tend to keep a tight leash on the information their employees divulge - not just game companies, as in the recent case of the Nintendo Treehouse localizer who was fired after speaking frankly on a podcast, but all companies. There was a reason why when I previously worked in Apple technical support I was very cautious about what I would say about the (little) information I was privy to, both online and to my friends and family. It's important for a company to monitor and control its PR to prevent misinformation that could be harmful to the company from spreading. XSEED may be a small company, and may not like to run things in a "corporate" manner, but it's still important that it watches what its employees say, especially when they're acting as representatives of the company as you are doing here on NeoGAF. In some instances, having a "company line" is necessary.

To give a related example, currently Atlus is publicly stating that Persona 5 will be released in the US in 2015. I believe them, because they have never deviated from that statement and have not given me any reason to doubt their PR statements. However, if Persona 5 does end up missing that 2015 date the credibility of Atlus will be hurt in my eyes and it will give me greater pause in believing what their employees say in the future and in desiring to support their products.

(Note: I'm a bit late to this with my reply, but I had half typed up before I went out today, so sorry if it's retreading ground.)

I'd say the candidness is part of our (sometimes clumsy and often absurd if you follow any of the media accounts) charm, but I still think it's a long sight better than being afraid to say anything or having to screen your statements through a marketing department. I should add that the 'marketing department' is also just one part VP and one part stressed out chica at the moment, so it's not like they have the manpower or energy to do such a thing, anyway. While it does see us putting our foot in it sometimes, I don't think we've shied away from trying to explain or make amends for whatever's been goofed. Everything you see online from the XSEED twitter to the Facebook to Tumblr to the forums are other XSEED employees working outside their actual job descriptions and usually on their own time. We do it because we like talking to people, want to explain our projects, and enjoy posting cat pictures, not because we're PR mouthpieces or trying to market.

Tom spends a lot of his own time managing the XSEED forums, and trying to answer stuff on GAF and elsewhere to be helpful, but as he said, as much as the company is a small outfit, you don't know every little detail of the project stages if they're not yours. For example, as chaosblade corrected Aeana, editing was done back in Jan, but aside from the immediate SC team or people following me on twitter, it wouldn't have been specifically known to say, Tom or Ryan or Kelly, etc. There are just so many projects going on at once that's it's impossible to keep up with every detail even though general meetings are had to round-up the week. But, just asking for clarification usually nets you the correct answer because we'll check. So, I know that conflicting info is confusing, but it's usually borne out of a desire to give people a response, not to mislead or 'go off leash'.

Anyway, I can't imagine XSEED ever going the corporate way, but I'm sure we can improve on the confusing stuff, so, uh, go, 2016?

Props to all of you guys at XSEED. People like to get riled up and entitled and it's easy to respond negatively, so thank you for always being optimistic and open about everything to the extent that you guys can be.

One of the main reasons I have no problem buying day 1 for your products. Cheap Steam sales are great, but sometimes honest work needs to be rewarded.

Well said. These guys will always have my support, they deserve it.

Just wanted to add how much I hugely appreciate XSEED's communication on here, steam community, and even the couple of tweets I've had. Under time constraints, I don't always have the time to sift through pages of info and their posts usually cut straight through any questions / uncertainties I've had. It does get rewarded with purchases :)

Currently I just wish for an EU LE.

I can attempt to summarize it for you in an easy to digest fashion.

Legend of Heroes is a long-running RPG series with a ton of branches.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Heroes

The sixth entry in the main Legend of Heroes series is three separate 'parts' that are each their own title. Trails in the Sky First Chapter, Second Chapter and 3rd (3rd is an epilogue). The seventh entry is the two games Trails of Zero and Trails of Azure. The eighth entry is Trails of Cold Steel 1 and Trails of Cold Steel 2.

The last Trails game we got, First Chapter, was the latest thing to get localized - Second Chapter is the conclusion to that story, and it is supposedly going to arrive before Cold Steel. With the release of Cold Steel, XSEED is skipping 3rd, Zero and Azure and going straight to the newest duology.

Does that make sense?

Apologies, I didn't mean the chronological order of the series, but the discussion about which game was getting a localised release first. There seemed to be two different responses, going from the end of page 4 to page 5, which confused me slightly, but I'm not really bothered which comes first in all honesty. I'm just happy they're both coming, I've only ever played FC and I adored it.

Ah, yeah, that's sort of the issue here.

As I understand it from the information available to me at the office, we're still completely on track to release SC well before Cold Steel, which was the plan from the start.

