2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Country where it will be purchased: United States
Maximum budget: $1200
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): 15.6 is the largest, but down to a 12" is fine
Planned usage: Light gaming, more of a daily use machine and streaming and integration into a HT set up

Other things I'm looking for: A must is an IPS (or similar) display...TN displays just make me sad. Display at least 1080p or more. I also need an RJ-45 input, this is something I cannot do without.

One other note is I don't mind upgrading a machine. So having to upgrade from a 5400 rpm drive to a SSD, or a RAM upgrade is not big deal to me. In fact I would like to have a machine where I could perform these upgrades down the road.

Might want to give the Lenovo Y50 a look.
I'm now choosing between 2 laptops and I would like some advice. This one http://www.medion.com/gb/shop/budge...=udg&utm_medium=textlink&utm_campaign=generic or this one http://m.ebuyer.com/704142. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First link, and it's not even close.

1080p IPS vs 768p TN
8GB vs 4GB
1TB SSHD vs 500GB HDD

Edit:

I found a deal for a new Gigabyte P37xV4 with a 17.3 inch IPS display, i7 5700HQ (Broadwell), GTX 980M 8GB, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD (7200RPM), Blu-Ray Writer, and 16 GB DDRL3 RAM, for $1700. Comes with Windows 8.1 too.

It'll be here on Thursday :)

Share the link to the hookup you bastard :p

Insane.

Objectively the best laptop I've ever owned, the GT72 is a great experience. It'll be hard to go back to lower quality machines.

K.Jack, what are your thoughts on the Acer Aspire V15/V17 series? I'm in the market for a new laptop to do heavy Photoshop illustration work on and a fair amount of gaming (though nothing insanely GPU intensive). My budget is around $1200 (give or a take a hundred) and am currently looking at both the 15.6" V15 and the 17.3" V17 as potential options.

A possible alternative to either of those is this MSI G Series GE62, which has similar specs to the V15. I've never used an Acer or an MSI machine before (coming from an ASUS ROG laptop and looking for something different).

Hello LaptopGaf! I am currently looking for a new, more powerful laptop, but I don't have the knowledge to feel like I'm making the right choice. Help me!

Country: United States
Budget: $1000-1200
Max Size: Prefereable around 15", could be a bit larger if need be
Planned Usage: My main priority is gaming, being able to play League of Legends at max settings, but also current gen/future games such as Street Fighter V and Star Wars Battlefront that will be more demanding. I also will use this computer for school so decent functionality in that area is ideal as well.

Just bought an ASUS ROG laptop with an Nvidia 4GB 980M inside. Time for some 1080p 60fps Witcher 3. I'm interested in seeing how much better it looks than my Xbox1 version.

Could anybody help me out because I'm getting incredibly frustrated with pc gaming, since I've had this laptop I had nothing but dissapointment really.. Let me start with the start, I'll put my specs here so someone could actually see if I overestimated this laptop or if there's something else going on.
The specs are as following: It's an msi laptop with a nvidia GTX970M, an I7-4720HQ @ 2.60ghz and 16 gigs of ram.

Now this laptop cost me quite much it was €1849 and I expected to play newer games atleast at 60 fps on medium to high, I mean that isn't too much to ask from something that is so costly right? Most ps4 games play at medium to high at 30 fps but it also costs more than 4 times less than this laptop.

Now anyways to get to the point, only 1 game I've bought for pc has been working like I was hoping it would and that was Mad Max. The rest of the games including: Rome 2: Total War, Heroes of the storm, world of warcraft and now the worst of them all; The Witcher 3 has not been running like I hoped it would run.

I've bought TW3 yesterday and it is not running like I would have hoped it would run, it's not even running at 60 fps on medium. It's always around 40-45 with some drops to the lower 30s.
I've played the game for like 20 minutes and quit out of frustration that I have wasted so much money on this laptop.
Could anybody please tell me that this is normal and that the laptop is just too weak to play the newest games or is there something wrong? I really could use something here, thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's normal. I don't know how much money that is to USD, but seems like a lot. With that kind of money you could have had a PC (desktop) that can play games significantly better than the laptop. Witcher 3 is a very demanding game. I don't see a laptop being able to run it well.

