Yeah, I didn't get that.

Just have him be an amnesiac. He wouldn't have a memory, so he might doubt his own identity, and that would be a more interesting story to watch play out. He knows the events but he doesn't know them as his own past.

The only other thing would be knowing CQC and how to operate guns, but that would be more soldier muscle memory anyway.

Yup, and it's not like Big Boss and his life is a big secret. I'm pretty sure I heard soldiers at Motherbase talking about the events of Snake Eater at one point. Venom wouldn't need to know everything to be morphed into a phantom Big Boss.

I just got to the part in Africa where Venom encounters Skullface while searching for the leader of the Orphan Boys, and then the Man on Fire and Mantis attack.

They don't explain why Mantis, Man on Fire, and Skullface are working together, do they?

One of MGSV's biggest errors is that Snake can't use a motorcycle in the game. It would just make great gameplay even better. They even designed the perfect goddamn bike for him.

The vehicles in this game suck balls, but a motorcycle would be rad. Customized to go off-road, get into chases and shit, that'd be rad.

Lust for revenge.

Pretty much everything comes down to a lust for revenge.

Such a missed opportunity. They did that whole cross promotion for a bike that is used in exactly one cutscene and has like 20 seconds of screen time at most in a 50+ hour game.

you got the order wrong. skull face had to have been exiled to africa before he attacks zero, because otherwise he can't have the parasites to attack zero with

nah but during the tape when Zero visits Big Boss he tells him that he sent Skull Face to Africa after he poisoned him.

This is never explicitly stated in the game though

Yes, it is. It's in one of the tapes I listened to tonight, not sure which.

The tapes really do explain a lot, guys. It's worth your time to dig through them, even if you hate the story.

They do.

He never met Big Bawse.

He didn't?

I thought it said that he met him once in Russia or something?

You know, the fact that we're all so confused over basic things like why a person attacked the main character, and whether not people actually met isn't a sign of a quality narrative.

I feel like for all its problems, the story of MGS2 is easier to wrap your head around than this.

Twice, once in the Honey Bee mission and once in Mission 30.

Edit: Three times actually, another in the Devil's House.

I'm so confused. ;_;

I don't think it was a decision, more like they were forced to after running out of time and money.

I would agree there usually, but there is just SO much useless content that is there which could have been cut instead.

I mean the lead-up to Code Talker is one thing that bothers me. For some reason you now have Big Boss chasing up the random leads that the Intel team picks up. In other MGS games it would have just been mentioned in a briefing that one of my 600 odd mercs had handled the grunt work and saved the necessary scientists and shit that led to this mission to save Code Talker.

I mean, I know it isn't just a simple "Well fuck it let's just cut it out because why not?" but there had to have been some VERY bad management decisions made on someone's part to get in this situation.

I mean, the game is NOT low on content. It is just low on MEANINGFUL content.

I mean fuck, they show Eli stealing the mech during that little trailer video after Chapter 1.....and that is basically the entire pay-off you get can get out of that plot...shown as a trailer.
Gah..... Just thinking about it makes me angry.

At least with MGS2 (or past MG games) you could at least work out motivations for characters and reasons for their actions. Even if it took digging into a codec or wrapping you head around a 15 minute info dump.

Then do tell, how does Skull Face know Big Boss is in Cyprus?

Well that is obviously because a plane carrying a small psychic child crashed after exploding into a ball of flames somewhere over Cyprus (or Russia. I don't know) when BB (Venom) woke up which triggered the lust for revenge in Volgin which woke him up.

(I don't know. I'm starting to question if Volgin waking up even makes sense when he wakes up because of Venom waking up, a character he doesn't care about).

Yup. Would make for a great escape vehicle too; "I'll leave this right her and escape with it".

A really well-designed motorbike could have really made the open world navigation fun.

Man, we really needed that motorcycle. That would have been cool.

How long till we can make a post-mortem thread dissecting the game? It's still early days, I know.

Yes, Skull Face never met Big Boss, Naked Snake, Jack.

He only got to met Venom Punished Snake, the one with the missing arm and shrapnel on his head.

The actual Big Boss probably never knew who Skull Face was, or that he even existed in the first place.

If Volgin actually woke up when Big Boss woke up, then that hospital should have been burned to the ground before Venom even opened his eyes.

From the coma...that he didn't need to be in...because he was awake after the chopper crash...

Real Big Boss

Oh ok. Yeah was talking about Venom. Didn't see the "real"

If he actually woke up when Big Boss woke up that hospital shuld have been bured to the ground before Venom even opened his eyes.

From the coma...that he didn't need to be in...because he was awake after the chopper crash...

;_; nothing makes sense any more. The stuff with Volgin and lusting for revenge and rage made sense at the time through tapes because I was all "sure. rage can wake magic men from comas. ok".

Now I've not listened to the tapes in a while so stay with me here.

1) Mantis is flying in plane over Russia
2) Big Boss (real) wakes up from a coma
3)Volgin (in Russia somewhere) wakes up because of psychic link knowing BB is alive and wanting to kill him
4)Lust for revenge triggers in Mantis bringing the plane down in flames and linking Mantis to Volgin
5) Mantis and Volgin fly (via ESP) to Cyprus (because of lusting for revenge tracking)
6) arrive when XOF is there leading to a clusterfuck and the only reason both BB and V escape

Right?

Honestly the very first thing I noticed regarding Venom not being BB, was way back during the trailers and shit. VS wasn't straight up missing his right eye like BB should be (in Snake Eater para-medic or Snake says something along the lines of it being popped, IIRC?).

nah but during the tape when Zero visits Big Boss he tells him that he sent Skull Face to Africa after he poisoned him.

iirc he just says "Skull Face is in Africa and I don't think he's coming back". I interpreted this as Skullface was exiled to Africa prior and has now gone into hiding and won't be coming back to the states because Zero will off him if he pops his head up. Hard to say though.

