Phil Spencer Discusses Why FFXIV Isn't on Xbox (Contradictions?)

Phil Spencer is just an executive and a PR figure doing his job.
He's pretty good at telling some people what they want to hear but this is certainly not the first time that he's caught spinning, trying to dodge hard questions or straight up lying.
Nothing to blame on him, it's his job.
But you know things like "parity clause for indies doesn't exist but it does", "I chose to focus on first party games except when I'm successful on securing third party deals as with Tomb Raider", "It's all Sony's fault if FFXIV doesn't come to Xbox, not because as a company we don't allow for cross playing with non Microsoft platforms", "I don't care if Sony sells more"....they're all obvious lies and there's nothing to defend.
Still it's his job, he shouldn't be blamed for that, the problem is more with some fans who have idealized him.

Well, that certainly can't be right. Square Enix wants to bring FF XIV to Nintendo's NX as well. I'm sure they want their game on Xbox.

As for Nintendo and Sony not talking shit or not getting called out for it, well, that's not true. Sony's slimy spin on the cock-blocking of EA Access rightfully got called out for what it was by many.

Phil/ Xbox defense force come on guys for one second look passed the PR BS. Can you imagine how great it would be for gamers if cross platfrom policies was lifted specifically from MMO's, that way everyone can play on there desired platform of choice. The server population for a popular MMO would always be full and you can play with friends who prefer to play on different platforms with you who may be more comfortable where they are at.
I would love to play Neverwinter with PS4 owners. There is good player base on Xbox but bigger is better in this case, especially if players start abandoning it when new games come out.

Was that an answer for anything? Because it doesn't sound like an answer for anything.

In fact, what the heck are you talking about?

Here's the post you called cognitive:

Spencer continues to say what people want to hear.

He's a great PR guy. Microsoft picked the right dude for the job, seeing how they don't really intend to listen to gamers in the long run.

I'm sure Disaster Nebraska got great knowledge of Microsoft's user feedback strategy in the long run.

A cross platform game hasn't yet existed possibly for a number of reasons. The data on for Xbox live is encrypted if i recall, MS would be fine with this encryption being used on PC since they provide the tools for that, but I've never seen a server based game have different encryption protocols connecting to the same server for different platforms.

Could a PS4 game even communicate with an xbox game based on this alone? I have my doubts.

So it would need to be:
Xbox/PC
PS4/PC

If he doesn't think so, then yeah.

I mean, who'd want to play a popular MMO after all?

Could a PS4 game even communicate with an xbox game based on this alone? I have my doubts.

I feel like you're making it sound more complicated than it would be.

Do you have a source saying Xbox Live wouldn't be able to communicate with Playstation servers? Heck, even if that was the case, couldn't Microsoft remove those 'encryptions' if they wanted to?

Wow this thread, wow.

So many spiteful, bitter, snidey and condescending posts.

Some people really do hate MS, eh and just revel in all this shit. Just something I've picked up on after not being here too long. Sad really.

I remember reading years ago that Criterion had working online between the two console services while developing Burnout Paradise, not surprisingly they had to disable it in order to meet certification.

(I don't have a link, sadly)

I think I've found the problem. Everyone gets the same treatment.

And I've seen enough bias in your posts on Gaf to know what color your butter is.

But remember, Vivre et laisser mourir! :^)

The IGN article is a bit flimsy.

I wouldn't be surprised if this

It's business," he said, adding he couldn't speak too candidly about the matter

and this

As I've grow in this role, and I've tried to learn the third-party exclusivity thing - and you see us doing less of it now - [I've found] it's not something I'm a huge fan of.

Were different parts of the conversation.

I'd like to hear the conversation or read the transcript.

Its funny that crossplatform is easier between PS4 and PC or Wii U and PC than Xbox One and PC... one would wonder why Microsoft's OS has more difficulties with Microsoft's videogame console...

Their cross platform policy being..."no"?

Poor MS fans, you got fucked. No rocket league! That needs to change.

What's the point? Oh right so you have to convince your friends to buy MS consoles.

I have an Xbox One and dint have a PS4 although I'd love to pick on up for UC4.

If you can point to any post I've made in a Sony, Nintendo or any other platform thread that would show this confirmation bias im all ears.

There's a difference between being a fan of something and just straight up shitting on something.

If he doesn't think so, then yeah.

A lot of the most requested features on Xbox Feedback has either been delivered or announced.
Saying that Microsoft got no intent on listening to gamers in the long run are baseless assumptions.