Edit: just converted the money.

I spent around that much on my PC and I can run just about any game at max settings and 60 fps.

Well fuck :(
Thanks anyways for the answer, atleast I know I don't have to look any further now.

Country where it will be purchased. United States of America
Maximum budget. $3,500
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). N/A
Planned usage I'd prefer full-on modern gaming (AAA games at high settings), though I don't have any grand designs on 4k gaming or VR, at the moment.

I'm studying game design, so I need something that can handle running modern games that may be (will be) lacking optimization. Windows/NVidia might as well be a requirement, given a lot of the projects won't be beyond that point yet in terms of compatibility.

That said, I'm on the technical end, not the artistic; aside from being able to run work-in-progress games for testing purposes, I only really need to run Visual Studio, APIs, and compile, none of which is exactly demanding. Modeling and high-end rendering isn't really on the table.

Not overly fussed for size or battery life. As you'd probably expect for my program, outlet availability in classes and workspace isn't an issue. Looking more at the desktop replacement end of things rather than high portability/small form factor. Likewise, I expect to normally have a USB mouse plugged in, so if the built-in trackpad isn't great it's not a huge issue.

Bonus points for ruggedness. I don't need a military-hardened case, but I'll take on a couple of extra kilos for the sake of durability.

970m having trouble with HotS and WoW? That doesn't make sense. Maybe the laptop is falling back to integrated graphics for those games.
Update your graphics drivers, then right click the desktop > Nvidia Control Panel, then dig around for the page that lets you set those games to always use the GPU (without enabling the GPU globally, that's a waste of energy). On mobile else I'd have better instructions.

For everything else, keep tweaking settings. According to YouTube, the 970M can do Witcher 3 at 50FPS medium or 30FPS ultra no AA.

Hello, GAF! I am in need of a new laptop and I am hoping someone can help point the way.
Country: USA
Max Budget: $375-475
Size: Must be able to fit in a briefcase/bag.
Usage: I am looking for something that can play modern games with decent settings. I don't need 60FPS on ultra settings or anything like that but something that can run games good.
One key point is that it must have an HDMI-in port to play consoles on.

I would really appreciate if anyone could help. I have a Steam code for The Stanley Parable that I can give to whoever finds the best option (if anyone helps at all). Thanks!

This kind of laptops have display connected directly to dGPU, so no way to use integrated intel GPU. Which is great, saves a lot of hassle with crappy Optimus.

FYI, while ASUS is dGPU only, the MSI GT72 actually has a dedicated button for switching between the dGPU and iGPU. You just have to reboot between switches.

I'm probably wrong but won't these laptops overheat with something like that, my laptop with a 860m can get pretty hot sometimes.

My GT72 on max fans keeps the GTX 980M around 72C, so there's plenty of thermal room for a beefier GPU.

Anyone bought MXM cards before? How easy is it to upgrade?

Entirely dependent on the laptop in question.

15" vs 15" and 17" vs 17", I'd take the GE62 or GE72 every time, especially if the GTX 965M SKUs are on the table.. The 965M stomps a mud hole in the 860M/960M.

Versus paying $1,399 for that V17, I'd pay $1,199 for a GTX 965M MSI, then spend the difference on an mSATA SSD.

1. The first bolded is impossible with your budget.

2. The second? HDMI-In is quite literally nonexistent in the laptop market. No one offers it on any machine.

I'm not looking for a "gaming laptop" per say, but more of a "laptop that can play games." My Toshiba Satellite C655-S5301 was purchased in 2012 for $350 and it runs most of my games fine. Are you saying that Moore's Law has not been in effect the last three years?

Honestly, the HDMI-in was wishful thinking but I would be happy to throw in a few bucks more if one could be found at a higher price. I know there are some out there.

So you've been playing on integrated Intel Graphics 3000 for 3 years. By that standard nearly all laptops can play games. What games have you been playing, and what are you thinking of playing in the future?

I have a friend who has an alienware laptop with an HDMI input. But honestly you'd be better off getting a portable monitor for your consoles.

Yeah that one Alienware 17/18 gen had HDMI-IN, but they were the first, only, and last.

