Does Mario Sunshine Deserve The Hate It Gets?

I played Mario Sunshine and I think it's a well made game. Yet, outside of a friend, everyone thinks it's a bad game. What are your thoughts on the game and the bad rep it gets?

GAF consensus thread, I guess.

I don't know if it deserves the hate it gets, but it definitely deserves the criticism it gets. Utterly not what I want from a Mario game.

I don't think it deserves any hate, but it's definitely one of my least favorite mainline Mario entries. I still really enjoyed it though.

It's a game with the best of intentions and a lot of cool ideas on paper, but it feels half-baked and I think it's a nightmare to play.

A lot of people like it and I tried, but I just could not.

There are pockets of a great game in there and moving around is fun but there is so much bogging it down.

Basically.

For me is just boring, can't explain exactly why, maybe the blue coins. Also Mario losing almost all his parkour-ninja moves was a letdown to me.

Its a really good game that felt the most open and acrobatic. Also probably the most graphically impressive alongside Galaxy, I don't see why it gets any hate as the game is great. It even had those amazing side levels with shadow Mario or whatever that was.

Maybe because it was the most story oriented and cinematic? I actually enjoyed that to, honestly its one of my favorite Mario games.

My controversial opinion, it's one of my favorite Mario games. Love the world and how it fits together, the vibrant colors and tropical setting, the ridiculously dumb story, and the water spraying and cleaning I actually find satisfying. Also loved the music and the side missions more than the side missions in either Mario 64 or Galaxy.

For the 3D Marios, I like Sunshine more than 64, but I like the Galaxy games a bit more than Sunshine, BUT IROnICALLY, some of my favorite Galaxy stages are Sunshine inspired.

It's not a terrible game by any means, but following Mario 64 shows its glaring faults.

It's a solid 6. I doest not deserve a remake, but it was a fun at that time.

My problem was that only 3 of the worlds were actually fun, the Blue Coins were a disaster, and some of the Shines were repetitive. The hub wold was amazing and one of the best.

The best thing about Sunshine is that the FLUDDless stages were the direct inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy.

Not really, since it still overall is a good game. I do consider it to be the worst 3D Mario, though.

I don't think too many people here think the game is bad. I've heard nothing but praise for it here. It's a very good but flawed game.

There was some Wind Waker-like skepticism around the time it came out though. The island paradise theme, FLUDD mechanic and the kiddy marketing (in the US) turned some people off from what I remember.

no, one of those games that i really loved and people that i talked with really loved too then i come to neogaf and it's been shit since the beginning.

Haven't played it but hate is a strong word.

Scrutiny. Criticism. These are words more suited to disappointing videogames.

I played this pretty recently for the first time and the controls were pretty awful (couldn't change the x- and y-axis), but it was a GREAT Mario game.

Loved flying around and shooting off like a rocket with F.L.U.D.D. Great summer game.

Didn't like the parts where they took F.L.U.D.D. away though and you had to run around giant children's blocks for some reason.

I was hoping to see a remake/remaster on Wii U to redeem the game. Looks like that won't be happening though. I think they could have made a few tweaks (blue coin counters anyone?) that would have helped show how solid the game is.

I love this game. I will never, ever understand the hate it gets. Maybe my all time favorite Mario.

It was the first (and only) Mario game I've played that felt like a chore. And the graphics actually hurt my eyes after awhile. Good job simulating being out on a bright, sunny day. That's totally what I want searing my eyeballs before bed.

I bought it, let it sit and then got around to playing it a couple of years later. I couldn't get into it, though, and didn't play a ton.

I've been secretly hoping they'd remaster it for Wii U to give me an excuse to try it again.

Worst mario after mario 2

Which one? Lost Levels or Super Mario Brothers USA?

Those are much better than Sunshine.

The weakest mainline Mario is probably the original New Super Mario Brothers on the DS. Great revival, but the game got surpassed by its sequels quick.

probably not, but all I remember is absolutely fucking LOVING mario and then putting that shit into my gamecube.. and.. what the fuck is this?

:(

I bought it recently though, and want to give it another chance. just wish it didn't have the water gun shit

It's not a bad game, and I don't hate it. It's just really unpolished and unfinished, especially for a Mario game. And the unskippable cutscenes pretty much kill all replay value.

Hate? The game is barely acknowledged most of the time.

It's not trash... it just so disappointing after Mario 64 and also the fact that is grossly overshadowed by the superior Galaxy + 3D series...

It belongs in the same boat as Wind Waker - a well-made game with great ideas, but severely undercooked.

It's not a bad game, fundamentally, it's just worse than it should be. So any hate it gets is probably undeserved, yeah.

It was way less polished than past games and the mission/level design wasn't quite up to snuff. If this were a new IP a la Splatoon, more people would've given it a pass but as a Mario game it just wasn't as good as Mario 64, the Galaxies, 3D Land, and 3D World. If they were to remake the game, huge chunks of it would have to be redone and I don't see Nintendo putting the effort into it.

I still remember being really indifferent about this game when I played it.

How do you go from mario 64 to this and not have mixed feelings,

Note sure many people really 'hate' it. It's a really good game, just not as good as other Mario games and not what people wanted from Mario.

On the bright side they took the best part of the game that everyone loved (fludd-less pure platforming on abstract designs floating in space) added gravity shenanigans and called it Mario Galaxy. So all's well that ends well.

Looks really good and plays great, but a lot of the Shines aren't much fun to acquire. And too many levels based around a gimmick like Blooper surfing, riding the roller coaster. I don't know why people hate the FLUDD so much though.

good but flawed. It was clearly rushed and as a result it's missing that layer of polish that so many other Mario games have.

Fluddless segments highlighted how great Mario was to control despite losing a chunk of his moves from Mario 64, that said there's something about the game where it was a one and done, I had zero desire to get all the shines compared to every other Mario game I've ever played.

I enjoyed the hell out of it when it first released so I have fond memories. No clue how it holds up though. Gets so much hate.

It's my favourite Mario game. I love it so much. I wish more Mario games were made in that style, and I hope every day for a Sunshine 2/Sunshine H/3D.

It does not deserve the level of hate it receives.

Gamecube era wasn't great for Mario and Zelda.

Can't really blame them after OoT/MM and Mario 64 just killed it. Those were hard to follow.

It's a great game but probably the weakest 3D game because it made a ton of mistakes.

Honestly I don't think there is another mainline Mario game with close to number of missteps the game took.

The weird story and voicing acting, lack of location variety, camera issues and the greatest challenges in the game involved taking away the supposed main gameplay mechanic.
