Phil Spencer Discusses Why FFXIV Isn't on Xbox (Contradictions?)

So if we say anything bad about Phil here, Statham will whine and bitch on twitter?? Why not do the whining and bitching here??
Some people can't handle the fact not everyone sees things as they do, so go to a place where they can get pats on the back and confirmation they've made the right decision.

For the record, I find Phil to be a better face of Xbox, but he's still from the Mattrick ilk of damage control. I still don't understand why people are holding him in such high regard when he outright lies to their faces (doesn't like third party exclusives, one of their biggest games this year is an exclusive by a third party) and all the changes he made were not altruistic changes, but made because they had no other choice. The cult of personality around Spencer still baffles me.

He's a fucking CEO. You don't say shit unless you're sure about it when you have a billion dollar company behind you. He fucked up in this interview.

Not just that, but he's the head of the entire division. He's the one who gets to make all the decisions regarding policies like this.

Are we supposed to think that Satya Nadella is the one that's against cross-platform play and that indie parity clause?

That arguement (however strong) worked when Phil was just the head of first party and Mattrick was in charge, but things are different now.

I don't think SE is rushing to make any X1 games anytime soon.

You mean "We don't give a shit until MS fill the bill for us"
Most SE games that announced at E3 and TGS didn't have Xbone version. I think we will see less Japanese games from SE for Xbone outside 2 big guns (FFXV and KHIII)

Exactly! But Phil says it's third-party dealing when it clearly isn't. That's the whole point. He knows FFIV is a thing, but this statement...

It shows that Yoshida knows, but says little about Phil Spencer knowing. I get that the point is his false statement and he did fuck up, not denying that. I just disagree with the sentiment that he did so on purpose. I think he just misremembered, which is nothing to get too worked up about.

CEO's and politicians gaffe all the time, by the way.

I'm really confused here. This obviously isn't Jason Statham the actor so who does this Twitter handle belong to and why are people making a fuss about it?

This is Gaf statham.

You know it's Gaf statham when the S in Statham isn't Cap.

:^)

I think it's fair enough to say that it's a possibility.

But throwing the blame on third-party dealing, even if he didn't know if that was the case, is super ridiculous.

Desperation at this point.

Remember that user made info card fawning all over Phil? And that PlayStation equivalent?

That's up for debate, but he's also just a guy that can misremember stuff. I think it's very far-fetched to see any ill intention here, and that's coming from someone who generally thinks Xbox can fuck right off.

He knows what he said. SE is trying for a year to get FFXIV on X1 and this stupid clause of cross play is the only thing that's stopping. He spread that disinformation in order to people think that's SE fault that FFXIV isn't on X1, and to avoid another "parity clause" problem.

Do I ever.

Yep. That was kind of weird.

Phil also comes off, for the head of a division, as really out of the loop. He doesn't seem to know anything or why policies exist. I know that's not true, but the "it's not my fault" routine doesn't work when you are in charge.

At this point, I'm unsure Phil has said anything that wasn't a lie or a half-truth.

Even "the best lineup in Xbox history" is a lie -- 2007 was way better than this year for them.

Ah okay.

Well the more I read it the more I think Spencer goofed up here. Yoshida and his statements conflict and obviously Yoshida knows better.

The question is why Spencer said that. I don't think it was an intended lie. I think because the game is so old and he just made the assumption that it was another game he could lump this in his whole 3rd parties, Sony money hat too argument.

That is some real spinning going on there by Spencer, pretending like Tomb Raider doesn't exist and painting Sony on the wall for FFXIV.
Never change MS. :/

Old? Heavensward expansion just released few months ago and Yoshida said they still worked with MS for a port. Hell, he worked with SE for that notorious deal so i bet they had to talk about this

If you're going to try to set a narrative as the head of the company (even if it's a wrong one), you should really get your facts straight before opening your mouth. Especially if the interview is on record.

I don't see how your post contribute to the topic. It's more of a petty attempt to smear a user here on NeoGAF. If you disagree with that user on Twitter, then go and tell them there.

And this is the specific posts he's linking to:

Spencer continues to say what people want to hear.

He's a great PR guy. Microsoft picked the right dude for the job, seeing how they don't really intend to listen to gamers in the long run.

i hear him speak but it dont make much sense. I thought there wasnt any deals conserning FFIV, but now Phil say there is one.

Is he trying to suggest that Sony got FFXIV as an exclusive? Weren't Square literally just saying that they wanted to bring it to Nintendo's NX. The guy needs to pay more attention if he's gonna be making stuff up.

What's so wrong with the post statham had issue with? Honestly, out of most posts in this thread, this seems to be one of the more cognitive ones.

He replied to this post twice, in fact. Very emotionally and very forcefully.

Dick move bringing twitter beef to GAF.

'Twitter beef'

Wow, the internet is amazing!

Dick move bringing twitter beef to GAF.

I wonder if it's considered fair game considering he's beefing with GAF in this tweet, not a particular user (yeah he mentioned a specific post but you know what I mean).

edit: People make comments like the one statham made all the time on GAF. I don't think they necessarily get banned for it. I don't think dude was necessarily trying to avoid the hammer.

We'll I've asked Phil to clarify. Maybe he'll answer. He is quite active on Twitter. Most likely he'll dodge it.

THE FUSS IS REAL!!!

Hopefully he responds.

He had the exact same sentiment in his post in this thread, how is it "cowardly" to say it on Twitter?

You can respond to his post on here instead of pretending to be angry about a Twitter post.

I pretend to be mad about tumblr posts.

It's a hobby of mine.

Because he's a coward and would prefer the passive aggressive route.

"I couldn't remember about FFXIV" is a safe response for him.

I responded but it seems he didn't see it... or not.

So Disaster Nebraska is the official spokesman for all of Neogaf?

Referring to Neogaf as some sort of collective enemy in this context is just a blatant pathetic pandering attempt to other twitter idiots.

But couldn't it be the case that getting the game on Xbox NOW is impossible as it's been tied down by a subsequent exclusivity deal is one likely explanation?

Say for instance MS approached SE and asked, yo, wanna bring this to Sexbox? Don't worry about that cross play stuff. Well ignore that.

SE says no can do. Time's gone by and Sony and I got a good thing going. Even came to my daughters wedding and shieee.

You know what I mean? Basically due to an effluxion of time, the dynamic of the partnership has meant that some sort of exclusivity has naturally come about?

... Maybe

make senses, maybe the interviewer used SE naming generator and it pulled out Final Fantasy XIV/2

It's an MMO that's doing well, and that's rare these days. There's always time to deal.

If Sony got in some sort of third-party deal I'd be surprised, because they didn't need to. It was always coming to PS3/4, so there was no reason to make deals.

Wow, the internet is amazing!

No moreso than bringing GAF beef to Twitter.

Huh? One's words and actions are the sum of them online.

I wonder if it's considered fair game considering he's beefing with GAF in this tweet, not a particular user (yeah he mentioned a specific post but you know what I mean).

If he's got something to say, he should create a thread and try to work it out. Taking it off site is just sad and hilarious.

But hey, I finally got to use dick move and twitter beef in one sentence. That's one thing ticked off my internet bucket list.

So thanks for that, Stath.

He seems to be an Xbox fanboy, which ironically is a rare thing on neogaf (fanboys) compared to other communities. His strong case was that everyone following MS on twitter knows otherwise. I don't think you're going to find too many people that aren't forgiving of anything MS does following their twitter. Yes its pandering.

But also, I'm only talking about it because it's the topic of the thread for a few pages now. I am surprised so many people care what a gaffer is tweeting, especially when it's stuff like that.