The reason for the confusion is because someone asked on our Facebook if Cold Steel would be coming out before SC, and one of us posted a response that read, "Yep, yep."

I know who posted that response, and I strongly suspect he misread the question, but he's in Japan for TGS right now, so I can't reasonably check with him until he gets back. Like I said, it was proooooobably a mistake on his part, but he is very much my senior in the company, and he's privy to a lot more information than the rest of us, so he might very well know something we don't. I don't think that's the case, but I can't discount the possibility, which is why we're not planning on removing or clarifying the Facebook comment -- the answer to the question is now somewhat under dispute.

That reminds me, is there a way to transfer my save data from my PSP memory card to a Vita by any means? I played FC so long ago that I'm considering getting it on the Vita and playing it again, but curious if I can't. Plus my old save I missed a side quest or 2 so now I can get 100%

I hope you get your answer, and good luck, but I don't think that'll work.

Not only that, all the small sidequests that prevent you from getting 100% BP are really easy to miss and timed, meaning you're going to have to start a new save file anyway.

I actually played through the entirety of FC again on PC years after I beat PSP on a 100% BP run to prep for SC's release.

Haven't tried this myself but it sounds like it should work:

1. Start a psp game on your vita and create a save file (skip this step if you already have a psp save file on your vita)

2. Connect it to PC and open content manager

3. Transfer the save to the PC

4. Find out where that save was transferred to. The folder is usually:

C:/> users > username > documents > PSVITA > PSAVEDATA > (a folder that just has numbers and letters) > in here is where you should find the psp saves

5. Plug your PSP into your PC and find your save files ( folder is in PSP > SAVEDATA)

6. Transfer the saves you want (or all of them) to the folder on PC that we found where the vita backs the psp saves to (the letter/number folder in PSAVEDATA)

7. Open content manager on vita and choose PC -> PSVITA

8. Choose applications > psp saves and check mark all the ones you want on your vita

So did I, in January. Probably forgotten all the little bits of NPC storyline again by now. Have to stop myself from trying to get another play through in every weekend.

I didn't know that this thread had gone in this direction.

I just wanted to say that I love Xseed and really appreciate the sincerity and openness with the community and their fans, never change.

And yeah keep giving me Falcom games, in any order and take as much time as you need, I'll always be there day one.

Why wouldn't you?

I'm listening to my personal copy of Perfect Collection Dragon Slayer II right now.

i'm listening to Pet Shop Boys, but i'd totally listen to falcom music if i wanted to

actually, when i'm changing clothes i usually listen to this, which is def good clothes changing music

You should be able to do this no problem. There's a folder in Content Manager Assistant specifically for PSP save-data -- all you need to do is copy your PSP save-data into that folder, then load up Content Manager on your Vita and copy it over.

The whole Content Manager/Content Manager Assistant thing is definitely a pain in the butt compared to the easy data management present on the PSP, but... well, that's what piracy does, I guess. It's the reason we can't have nice things. ;)

Do I need to have played the other LoH games to enjoy this one? I've never played any but to be honest I don't have the means to and don't really want to go back at this point. Is this its own self contained game?

The 'Trails' games all take place in the same universe, there is a detailed and indepth meta-plot that is being advanced if you played all the games.

Trails in the Sky First Chapter and Second Chapter are a duology. 3rd is an epilogue to that story.

Trails of Zero and Trails of Azure are a duology that springs off of 3rd, set in a different country.

Trails of Cold Steel and Trails of Cold Steel II are another duology set in another, different country, but Falcom specifically designed the Cold Steel games to be a nice 'jumping in' point where you don't have to play the games before them to enjoy it.

However, all of the games are connected and characters from each story appear in each other's games -

So to answer you in a quick word, no. You don't have to. There are a bunch of allusions and side things you may not 'get,' but that's okay - Falcom wants you to jump in at Cold Steel.

Apologies if my question has already been answered, though I'm sure it hasn't been yet here, but do we know if we're going to get an Amazon link for the LE pre-orders? Is Amazon set to be stocking them anyway?

They do stock XSeed LEs, no reason why Cold Steel should be any different.

Got my preorder ready at Amazon

I for one think the reason we are all so demanding of XSEED is that we all hold them in high regards. They release great products, all their games are fun, the localization work is quite thorough, and their transparency on so many communication avenues is a blessing.

So when they f-up we just like to tell it to them how it is. =)

That being said. Amazon CS pre-order link when Tom?