So I guess we can assume Tomb Raider will be the last 3rd party exclu.... lol couldnt even write that sentence with a straight face. Just good guy Phil being good PR guy Phil I guess.

It comes down to MS not wanting to share and SE saying if you don't wanna share you don't get the game they've made it very clear that's the issue. It's clear talks have been had and no doubt MS wants the game but they probably want Xbox/PC servers of their own. The games development is on a tight and strict path content wise for them to stop and have to do all this would be an expensive waste of time and his I don't like exclusivity bs, Tomb Raider says hi.

Yoshida is right though. A unified community is good for these games and it shouldn't be broken up. I don't see any harm in have 3 platforms on one set of servers.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I just confused you with a different Gaffer.

It's says it right there in the OP: he noted couldn't speak too candidly on the matter. If his words seem contradictory, perhaps it's because he can't qualify or contextualise his answers? He may be the Head of Xbox but he has people to answer to as well, and I would imagine so on cross-platform proposals considering it's Microsoft.

If it's the case, why Spencer doesn't expalin this like you do?

I want to laugh at phil stupidity

because i really feel this situation and the answer given are stupid.
And then i realise how the game itself could be even more healthy with another console userbase in it..and then i realise all those opportunities missed.

And now i'm mad.

Phil Spencer seriously makes me wish Don Mattrick never left. Mattrick told the truth. It wasn't the truth we wanted to HEAR nor was it pleasant but it was the truth regardless.

I forgot who it was, but there was a Gaffer who gave off a similar warning -"Ya'll all miss Mattrick when the next Xbox head tells nothing but lies"- or some such. Well, look where we are.

Never understood why Statham continues to surf GAF when he posts like he loathes this place with every fiber of his being. Dude is sooooo tsundere :^)

Jesus lol him and Tim dog are like the two most delusional fanboys I've seen on twitter. You'd swear they were 15 years old.

Given the comment from Naoki Yoshida right beneath the quote why was exclusivity even a question? ;)

Because I was talking about subsequent exclusivity.

If you actually read the responses to my post that you quoted and my responses therein, you'd have realised that some people made mention of the fact that there were talks about making a port to the NX, which I then acknowledged.

You made a dive straight to this point and ignored the rest? Never change Kayant ;)

Not really. GAF treats all the same. Sony isn't doing any mistakes, but when it does it gets called out. If Sony drops the ball on something, GAF will "attack" Sony hard, especially that most people here has a PS4 over X1. Just see the threads about PS4 connection for that.

It seems that GAF hates MS, but it's because MS is dropping the ball all the time.

Not sure why this has to be lying. It is perfectly valid for him to say that he doesn't like 3rd party exclusivity deals. If one comes along that he thinks is really beneficial to xbox owners, depending on the deal he may swallow his pride and do it such as Tomb Raider. Huge Name, big press, positive push for xbox brand.

FF is much less of a name in this case because its not a true single player main line entry and it requires him to break other self imposed rules at the same time. Smaller audience, more rules to break = not worth it.

In the end I don't see this that far from the "come talk to us and we will see what we can do" platform that Spencer states on indies. People hate it, but I don't think its lying or inconsistent.

The problem is its a dumb rule. Xbox One is actually the only platform right now which needs complicated things to allow crossplay with Windows. You need Windows 10 and you need a game bought on their Microsoft store.

Why does it have to be so complicated when it should be the easiest considering Windows and Xbox are from the same company ?

What changed?

People wishing for Don Mattrick back, this thread is going places. Short memories or something else. Spencer is polarizing which is odd to say the least.

I did see the reply about the NX comment. To be fair I didn't see your earlier/first replies in the thread :p. What I was trying to gather was why would "exclusivity" now come into play when it was never an issue for the game expanding it's platform reach?

I seriously hope that Microsoft change their stance on cross platform play as it will greatly improve online play for everyone, maybe Phil Spencer is down with the idea but those above him are against it.

The only reason this game isn't coming to XB1 is because of MSFT's policies. Not only have Square Enix expressed a desire to port the game to XB1, but also NX, so the narrative that the game is locked away by some exclusivity deal with Sony is a pure fabrication.

There is literally no other way this can be spun.

It's funny, Microsoft/Mojang just released a humorous visual-novel on Mojang's Blog that promotes Cross-Platform play. It's about a Windows device going to high school and socialising with other devices like iOS and Android. Seriously play it!

What the hell is Spencer saying? This goes against what Satya and the new Microsoft is trying to do.

I feel like every damn week Spencer release his bullshit PR. I'm getting tired of it and I really liked him. What he did and is still doing for Xbox is great, but come on...please, stop.