By "modern games" what exactly do you mean?

Hi please help.

My current laptop gets so hot on the left side it can overcook a steak and now the speakers are going. Need a new one.

Country where it will be purchased: Canada!
Maximum budget: Around 1000 Canadian I guess?
Max size 15-17 inch screen.
Planned usage: To play games smoothly. I am playing a lot Af guild Wars 2. Also like emulation and Steam and Nvidia streaming, so 1080p would be nice.
Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc: Low fan noise would be good. Also, I would only really use this as a quasi desktop replacement so it does not need to be paper thin. No lugging around a campus or whatever, the most it would move is from bedroom to kitchen.

Thanks please help

I have a similar laptop and run witcher 3 with a mixture of high to ultra settings with all the game works stuff and get 40fps. Something sounds wrong with your laptop.

My game list can be found here (note that I played Alan Wake and Saints Row 4 on a different computer). I would like to be able to play Dark Souls, Resident Evil 4, and several of my unplayed games in the link above. I would just be happy to get these running.

I'll look into a portable monitor for console gaming.

Any tweaks you guys have in the back of your head which might change something in the nvidia menu or something?

Well I think I'm in the market for a new laptop due to some issues with my current one.

  • Country where it will be purchased. USA
  • Maximum budget. $1200, give or take. Would like to be closer to $1000.
  • Max size. 15.6", would also consider 14" but probably not as many options at that size; don't need ultrathin/light
  • Planned usage: productivity, web, video streaming, gaming, etc. I'm a moderate gamer but don't need to play the latest/greatest at the highest settings.
  • Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc. - decent battery life, good thermal management, just need something like an upper mid-range gaming laptop that can last a few years, 1080p is fine, don't need 4K
I've done some research and have read the past couple months of this thread. Looks like my primary options boil down to laptops with an nVidia 960M (haven't even seen anything with AMD in this range).

Acer V15 Nitro
MSI GE62 Apache (960M); 965M version out of stock at Amazon and Newegg
Lenovo Y50
Asus GL551JW

There may be other options like Sager/Clevo, Gigabyte, Dell, etc. I'm not aware of. I think Sager has cleared out some of their product numbers to make way for new Skylake models (links to Xotic from recent pages go to 'product not found' pages). I don't know how long I can wait, or if waiting would be worth it for Skylake updates on the above options.

My gut and research suggest the MSI GE62 Apache is probably the best all around fit - I don't know how that and the Acer V15, Lenovo Y50, and Asus GL551JW compare to each other in terms of other things like durability, or what kinds of specific issues/advantages each laptop has relative to the others. I know about Y50 screen issues (only order 5944... models). I lean toward having a DVD drive, for whatever reason - I could swap it out for a storage caddy in the future if desired.

Any other decent/similar laptops? I see that K Jack highly recommends the 965M but other than that out of stock MSI GE62, I haven't seen other models w/ 965M in this range.

Thanks a lot for the help and consideration.

My new laptop won't get here until tomorrow. To be fair I ordered it like 40 minutes before the "Thursday guaranteed delivery" expired, but still...!

Yeah, I'd go with a GE62 w/ 965M (still available here) at this point, or wait for the 965M equipped Clevo/Sager machines to come back on the market.

The difference between 960M and 965M is vast enough for me to firmly lean towards taking the latter, at all costs.

does anyone know when the skylake cpus are going to become mainstream in laptops? I've been waiting for skylake for about a year now and it would be stupid to stop waiting now so yeah haha

Thanks for the reply and the link - I may have overlooked that on Xotic's site earlier.

I hope the new Sagers come out soon - has a release date been set? If those are comparable in price I may consider waiting for them if it's not more than a couple weeks.

No ideas anyone? Also I dunno about this skyfall thing. Should I wait?

A few high-end Skylake machines are up on Sager's site. I'm hearing 3rd or 4th week of October for a lot of them, and prices are hihger than the previous gen.

So sorry yo, I missed your post somehow.

Canadian prices are so shit, man, I'm sorry in advance. Can you stretch for this? Because truthfully, the next step down isn't much cheaper. Taking even another step down, we end us here.

