Phil Spencer Discusses Why FFXIV Isn't on Xbox (Contradictions?)

But couldn't it be the case that getting the game on Xbox NOW is impossible as it's been tied down by a subsequent exclusivity deal is one likely explanation?

Say for instance MS approached SE and asked, yo, wanna bring this to Sexbox? Don't worry about that cross play stuff. Well ignore that.

SE says no can do. Time's gone by and Sony and I got a good thing going. Even came to my daughters wedding and shieee.

You know what I mean? Basically due to an effluxion of time, the dynamic of the partnership has meant that some sort of exclusivity has naturally come about?

... Maybe
Read back a few pages. People have posted links which says that that is not the case.

Maybe I'll win the lottery.

...Maybe.

But hey, I finally got to use dick move and twitter beef in one sentence.

If you think about it...

We all win.

But also, I'm only talking about it because it's the topic of the thread for a few pages now. I am surprised so many people care what a gaffer is tweeting, especially when it's stuff like that.

You must not know of statham's posting and thread history on Gaf.

Just a month ago Yoshida was talking about potentially having it come out on NX. So no, there is no exclusivity deal.

imagine having hollywoord hardman Jason Statham as your avatar and name, but having skin as thick as a broken condom.

Imagine.

Amazing scenes.

They should rethink their position and open up for crossplay. What's the actual harm in people being able to play FFXIV together?

Spencer's a PR guy, they lie all the time and obfuscate the truth. The latter is obviously what's happening here. MS don't play well with other platform's.

I don't see how your post contribute to the topic. It's more of a petty attempt to smear a user here on NeoGAF. If you disagree with that user on Twitter, then go and tell them there.

And this is the specific posts he's linking to:

Maybe cuz his tweet is DIRECTLY related to this thread and he is a member on this forum.

Like one member said : it's a dick move.

He could have just wheeled out a 'protect the Xbox ecosystem to guarantee our users a certain level of quality online' bit of spin. It would have made more sense as a reply.

This is actually the first time I've heard of Microsoft having a strict 'no cross-platform play' policy. Didn't even know it existed until now. Huh.

it is a real policy.. I doubt sony would allow playstation to cross play with Microsoft

the fact there will be crossplay with Xbox and PC is new
and with backwards we can now crossplay the One with the 360

and guys SO what, why are you getting your panties in a bunch over this?
with all the real issues in the world today?? seriously

But wasn't 11 on 360 cross play? Mind you, that was back when Microsoft was really really tight about that sort of stuff, so I'd be surprised if the new Microsoft Anywhere approach had an issue with cross play in a franchise that already had it previously on the platform.

FFXI came to the 360 back when Microsoft were desperate to get Final Fantasy on Xbox and boost their Japanese lineup, so they granted them an exception from their policies. Now they don't care about Final Fantasy or Japan, so they're not granting them an exception.

You really can't make up the OP quotes, it's pretty amazing. Seems like the standard Microsoft response in regards to the shitload of games coming to PS4 but not Xbone is to imply it's all Sony moneyhats and that Microsoft are the good guys and don't do that sort of stuff. Doesn't matter if there are very good non-moneyhat related reasons for that exclusivity, like Microsoft's very own policies blocking a release, just blame Sony for everything.

or because

"It's business," he said, adding he couldn't speak too candidly about the matter. "As I've grow in this role, and I've tried to learn the third-party exclusivity thing - and you see us doing less of it now - [I've found] it's not something I'm a huge fan of."

So Spencer is pretending this is an exclusivity deal, when it's not. It's because he won't allow Xbox servers to communicate with PC and PS4 servers. He then says he doesn't like exclusivity deals, but is perfectly happy to remind us that Tomb Raider is launching "exclusively on Xbox, Holiday 2015"

Okay. Microsoft haven't changed much after all. Still lying out of their asses.

If he's got something to say, he should create a thread and try to work it out. Taking it off site is just sad and hilarious.

But hey, I finally got to use dick move and twitter beef in one sentence. That's one thing ticked off my internet bucket list.

So thanks for that, Stath.

My bad, I thought you were implying people shouldn't be bringing Twitter stuff to GAF to discredit a poster or something.

