Nvidia's putting full-fat desktop GTX 980s into notebooks

So let’s get to today’s news from NVIDIA. No longer are they satisfied with the performance levels available in notebooks, and they have worked with OEMs on a new initiative to shoehorn desktop class parts into the notebook lineup.

While this is in fact a full desktop GM204 GTX 980 with 2048 cores, being that it is in a notebook the voltages and frequencies will be reduced a bit, but final clock speeds will depend on the final designs from the notebook manufacturers. What will not be lacking though is the full memory speed, with up to 7 Gbps of bandwidth available from the GDDR5 memory, and 4 and 8 GB versions will be available.

It’s not just enough to fit a desktop part into a notebook though, especially if you are going after the overclocking enthusiast market. NVIDIA has also worked to include fan control into their tool set which should also let owners tweak the fan profile for various scenarios. This will all be accessible in their notebook overclocking tool.

Since NVIDIA doesn’t directly sell notebooks, we will have to wait for OEMs to announce pricing and shipping dates, but NVIDIA had six notebook designs to go along with the announcement from Aorus, Clevo, ASUS, and MSI. MSI should be first out of the gate with a new model of both the GT72 and the GT80 which will offer GTX 980 in SLI. ASUS is going to be using the GTX 980 in their new liquid cooled GX700VO that was announced at IFA. Aorus will offer the X7 G-SYNC, and Clevo will have both the P870DM and P775DM.

How does that even work? It's going to have to be underclocked to the moon and back in order to fit in a typical notebook power and heat profile unless we're returning to the days of 3" thick laptops.

This will be good for gaming laptops.

looks like their using custom chip layouts and from the quotes voltages and frequencies will be reduced a bit.

I'm guessing any notebook that has one of these will be less of a laptop and more of a portable desktop. It'll make sense for a certain class of consumers, though.

Aren't these 970's that they call 980's or are they the exact same ones on desktop?

No this is an actual GTX 980 that you would put in a desktop.

45 minutes of battery life confirmed?

Obviously they got a battery from the future.

EDIT

Honestly it's something like this that I want. Would cost a truck load probably.

You mixed up HC and Linus' videos, fyi.

Anyway, this looks cool, but battery will last 30 minutes or less, and it's going to be expensive as fuck

They are releasing an 8 GB GTX 980 but for laptops only?

I'm sure it falls back to Integrated Graphics on battery or at least it should. You won't be gaming on battery, that's for sure. It can't deliver the power needed.

These type of laptops need to be connected to a power supply for the GPU to even operate, otherwise it switches to intel graphics.

Battery life can last at most 2 hours. High Performance GPUs don't operate on battery power.

EDIT: What Felix said. ^^

Pretty cool. This kind of option is long overdue.

If I want a slim, light laptop, the Surface Pro is the way to go.

If I want a powerful and transportable computer, battery life be damned, I'll get something like this.

How much do you want your next console to cost? These GPUs are not cheap.

I bought a $399 Xbox 360 in 2005 and a $599 PS3 in 2007, it was nice having consoles that could compete with decently spec'ed PC at launch - instead of inhibit the games coming out for it...

For fucks sake can't they put these amazing specs in a nice looking laptop? Is that too much to ask? Who the hell likes the appearance of these gaming laptops apart from my 12 year old brother and his friends?

In theory this is really cool, but yeah, my concern is that these laptops will run insanely hot and have pathetic battery life. Considering how much I imagine a laptop with a 980 would cost, I wouldn't seriously consider it unless those two concerns were addressed.

1) There will probably be more laptops coming with them in it.
2) We aren't seeing all the angles of all of these.

I guess if you are talking about the first 3 pictures I guess that's a valid complaint.

The clevo ones look fine.

The only one that looks downright obnoxious to me is the ASUS with that ridiculous looking cooling dock. The MSis are a little garish but the Aorus and the Clevo look like normal laptops.

Gaming laptops are just made to be portable desktops to make it easier than lugging a PC, monitor, and keyboard etc to an event. I don't think they were ever intended to be used like you would a laptop for work.

I wish some company would release a gaming laptop that looked something like google chromebook pixel. Sure it would most likely be more bulkier but anything looks better compared to these hideous plastic composts.

Clevo P775 one looks pretty nice. i would get that one if i wanted one.

Probably using the best chips like what AMD is doing with the R9 nano.

Well one good reason for all the plastic is that anybody interested in spending 3 grand on a gaming laptop would want it to be upgradable to a degree. The Razer Blades are nice for people who want a bit of both worlds.

that boggles my mind too man.
i mean kids don't have 3000 bucks to spend on a laptop.

what the hell is their marketing/ design team thinking>?

Not saying I would ever use a gaming laptop as a work laptop, but I would want to, say, be able to play a game on a plane or something without it frying my lap.

When I am playing video games, I definitely make sure my monitor and case are done in full make up and wearing high heels. They gotta look pretty.

The point being is that they tried hard to make the computers as ugly as possible. Possibly spent money that would be better spent elsewhere.

'cos that is what gamerz like.

Yeah man.

That doesn't stop it looking ridiculous :D

It's almost as if the look doesn't matter to some people. That isn't to say I don't think some of them look stupid as hell but, there is a LOT of normal looking ones out there.

Gonna need some asbestos to stop my knees from burning.

They aren't made to be in your lap in the first place. These specific ones anyway.