Hello, it is this laptop: http://www.laptopshop.be/product/579341/msi-gs60-2qe-231be-ghost-azerty.html
It is in dutch though but you can see the specs and such.

Go here and scroll down to the specific gaming benchmarks. Your numbers shouldn't be lower than theirs.

Here is the laptop I was able to get. It's listed at $2200, but thanks to an employee purchase program I have at work, I was able to get it for $1700:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZUYMQYY/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I'm not particularly a Gigatype fan, but that's a good deal on it. Congrats.

Please give us a review, it'd help to have first hand impressions.

Damn, that's too far out for me. :/
I figure the newer models will be more expensive, but getting Broadwell models cheaper would probably be better. Not sure if missing out on G-Sync is anything to worry/care about. Maybe MSI's Skylake units will come out soon as well - could also be worth waiting or, even better, drive down price of their current Broadwell laptops.

Thanks for all your help, K.Jack.

Thank you! I was looking at that first link myself. I think I can stretch it, I like what I see.
And yeah.. the Canadian dollar really messed with prices here. Nothing to be sorry for, just gotta do the best with what we have.

Quick question please. I know a lot about laptop management in terms of software/hardware EXCEPT battery health. What's the best way to preserve batteries in laptops these days?

This really is gonna be a somewhat desktop replacement I can have beside my bed. Is it being plugged in most of the time gonna be a problem? Really want it to be always ready to go while also being ready to take to another room at a moments notice. Please give me battery tips.

Thing is, the Broadwell laptops won't get any cheaper, they'll just vanish when the Skylakes come out.

This really is gonna be a somewhat desktop replacement I can have beside my bed. Is it being plugged in most of the time gonna be a problem? Really want it to be always ready to go while also being ready to take to another room at a moments notice. Please give me battery tips.

Honestly, there's really nothing practical you can do, to save a laptops battery from diminishing. It happens so slow these days anyway,

Thing is, the Broadwell laptops won't get any cheaper, they'll just vanish when the Skylakes come out.

Good to know, thanks! Will just use it as it goes and hope for the best. Is using a battery meter or whatever recommended?

Oh also, for the one I got it has the 1tb hardrive with 8gig ssd cache thing. How does that work? Are they separate partitions or will things just use the cache when they want?

You have no control over the cache. It will mainly affect the speed of your boot times and how fast programs launch.

Hey Gaf. Looking for a laptop for a friend. Her budget is $300 and she will be using it for basic stuff. Maybe some video editing and using Photoshop is the most taxing programs she'll use. Otherwise basic stuff like web browsing, YouTube, and watching movies/Netflix. Thanks.

New Sager Skylake models are revealed as well.

No 965M versions, though. :/

edit - up at Xotic, too.

So I guess you either up your budget to ~$1400, or snag that GE62 before it disappears from Xotic.

There is no Skylake GE62 with a 965M either. It's 960M or 970M.

Slim pickings.

Yea, too bad about no Skylake w/ 965M (yet). Maybe in a few months, or the equivalent refresh when Pascal launches. It's hard to justify going higher in cost since I had been saving up to build a desktop before my laptop;s recent issues.

I'm also considering the Sager NP7155 w/960M (now rebranded as the NP7255 for Skylake - Sager, Xotic). It seems like a budget version of the NP8651/NP8657. Not many reviews other than this one of the Clevo equivalent. Some concerns in there about CPU throttling and temps, but it seems a decent <$1000 option.

Thanks again for all the advice and info.

Any of those will do?

Nah go with this one.

Well, yeah, if you're going to build a desktop, I wouldn't get anything stronger than a GTX 960M or 860M. It's literally a GTX 750 Ti, so that + an i7 Quad will be enough for your laptop.

So is a 2GB 960m the best available card with a hard cap of $1000 USD? For the next few months at least?

Yep.

For sure, but now that I have to replace my laptop the desktop plans get pushed back (was going to keep current laptop as portable/backup, build primary desktop; now have to replace my primary laptop w/ another laptop). The timing sucks. :/

Anyway, appreciate all your advice.

Btw, the 965M is the mobile version of the GTX 950/960, just for comparison's sake. Same core count and everything.