Right?

Not quite, unless it took more than a few months for Volgin to fly to cyprus.

Big Boss wakes up a good time before Venom to discuss the plan.

And even then,

Once venom wakes up it's weeks before the attack, because we see 'one week after awakening' 'two' and finally 'three' before the attack.

And thus another plot hole....

I know venom needs time to recuperate but fucking come on, big boss has to sit about in that hospital in a full headwrap for like a month waiting for Venom to learn to walk (which in the end is actually handwaved with a injection of dio-whatever anyway)

The second that dude has his eyes open get the fuck out of the hospital as your location may be compromised.

AND JESUS CHRIST SPLIT VENOM AND BB UP! if they're seen together in the same room the Jig is up.

Revenge is the underlying theme and much like Kojima's other themes (particularly genes and memes) wrapped around the idea of "passing on" concepts often as literal manifestations. Characters are driven by revenge and ultimately blinded by it, usually leading to a downfall or stress.

Volgan manifests as he is driven by revenge from beyond the grave.
Mantis is empty, and intentionally/unintentionally taps into the desire for revenge in others to manifest his powers.
Skullface does everything he does because of revenge, particularly against Zero and the world order Zero intends to pressure onto the world.
Eli is driven by revenge against his father and upbringing due to loathing the purpose he was made and belief he is inferior.
Skullface uses Mantis' power by tapping into his own will for revenge to control Metal Gear. this is why he's surprised and SUCH A LUST FOR REVENGE when it becomes active again without his intentions, due to it now utalising Eli's will for revenge.
Kaz is driven by revenge against anyone and everyone he suspects implicated in the attack on Mother Base, driving him to paranoia and blind (literally?) rage.
The scripted mother base attack was from an old MSF soldier driven by revenge against Big Boss, who he thought was responsible for the original massacre.

Ocelot is the only one not driven by revenge.
Venom is probably supposed to be "revenge" extracted from Big Boss, while Big Boss goes into hiding, essentially throwing in the towel temporarily and sitting quietly scheming while Cipher/Skullface/Whoever has the upper hand and that drive to continue fighting and seeking revenge sits with others.
Whooooooooooooooo

Honestly the very first thing I noticed regarding Venom not being BB, was way back during the trailers and shit. VS wasn't straight up missing his right eye like BB should be (in Snake Eater para-medic or Snake says something along the lines of it being popped, IIRC?).

But Ishmael had his right eye intact (but blind) at the intro of TPP. I don't recall specifically what was said in MGS 3 about it.

wait you're right. was skull face infected with parasites or what? I never understood that particular plot point at all. I remember code talker saying hahaha you probably got infected with all the parasites except english what with all the bullshit you were doing, but did he have the magical skin parasites like quiet/the rest of the skulls or what?

I finally got around to listening to most of the hamburger tapes and I'm devastated that Hideo "Food Porn" Kojima inserted masturbatory dialogue on how great chemicals pumped into burgers are.

Scrub Tier Burger Eater. Trash. Learn good burgers.

I think he had a type of magic parasite that protected him or healed him because of his skin? Maybe?

It would have made a good twist/boss fight for him to reveal that he does have the super parasites and you fight him like that. Could even still have his ending by having the end opf the fight something falls on him/you make something fall on him.

Code Talker mentions Skull Face has parasites that keep him alive, due to his burns at all, similar to what he has.

Yeah, but where's my motorcycle in all this? Is not giving me my Triumph Konami's revenge?

He also had Otacon claim in a 2001 game that ripped jeans didn't sell.

They did. Scrub Tier Fashionista.

Ishmael was wearing a glass eye. Don't have a source on me but I remember reading this recently.

so when did he get them? I thought he only found the defunct parasite research facility after his exile to africa, but did he get them immediately after he was burned in the weapons factory fire that destroyed his home while he was operating as an intel dude for whoever ruled his homeland (nevermind that an intel guy with a horribly disfigured face is a bad idea for a few reasons)?

ugh kojima

Regarding the ridiculous jeep ride monologue scene and the silent Venom...I like to imagine that Skullface says his whole spiel, then Venom starts to talk and the music starts up.

Skullface: Shhhh shshshsh shut up, this is my jam right here.

WHooooooOHOOOAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

and then they sit silently and listen to the whole song.

The ultimate villain of MGSV. Beaten by a falling girder.

You never get to fight him, not even once.

Nope, not even as the pilot of a vehicle like the the previous games (Liquid in Hind/Solidus in harrier/Volgin in shagohod/Liquid-Ocelot in Rey/Paz in Zeke)

Right?
Almost. 6) XOF actually followed Mantis and Volgin to Big Bosses location. It's no coincidence that they appeared at the same time.

Then do tell, how does Skull Face know Big Boss is in Cyprus?

He doesn't 100% know, but he's tracking where Volgin and Mantis go (to the hospital) and, based on Volgin's history that he personally witnessed in MGS3, decides he's gonna send in XOF just in case.

Now I've not listened to the tapes in a while so stay with me here.

Right?

No, listen to the Informant's Report. The outline is as follows:

Venom waking up triggers Psycho Mantis awakening his powers. Mantis is then transported close enough to Volgin's comatose body that he links his mind with Volgin and awakens Volgin. Volgin and Mantis then head to where Big Boss is by instinct (same location as Venom) with XOF following them. Skull Face sees the havoc they wreak and approaches Mantis/Volgin afterwards. Mantis is drawn to Skull face's lust for revenge and allows Skull Face's will to control the Man on Fire until Mantis connects with Eli in Episode 30.

Ocelot is the only one not driven by revenge.

Quiet is also driven by revenge, and notably is the only character who gives up on it.