Microsoft under Nadella are pushing their products on many platforms. You get Xbox games and achievements on iOS. Their other products make their way to iOS and Android. Microsoft everywhere approach, likely because they have to but nonetheless, they do spread themselves about quite happily so people can use their stuff on whatever platform they use which is a win either way.

Do you know what I think Microsoft doesn't like.

Play F2P or MMO on PS4 - Free
Play F2P or MMO on Xbox One - Xbox Live Gold required.

He lied twice in like 3 lines. Fascinating.

I don't know if it constitutes lying. Shuhei Yoshida did the same kind of thing with the Driveclub fiasco and I didn't see such a shit flinging fest with such strong labels being chucked around.

It definitely is a bigger issue though but in both cases I think its most likely based on misinformation. In Spencer's case though, he might just be telling the truth. Who knows what the nature of the industry is like in the background?

Phil/ Xbox defense force come on guys for one second look passed the PR BS. Can you imagine how great it would be for gamers if cross platfrom policies was lifted specifically from MMO's, that way everyone can play on there desired platform of choice. The server population for a popular MMO would always be full and you can play with friends who prefer to play on different platforms with you who may be more comfortable where they are at.

I curious if there is a communication issue at play. With maybe having the game come so much later, the infamous "parity" clause may be a problem? I know it's unlikely but I'm trying to figure out a reason here...

(Sigh) whatever the reason, it's foolishness most likely on MS' part.

You either have Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox who needs to think of a reason for why a game isn't on his console, lying.

Or you have Naoki Yoshida, the director of the game who probably wants his game everywhere possible, lying.

This is not rocket science to figure out who's lying.

I think there is bit overreaction. Basically Spencer didn't even say anything, even though he was speaking. I mean all those quotes are quite vague. And I think bringing Tomb raider to conversation as form to proof Spencer is lying is quite weak move. He does say "and you see us doing less of it now - [I've found] it's not something I'm a huge fan of" which to me sounds like he has changed his view on these deals. Tomb raider deal was made over year ago and lot has happened since. Reasons for his changed attitude are up to debate, whether he genuinely sees them bad or just finds explanatios since Sony gets deals through their market share.

Nothing sweeter than reading the salt of banned GAFers on other websites.

Don't worry, statham ain't banned.

I'm sure we'll see him again outside this thread sometime soon.

Hm... I see now! So we're the ones who are being shaken up and down right? The cook represents the mods? So who is dog?!

sTATHAM IS THE DOG.

But he was approached about bringing it to the Xbox One. Why say no?

Why blame it on third party deals that didn't happen?

So much like there not being a Parity clause...

Never change Septic loooool.
Loool "Everyone following MS knows this isn't true" - Maybe it's time to remove those shades.

So is Spencer essentially spouting nonsense here? Has he offered any further clarification? Misconstruing the reality of these third party exclusive arrangements seems poor form, though I suppose it makes sense off the back of Tomb Raider.

He directly stated that the reason FFXIV is not on Xbox is because of a deal between Sony and Square Enix.

Naoki Yoshida, the person in charge of FFXIV, has stated the reason FFXIV is not on Xbox is because of Microsoft's policies.

If that isn't a lie, then I don't know what is.

What's so wrong with the post statham had issue with? Honestly, out of most posts in this thread, this seems to be one of the more cognitive ones.

The only way to make that post cognitive is if you dismiss Xbox under Phil Spencer and Windows 10. Both products are now a result of user feedback, and the continuation of the preview/insider program - for both products - should give you an idea that this is a long term effort.

Maybe cuz his tweet is DIRECTLY related to this thread and he is a member on this forum.

Like one member said : it's a dick move.

It added nothing to this topic. And people should be quite able to comment on GAF threads on Twitter without indirectly derailing the thread.

Well, if people wanna focus on statham this thread really should be locked.

Not that hard to talk on topic.

Even if MS would've allowed Cross-Play between PS4 and PC, is FF14 a game that would have enough players on that platform to justify it's existence?

Was that an answer for anything? Because it doesn't sound like an answer for anything.

In fact, what the heck are you talking about?

Even if MS would've allowed Cross-Play between PS4 and PC, is FF14 a game that would have enough players on that platform to justify it's existence?

As a port to an MMO?

Yes. 100% yes. Any chance to get more subscriptions is worth taking, especially in an age of MMO's dying a year after release.
